    3. HI, COUSINS! Just wanted to let you know that Sara is working this week and is not able to check lookups or post to the list as she usually likes to do. She is an election judge, in an area that has elections VERY frequently, so she is tied up for the time being. If she is unable to respond to mail or whatever, bear with her. The election will be over soon! As Sara would say, "Keep up the postings!!" Talk to y'all later- Rebecca

    3. Dear Dan; Excuse me if I said 9700 pages, only 1200, but that makes it almost 3" thick. Sometimes my tongue gets in the way of my eye teeth and I can't see what I'm saying. The Pyle Book, that I call the bluebook is written by Howard Thornton Pyle and the title is "Pyle-Pile Family in America, 1642-1980" It is not available for sale any longer, but can be found in most major libraries. I found it in the Sutro Library in San Francisco. 3. Jodean; Received your query and have found the Elizabeth Piles that you mention, in fact I found Elizabeth who died in 1723 (no birth date) married Anthony Drane (no dates.) She was the dau of Frances Piles 2. This is on page 187 of the Pyle/Pile bluebook. On page 190, I found the granddaughter of Frances Piles 2 and the dau. of Leonard Piles, Elizabeth Piles marrying Thomas Drane (no dates) Leonard Piles will proved 2-21-1774 left part of his estate to Elizabeth Drane. Frances Piles 2 was born in 1660 and his son Leonard was born 1702. Leonard Piles had 9 children, the third was Elizabeth Drane, the ninth was Elizabeth the Younger. This is how our ancestors confused us. On page 9744 of the bluebook, I found the dau of James W. Pyles, Nancy Piles marrying Charles Jackson Drain on 4-3-1898 in Athens, Ohio. The address of the searcher of these marriage records is Mrs. Mary Bookover, 837 1st St., New Martinsville, WV. I'll keep an eye out for more info. 1. Nathan & John PYLES, V/WV
    2. Dear Pyle cousins, This posting is about the people that I am now convinced is my husband's line. Some of this information has been in my possession for years, some of it is new which caused me to finally realize this was it. The following is all supported by census records and marriage records. Also, this part of Marion Co had been a part of Harrison Co. Obviously this needs a lot of work but I believe this will be of interest to some of you, especially my father-in-law and also Bill Pyles. My father-in-law just learned of this on the telephone yesterday but not all of the details. Bill is planning his annual pilgrimage to W.V. and I think this may link with "his" John. John PYLES,b.@1783,probably PA, marr. Sarah BOOKER or BOOHER, on 23 Nov. 1805, Harrison Co.,Va (WV), his brother, Nathan PYLES married Barbara, the sister of Sarah, BOOKER or BOOHER, in Harrison Co. on 2 July 1807. Barbara's name is sometimes shown as Barbary or Basbany. John PYLES and Sarah had at least one child, Maria, b. 1806, (sometimes shown as Mariah). Maria married Isaac DAVIS. Nathan PYLES and Barbara had at least two children: Nancy, who married 1st to Joseph STERRETT (STARRETT), married 2nd. Isaac DAVIS. (The same one Maria had married.) John aka Jack PYLES, b. @1812, d.1881. (This is my elusive John) He married first to Susan ??? who died @1864 because there is a record of The Overseer of the Poor paying Ezri HESS $8.00 for a coffin. The family had fallen on hard times because of some illness or injury that Jack had suffered. He had been a stonemason. Jack & Susan had 7 children: Cassandra, b. 1835 Nathan,b. 1837 John, b. 1839 Elizabeth, b.1842 Anderson, b. 1845 Samuel,b. 1847 Melissa, b. 1851 John, aka Jack, married 2nd to Sarah Catherine CARICO (sometimes shown as Catherine CALICO on some records). They married 25 February 1865, in Marion Co. Sarah died @1872, apparently they had no children. The third marriage was on 29 August 1875 in Marion Co. to Anna Eliza WATKINS, b. 10 Aug. 1851. He is shown as a basketweaver on the census. They had three children: Zachery Taylor,b 10 October 1877(?) (my husband's grandfather) Nora B. b.@1878, marr. John CREIGHTON, 30 Dec. 1899 in Marion Co. Harry (Joshua),b. 1880/81, no other info. Okay, group I am hoping that one of y'all sees something familiar here. I believe that Eli PYLES may tie in possibly. There are also other PYLES that tie into the DAVIS line. Sara

    1. Ben/Annie Piles of KY/TX
    2. Hi Cousins, I am seeking information regarding the adoption of a male infant by Ben (born 1832 VA) and Mary "Annie" (born 1860 KY) Piles. According to federal censuses, they were residents of Tyler,TX (1900), Palestine, TX (1910), and Wichita Falls, TX (1920). Ben's trade is listed as farmer and horse trader. It is believed the Piles' adopted son Jack's natural parents were Irish immigrants who moved from Kentucky to Texas in the late 1800's. and settled near the Dallas/Ft.Worth area. It is also believed the Piles adoption of Jack was a compassionate act to help a relative. Ben and Annie's natural daughter Bertha Piles ( born 1885 KY) had a daughter named Jewel Colwell/Calwell (born 1909 MS) who lived with her grandparents in Wichita Falls during the 1920 census. If Pyle/Piles researchers have the surnames Martin and/or Colwell in their line, I would appreciate hearing from them, in the hope there may be Bible, letters etc. records of Jack's biological parents. Thank you, Donna

