    1. Interesting Ancient History
    2. Doris Pyle Haynes
    3. This was taken from the book by Lela Livingston, " The Pyle Family,1594-1954" (a foreword by Homer Pyle) Pyle is a surname found in the southern counties of England. The name 'Pyle' and also 'Pile' is found in Devonshire, in Exeter and its neighborhood. Archeologists agree that the oldest thing erected by man is Wilts County, England, is Stonehenge. It is the most famous Megalithic monument in England. Stonehenge was a sort of immense calender frequented by sun-worshipers from the Mediterranean --backward Egyptian-type men. It is claimed that a pack of Mediterranean sun-worshipers ended up in Wiltshire, England. It is also claimed, and with reasonable proof, that the Channel used to be part of the European Continent, and the Thames was a tributary of the Rhine. About A.D. 500 Wiltshire was invaded by the Saxons, and at Winchester the Britons were crushed by the savage hordes. The Britons fled across the Salisbury Plain to the fortress at Old Sarum which was their last stand in south England. The conquering Saxons held Old Sarum until 1066, when William with his Normans occupied the old city until 1220 A.D. But why all this historical background? someone may ask. It is to prove that the Pyle family could easily have been brought to England from Continental Europe by an invading army, and that is just what we think happened! Pyle family tradition says that members of the Pyle family took part in the battle of Thermopylae as allies of Leonidas and his three hundred Spartans. The battle raged for three days and every attempt by Xeroxes to overcome the Spartans and their allies was repulsed, but on the third night the Spartans were betrayed by "The Judas of Greece" Then Leonidas, knowing that he could no longer hold his postiion, sent his allies home, and he with his three hundred Spartans remained to die in the Pass. We are told that a number of the soldiers of the allies of Leonidas were so proud of having fought in the battle of Thermopylae that they changed their names to Pylae which name composed the last five letters of the word Thermopylae. This battle was in the year 480 B.C. In the autumn of 55 B.C. Julius Caesar invaded Britian and it is claimed that some of the members of his legions were descendants of those who had changed their names to Pylae in honor of the battle of Thermopylae and that a number of them remained in England and dropped the letter "a" from their names, leaving it Pyle.

    2. Doris Pyle Haynes
    3. Rita, Here are two sources of Grandpa's notes: Pile/Pyle of America by Howard T. Pyle - pages 2 and 7: (in part) Isaac Pyle, b.ca 1721 in Marlborough, Chester Co. PA. died 11-8-1794 He married Elizabeth Darlington on 9-21-1750 at Birmingham Meeting. The info about Nicholas Pyle (1748-1829) who moved to Christian Co., Ky on pack horses seemed almost verbatim from "The Pyle Family History, 1594-1954" by Lela Livingston. This book is on microfilm # MC 2 294 and was filmed Feb 1966 by ? Genealogy Society. Howard Pyle used this book as a source also. Grandpa must have taken notes as I do, bits and pieces here and there (and sometimes forget to write down where/when I got them) I've about given up on those illusive Pyles that I've been chasing; I'm now going back to square one and starting over! Anyone out there have any clues in S.C. and GA on a Samuel and John Pyle both born ca 1770-74? John married Mary Maxwell and Samuel married Charity Eason and both families were in Oglethorpe Co., Ga by 1800. I've not seen anything from this group on the Samuel Piles they called the Indian Trader in south GA and Fla. Anyone have a clue? Doris

    1. New Pyle cousin reporting in.
    2. Doni Wright
    3. A one of the newest members of the Pyle list -- let me take this short opportunity to introduce myself. Hi, I'm Doni Wright of Stafford, VA, and have been doing genealogy since I was 8 yrs old, but not on a regular basis as I have been doing since 1980. It was fascinating to find the connection to Pyles through the Heacock line. How wonderful the Quakers kept records. I used them to build family trees doing cluster genealogies on many lines. But 5 Jonathan Heacock m. Hannah Pyle, dau. of Jacob Pyle and Jane Sharples. 4 Jacob was the son of John Pyle & Susanna Chamberlain. (Susanna's sister, Mary, married Jacob's bro., Daniel) (just an added tidbit) 3 John was the son of Robert Pyle & Ann Stovey. 2 Robert was the son of Nicholas Pyle & Edith Maspratt/Muspratt 1 Nicholas was the son of John Pyle & Mary M. Withers ...this is as far as I go. I got the last 2 generations from the ancestral file. I am compiling what I have on the internet. The Pyle line is not yet up, but you can visit my home page, and see how it will be posted. Have a great day everyone. <www.interserf.net/doniw> doni

    1. Subj.Line and other matters
    2. Dear Pyle Cousins, In reviewing over 200 messages that have appeared on this list, most of them have utilized a specific subject line. The ones that didn't were new members doing their first posting and some where a location is unknown. I think the postings have been wonderful and I believe we have a couple of success stories already, i.e. Bobi finding Daniel Boone PYLE's line and Dan linking up with Rita's line. We need to post our queries at least once a month because we add new members all the time. If you find something you feel would be of interest to the group, please post it. Hopefully, you are doing research in your local libraries; visiting/writing to courthouses for records; and cemeteries. The net is a wonderful place for making contacts and getting leads but cannot take the place of old fashioned research and documentation! Lastly, I think that we need to realize that this list is only a month old, some folks have never been on a maillist before and are just learning about "netiquette". We need to remember we are probably all related in some way and all working toward the same goal. This is why I refer to us as "cousins". Let's continue a lighthearted spirit of cooperation between us as we seek our heritage. Sara pyle@airmail.net

    3. Hi everybody.....Old Daniel "Boone" finally has a parent and a homeland! Alfred Pyles b ? in County Cork Ireland had four children five sons...the Pyles, of Cork, Munster, Ireland. Old Alfred Pyles issue: Daniel "Boone", James, Enoch, Harrison and William.... Alfred sent his sons to seek refuge in the new "land of promise" in America far from the English crown which had taken control of Ireland. 3. Hi Piles folks, It will help us all if, when you post messages, you compose the subject line precisely. Putting "Piles family" in the subject line is too general. I am having a time trying to find any info to prove Benjamins Father and Mother. My information states that Benjamin was born in KY. Could they have just been passing thru on their way somewhere else?? Ben had one son in IL on the way thru to MO. Where did Robert and William and Isaac originate from?? Anyone else searching this particular line I would love to correspond with. I have lots of info to share about Benjamin and his descendants. I would like to find more info about Bens siblings also. Have you noticed the Pyle family is entirely to fond of the name James. That will make future genealogists pull their hair out. The rest of the family used James alot also.
