Kelly; This is my line all right, Wareham Mack was the son of my ggg-grandfather Richard Mack from Ct. and the fifer Drummer in the Revolutionary war. Also an ascendent to Lucy Mack Smith, the mother of Joseph Smith, the Mormon Prophet. Richard's grandaughter was my great grandmother Mary Mack, who was born in Shelbyville Ind. 12-2-1830. She married my great-grandfather William Pyle on 12-24-1846 in Eugene, Vermillion, County In. I am looking for her father, one of the sons of Richard Mack, who was in Shelbyville around 1830. She also had a sister Margaret Mack who married George Hannaman around the middle of the 1850's. Thanks for your response and hope I can help you in some way. Doni; My documentation ends or starts with William Piles/Pyle born in Pa. around the year 1775-76 and the branches are very clear from there on down. I suspect we descended from the Maryland Piles, but family history tells us that our William moved as a child with his parents to VA. and married Mary Jones or Janes in the late 1780's or 90's. Their second born son was my gg-grandfather Robert Pyle, born 2-18-1800. He married Martha Malone born 8-14-1802. They were married in Chilicothe, OH, 11-14-1822. I have no history on Martha except that Robert and Martha settled in Eugene, Vermillion County Indiana around the year 1824 and inherited property owned by William or Billy Malone, creating a supposition that Martha was Billy's Daughter. Robert and Martha Pyle died in the year 1867 in Williamson Co., TX. Robert and Martha's first born son William was born the 9th of March in Ross County OH. and came to Vermillion County with his parents and married Mary Mack on Christmas Eve 1846. William's brother Samuel, also born in Ross County on 4-11-1826 was the grandfather of Ernie Pyle, war correspondent. William and Samuel came to Ca. inn the early 1850's, but Samuel returned and purchased property in Helts Township, Vermillion County. Being the Pyles were movers and shakers, I just can't put my finger on where they began, I'm sure they descended from John in England, but from which branch is unclear at the present. I'm checking into the Zachariah Piles history in Va. right now and my guesswork lies heavy in that direction. My g-grandmother Mary Mack Pyle stated that Robert Pyle was born in PA., so who knows? Hi all. Had a great time in Vegas, but thought of you guys often. Just spent an hour reviewing the posts I missed. You guys were busy in spite of downtime from rootsweb! Will be working on some more of the famous "Grandpa's notes" and posting ASAP. Cousin Dan Page: We're working on the same line. I know who Belton was, and my ggg-grandfather was William Rowan Pyle from Floyd County, GA. I will send you some notes that I posted earlier from my grandfather's notes that indicate paternity for William Rowan. Doris Pyle Haynes and I have been working through some of this, too. Also Sara: You have me listed as Rita Pyle Wallace. True enough, but I just got married in February of 97. I'm Rita Pyle Wallace Davis, native of Arkansas, Columbia County, and recently relocated to Atlanta, Georgia with my new husband. Okay--we'll send out stuff ASAP. Missed ya'll. Marc, I have been reading these notes to Ralph with great interest. I am working on a line in NC also, but not a PYLE line. As always, you need documentation. You may obtain complete marriage listings that show bondsmen, date, etc. from the state archives/state library. I recently received three or four pages of listings complete with filing numbers, from NC. If you can't make it to Raleigh to do your own lookups at the archives, their address is 109 East Jones. St.,Raleigh,NC. 27601-2807. They charge $8.00 initial fee for a search and your check should be made payable to North Carolina Dept. of Cultural Resources. There is also a book available in libraries that lists wills on file in NC, but I will have to locate my notes on that one, I think it is called Will and Testator Index for NC. I just ordered a will that was listed in that book from the NC archives, sent my $8.00, received it in about two weeks. Not bad. At least I was able to sort out some of the people that had been entries on the census listings. Now I know who their father was. Because I live in Texas but must do a lot of research in Wake Co.,NC, I joined a genealogical society there. You might consider doing that if you have a lot of research to do in a particular area. It gets you on their mailing list, most societies put out a quarterly that may be good for clues. Also, they generally offer local assistance in research. Sara pyle@airmail.net
Ralph, This Elizabeth Simpson was married to James PILES who died in Orange Co., NC in 1819. After I returned from the genealogy library today this thought struck me. Marriage bonds were required in Orange County, NC and can be researched for the period 1779 through 1868. If we were to look at these for all SIMPSON surnames and inspect those that are married to Elizabeth we probably could come up with the correct man. What do you think? I have put this on my ToDo list for the next time I can do this research. Here is the list that I did get today for PILES/PYLES married in NC as reported in the book: Marriages of ORANGE COUNTY NORTH CAROLINA 1779-1868 compiled by Brent H. Holcomb published by Genealogical Publishing Co., Inc., 1983. I will list the bondsman only if it is a similar name. Let me know if you need the complete list. Hi All! We want to welcome our newest