    3. Sara & All: Look at the naming pattern! Jack named his first son after his father, and his 2nd son was named John...Is it possible that John & Nathan's father was a John, if John was older than Nathan - and according to their marriage dates, that seems plausible. Ron, if that could really be true for our William, we could guess that his father is Zachariah, and his grandfather Robert. Is there a Robert who had a son Zachariah...??? And I would guess that William also had a brother named Thomas. pyle@airmail.net wrote: > John PYLES,b.@1783,probably PA, marr. 1. Eureka!
    2. Dear Cousins, This is going to be rather long and involved so if you don't want to read it, I'll understand, but you might get something out of it. As many of you know, I have been working on this John PYLE(S) line of WV for many years with spectacularly poor results. I kept running into the same records over and over again. John married to Sarah or Catherine. Last week I told you that my father-in-law, a lurker on this list, had sent me a copy of a his father's, Z. Taylor PYLE(S),marriage license that showed Jack (not John)as father. Of course, I know that Jack is sometimes a nickname but I did not know that the man had ever used that name. I may not have told you this. About two weeks ago I was taking Z.Taylor's PYLE(S) Bible to be re-bound. As I looked at it I discovered an old funeral program from the 1950s for a lady named Dora Bell DAVIS. I inquired on a W.V. list that I belong to, if anyone knew who this lady was and was contacted by some DAVIS researchers. In the meantime, my f-i-l told me that Dora Bell's maiden name had been TETRICK and that she had reared at least one of the children that Z.Taylor and Viola TETRICK had after Viola died in 1904. To make a long story short...one of the DAVIS researchers wrote me today and she had the records on John, aka Jack PYLES and his marriage to Ann Eliza WATKINS, 29 Aug. 1875. She was his third wife. This was the same John I had been running into all of these years and rejecting that it couldn't possibly be him because he was too old. Well, he was 63 and Ann was 24 at the time of their marriage. This demonstrates that you should NEVER have some set idea about ages and also that the smallest piece of paper stuck in an old Bible may have some significance. Will do the line in a separate post. Just had to share this with y'all! Sara pyle@airmail.net

Is anyone researching this family? Thanks Ann Davis Fite Whitaker. <jmw@hiwaay.net>

Dear Sara: This is NOT too long and involved! It gives me hope that there is a record out there somewhere that will help all of us in our research - specifically the Pyle line. Great news! I've changed the address of the Pyle page - just dropped the last "L". http://www.bright.net/~buzmeyer/pyle/index.htm I've been swamped this past week and expect to continue to be swamped throughout each week in September (Fiscal Year End). But, when I have a little time on weekends, I'll continue to update the Pyle page. I've also been working on my Strawser family page - and found that a big resource which had already been contributed to our mailing list was cemetery records - so we're putting them online. What about marriage records? Does someone want to volunteer to compile some available information? Excel 5.0 spreadsheets can easily be converted to HTML. There are so many things we can do this winter when the temperatures fall in Ohio! Frances has added her line to the query page, which also includes Harry Liggett's, Randy Mortimer's, Ron Pyle's, Doni Wright's and mine. Please look at it and make any suggestions or corrections - or additions. I need to know if you think the present format can be helpful. Or what do we need to change? Doni Wright has uploaded much of the information we are all searching for in his thorough Pyle family page. Anyone else that has ideas or server space or queries to add - please contribute. I don't intend for this to be "my" project - I just wanted to get the ball rolling. And I don't know that I can "teach" HTML - but I'll try if you need me to. Have a great weekend! 3. Hi Cousins; Can someone give me background on Gladys Pyle from South Dakota. Gladys was the first woman to be elected to the U.S. Senate. I see that pictures of her home in Huron, South Dakota are selling on the Web. Waiting for any information that I can enter in my forthcoming book "Piles of Importance." Due on the bookshelves around the year, 2001. Ron Pyle

    1. Re:Another Pyle cousin!
    2. We want to welcome J.M. Whitaker to the PYLE list! We are so glad to have you join us! When you have time, please tell us a little about yourself and what branch of the PYLE family you are researching. All postings should be addressed to PYLE-L@rootsweb.com If you are responding to a query, please click on "reply to all" so that the response goes to the list as well as the person making the query. The reason for this request is that someone else may have information to share or be able to get a clue on their research, by reading the exchange of e-mails. Please utilize the subject line by putting a name and location, if possible. Or perhaps, you have some information to share on another topic, for instance, migration patterns. If you are posting a very long document or gedcom, then it should be done in 2 or 3 postings rather than the whole thing at once. For instance, you might be sending xxx pt. 1, xxx pt. 2, xxx pt 3, etc. The reason for this is very simply that some providers cannot handle large pieces of mail at one time. I know that AOL has been having some problems with this. Please DO NOT send attachments to the list because there has been a problem with that on some servers. If you have a document that is too large to do a cut and paste, then post a description of it to the list to see who might want it sent directly. If you have any questions about the list or you are not sure of what to do, please e-mail me at pyle@airmail.net Sara pyle@airmail.net RootsWeb Sponsor whitaker wrote: > > subscribe > <jmw@hiwaay.net>
