We want to welcome Lynn Brosy to the PYLE discussion list! Lynn, when you have time, please tell us a little about yourself and the PYLE(S) line you are researching. All posts must be sent to PYLE-L@rootsweb.com If you are responding to a query, please send a copy to the PYLE-L list so that the response goes to the list as well as the person making the query. The reason for this request is that someone else may have information to share or be able to get a clue on their research, by reading the exchange of e-mails. Please utilize the subject line by putting a name and location, if possible. Or perhaps, you have some information to share on another topic, for instance, migration patterns. If you are posting a very long document or gedcom, then it should be done in 2 or 3 postings rather than the whole thing at once. For instance, you might be sending xxx pt. 1, xxx pt. 2, xxx pt 3, etc. The reason for this is very simply that some providers cannot handle large pieces of mail at one time. I know that AOL has been having some problems with this. Please DO NOT send attachments to the list because there has been a problem with that on some servers. If you have a document that is too large to do a cut and paste, then post a description of it to the list to see who might want it sent directly. If you have any questions about the list or you are not sure of what to do, please e-mail me at pyle@airmail.net Sara Broughton Pyle pyle@airmail.net RootsWeb Sponsor Lynn Brosy wrote: > > Subscribe
If you haven't seen the Quaker Corner, it is worth a look. Lot of good resources: http://bl-12.rootsweb.com/~quakers/ Dave
Harry, Thanks for sharing the the Pyles' Quaker records with us, but did you happen to record any in S.C. and/or GA? I live over 150 miles to the nearest library that has Hinshaw's and did not have a chance to look the last trip there. Doris

If any of you are receiving mailings from Halbert's, you might want to check out this site. Some people like to order these books because of telephone/address listings, but you can get the same thing for free on the net at the Switchboard site. http://www.switchboard.com/ Sara Check out the SCAMS FAQ in the ROOTS-L archives: gopher://ftp.cac.psu.edu/00/genealogy/roots-l/faq/faq.scams Keep scrolling on down through the early comments to near the end for a very entertaining report of tracking down "Sharon Taylor" in England.

1829, 6, 24 Nathan Pyle disowned jH Harry, Thanks for the postings of the Quaker Records. Can you tell me what the letters "jH" mean at the end of some of the entries? Also, I am particularly interested in the vol.4 post because of the Nathans and John's included. I have been checking census records ever since the big break on my PYLE line and it appears that the older John and Nathan PYLES were from PA before showing up in VA(WV). I am trying to establish a link to Washington Co.,PA. When your posting came up it was another clue. Sara
How interesting! Occasionally the Dallas paper will run a story about the southerners that went south after "the late unpleasantness". That they have tried to maintain ties with folks back home even after all these years. Would like to hear more about this. Sara RootsWeb Sponsor John Tyler wrote: > > Thanks for the warm welcome. Me again; I signed up for the Wrting family history course and already received my first lesson and homework, including a field trip. I'm already a couple of hundred pages into my family history book and am still back in the 1800's. This lesson came along as a form of "serendipity" and will give me a good push. I was letting myself get caught up with perfect grammar, by worrying about perfect spelling, the Fliesh reading ease percentages and grade levels as dictated by Bill Gates and Microsoft software. Any way, "Damn the Torpedos, Full speed ahead!" Check into this, it looks great for us people sitting here looking at all this material. Gee, Rachel's going to have to live forever to write all the history on her family. Ron.

We want to welcome John Tyler to the PYLE discussion list! John, when you have time, please tell us a little about yourself and the PYLE(S) line you are researching. If you have any questions about the list or you are not sure of what to do, please e-mail me at pyle@airmail.net Sara Broughton Pyle pyle@airmail.net RootsWeb Sponsor John Tyler wrote: > > subscribe >
Thought this would be of interest in view of our recent discussion. In other words, facts are facts and don't belong to anyone. Sara "copyright law does not prohibit the copying of facts, even newly discovered or expensively acquired facts, nor does it prohibit the copying of ideas. Harper & Row, Publishers, Inc. v. Nation Enterprises, 471 U.S. 539, 556, 105 S.Ct. 2218, 85 L.Ed.2d. 588 (1985); Kregos v. Associated Press, 937 F.2d 700, 703-10 (2nd Cir., 1991); Mazer v. Stein, 347 U.S. 201, 74 S.Ct. 460, 98 L.Ed. 630 (1954). Copyright law can only provide protection to the arrangement and coordination of facts in a database. Even then, there must be some originality to the collection and arrangement for it to be protected. See, e.g., 17 U.S.C.A. ยง 103 and cases cited therein. Typically the preparation of a database requires a significant expenditure of time, effort and money to cull and select information from many different sources, but little or no original creativity to express the facts, or arrange them. In these circumstances, where the compiler gathers and compiles raw facts, he did not create the facts, he just discovered or uncovered them, sometimes at great expense and trouble. ... To grant copyright protection based merely on the "sweat of the author's brow" would risk putting large areas of actual research material off limits and threaten the public's unrestrained access to information. ... A recent unanimous decision of the United States Supreme Court has followed the Miller line of cases and sounded the death knell to Learned Hand's sweat of the brow doctrine. Feist Publications, Inc. v. Rural Telephone Services Co., Inc., 499 U.S. 340, 111 S.Ct. 1282, 113 L.Ed.2d. 358 (1991)." for full text see http://seamless.com/rcl/article.html