member, Eve Cassady, to the PYLE Family list! We are so glad to have you join us. When you have time, please tell us a little about yourself and what branch of the PYLE family you are researching. This list is only a little over a month old, we are just getting started and already have about 70 members. We do have a few guidelines regarding postings, etc. All genealogical postings should be addressed to PYLE-L@rootsweb.com This also includes responses to queries. For example, if you are responding to a query that I make, then you should address it to my e-mail with Cc to the list address or vice-versa. It is easiest to just click on "reply to all". If you have a message for someone of a personal nature, then you would certainly want to send that privately. If you are posting a very long document or gedcom, then it should be done in 2 or 3 postings rather than the whole thing at once. For instance, you might be sending xxx pt. 1, xxx pt. 2, xxx pt 3, etc. The reason for this is very simply that some providers cannot handle large pieces of mail at one time. Please do not send attachments to the list because there has been a problem with that on some servers. If you have a document that is too large to do a cut and paste, then post a description of it to the list to see who might want it sent directly. Or, I possibly could arrange to have it stored on a server for retrieval, just let me know. If you have any questions about the list or you are not sure of what to do, please e-mail me at pyle@airmail.net Looking forward to hearing from you. Sara Broughton Pyle pyle@airmail.net

Dan, Glad to see you on the Internet! Did any of the last 'batch' of info that I sent help? Rita is supposed to be back from vacation this week-end and she seems to know a lot about your family. >Welcome to the PYLE Family list! We are so glad to have you join >us! When you have time, please tell us a little about yourself and what >branch of the PYLE family you are researching. Sara - My stepfather was Belton Pyle. He md my mother when I was just a tad and is the only father I've known. I've been helping a bit to research his ancestry. Basically it goes like this: William Rowan PYLE b 1821 Floyd Co. GA d 1899 Columbia Co. AR md (1) 1844 Floyd Co. GA Permelia Ann WARD b 1828 GA d 1875 Columbia Co. AR Francis Marion PYLE b 1865 Columbia Co. AR d 1933 Columbia Co. AR md 1905 Minnie Lee LAWRENCE b 1883 Union Co. AR d 1958 Columbia Co. AR Belton Brown PYLE b 1910 Columbia Co. AR d 1994 Sebastian Co. AR md (1) Irene Ada SMYTHE b 1905 Morris Co. KS d 1977 Sebastian Co. AR I've not yet discovered any proof for the parents of William Rowan PYLE, although various researchers have surmised different people for his father, apparently based on just dates and ages that seem to "fit." Likewise for his spouse Permelia Ann WARD. I have managed to obtain copies of these books: 1. The Pyle-Pile Family in America, 1642-1980, Howard T. Pyle, 1981 2. A Mendenhall-Newlin Alliance, Russell N. Abel, 1989 3. Colonel John Pyle and His People, C. Homer Pyle, 1970 From these, it is clear that it is possible that William Rowan Pyle was maybe a descendent of Coln. John Pyle, and thus earlier Pyles of PA. However, at this point that is pure speculation, lacking any proof whatever that I am aware of. We engaged the services of Dorothy Holland Herring, a GA genealogist, many years ago, and she collected considerable material but was unable to discover William Rowan PYLE's parents. So that's about where we stand - still looking for information - and maybe the PYLE-L list will help with that. Maybe I can help others, particularly if they have connections to William Rowan PYLE. In it, I frind a James Pyles, born 1824 died 1902. Enoch's burial, in 1881, is not recorded. The wife of James is there as well as other family members." In my FGS for james Wiley PYLES I have the following: "LDS film #1301620, cemetery records of Bartholomew Co., IN indicates: James Pyles 1824-1902 - burried at Carter's Chapel Cemetery with a lot of other PYLES. those shown are Elmer Pyles 1888-1924 Katie Pyles 1867-1893 Mary A. Pyles - no dates Nancy Pyles 1831-1913 Willis Pyles d. 1879 age 6 Ralph, this is the information I have under the FGS of James PYLES Jr. dob estimated based upon 1860 census is 1806 dob estimated based upon his 1863 Civil War discharge is 1819 dob estimated based upon his 1865 Civil War discharge is 1832 From Hester's pension application they were married in Orange Co NC about 1834 First child,Elizabeth, born in 1842 based upon 1860 census BUT 8 YEARS AFTER THEY MARRIED? 2nd child Julia and third child Alfred born in 1844 per 1860 census As you can see it does not appear that the person buried in Carter's Chapel who was born in 1824 is James Pyles Jr. Do you have my FGS #59 ? I have as his children the following: Francis M. b. 17 Jun 1846 m. Mary Brimfield 20 Jan 1870 Rebecca b. abt 1848 m. John F. Martin 11 Nov 1865 Joseph A. b. 14 Jun 1855 m. Mary L. Morris 25 Mar 1877 Mary E. b. abt 1854 Martha E. b. abt 1853 m. Henry Barnhart 8 May 1873 My record is fuzzy, but I have this James wife as Nancy (?). Also have other spouses for Francis M. Nancy E. Hays 10 apr 1898 and Rebecca - Isaac Kemp undated. What light can you shed on this situation? Who is the father of this James Pyles? Is it just a coincidence that Wiley's wife is Nancy Hopkins and the wife of this James is Nancy? Please let me know if you have any clearer picture of these people. Thanks! Marc
