    1. Re: Howard Pyle's Book
    2. Sara, I saw a copy of the book several years ago. I believe it was in Salt Lake City. My recollection about it as a physical book is vague. I was just starting to be interested in the Pyle line at the time as a branch off my Hoar line. Scanning it would take longer than copying it. But then there would be a digital version. It would be relatively easy to correct the typos once the basic scanning was done. It would need to be carefully proofed. Unless you have a very good original the scanner may add "typos" or should we coin a new word, "scano". The real benefit would be that the product would be digital for distribution and for further editing as various cousins customize it for their own branches. If we really wanted to get fancy, the product could be published as a CD. That is getting easier and easier to do these days. Dave

    3. Larry; It's a lot smaller since I started doing my genealogy by e-mail. I did not know I was related to Ernie until I started doing my family research. The family did not talk about it and always denied it when I asked. The paper work left by my great grandmother Mary Mack pointed directly back to Dana, Indiana and it was simple following it back to my family in Ca. William Pyle (my g-grandfather) and Ernie's grandfather Samuel came to California around 1852. They operated the first ferry boat on the Sacramento river at Sutterville. Mary Mack Pyle followed them out to California in 1854 by sailing down to Panama and crossing the Isthmus with their two children. William and Samuel Pyle are in the 1860 census of California, before Samuel returned to Helt Twp. and married Nancy Hammond. My family is recognized at the Ernie Pyle Memorial as William and Mary Mack Pyle that went to Bakersfield and was never heard from again. I tried to get the information to Indiana to explain the rest of the story, but they figured I was trying a scam them. They wanted proof of the relationship and I would have gladly provided it, but they were blunt and to the point, so I said to heck with it. I'm still looking for the mother and father of Mary Mack, so if you see anything I'd appreciate hearing about it. Nice story about your mother. Even so, I will call and ask about availability and discuss the possibilities. Don't know how many on the list would even be interested and sure don't have any idea as yet as to costs. The spiral bound soft cover books are nice to work with since they lie flat. Have a lot of checking to do on this project. Sara

    1. Re: Howard Pyle's Book
    2. Dave, Well, that is an idea. Of course, there are a few errors in the book itself. Pages need renumbering, a few typos, etc. What I am hoping is that Howard might let me borrow a copy (unbound) of the manuscript to have copied (on good paper, not slick stuff). Might have to have a size reduction and/or put in two sections if we put it into spirals. Have you ever seen one of the books, Dave? I paid around $80.00 for it quite a few years ago. 1. Howard Pyle's Book
    2. Hey gang, I have this idea....probably not practical, but I think worth exploring. Because Howard Pyle doesn't intend to sell or print any more of his books, I wonder if we could get his permission to print it ourselves? We would probably want to go with a soft cover, I prefer a spiral soft-cover, which would help keep costs down and it is easier to work with than the glued in hard or soft back version. How many of you would be interested in my discussing this with Howard? Please think about this and let me know in the next few days. Okay? I know that printing can get expensive but I know a few printers and maybe one of y'all do too. Anyhow it is an idea. Think about it. Sara

    3. Harry, My great grandfather, J.J. Pyle, was a member of the Trinity Guards Militia Unit from Precinct No. 7, Kaufman Co., Tex. on 24 Aug 1861. This unit was then placed on reserve with the 13th Texas Cavalry Brigade on 3 Sept 1861. I 've found only one battle that took part in, the Battle of Pleasant Hill on the day before the big Battle of Mansfield (LA.) I have not been able to find much more on this unit. Hopefully your Library's records might contain something new for me. One thing I found very interesting (and maybe unusual) J.J. had brothers, brother-in-laws, cousins from Lamar Co. Tex. and DeSoto Parr., La. all in this unit. I almost had a heart attack when I found the microfilm roll! Thanks for the look-up offer, that's what makes this group so special. Just like a big family!! (Yes, Rita, I stole your line again!) Doris

    1. New Pyle Cousin!
    2. We want to welcome Philip Pyle to the PYLE family list! We are so glad to have you join us! Philip, when you have time, please tell us a little about yourself and the PYLE(S) line you are researching. All posts must be sent to PYLE-L@rootsweb.com If you are responding to a query, please send to the PYLE-L list so that the response goes to the list as well as the person making the query. The reason is that someone else may have information to share or be able to get a clue on their research, by reading the exchange of e-mails. Please utilize the subject line by putting a name and location, if possible. Or perhaps, you have some information to share on another topic, for instance, migration patterns. If you are posting a very long document or gedcom, then it should be done in 2 or 3 postings rather than the whole thing at once. For instance, you might be sending xxx pt. 1, xxx pt. 2, xxx pt 3, etc. The reason for this is very simply that some providers cannot handle large pieces of mail at one time. I know that AOL has been having some problems with this. Please DO NOT send attachments to the list because there has been a problem with that on some servers. If you have a document that is too large to do a cut and paste, then post a description of it to the list to see who might want it sent directly. If you have any questions about the list or you are not sure of what to do, please e-mail me at pyle@airmail.net Sara Broughton Pyle pyle@airmail.net RootsWeb Sponsor Philip F Pyle wrote: > > subscribe

    3. Dear Cousins, My Pyle ancestor was Peter Pyle. By 1860, he was listed in the Census for DeSoto Parish, LA, where many of his descendants remain today. He married Madissie Bridges on 23 July 1843 in Floyd Co., GA. This was a second marriage for him; I think his first was to a Davis. There is still Texas oil money being held for descendants of this first marriage, if they can be found. Anyone have any idea who his parents were? 2. Hi, I just discovered and joined the list, so this is my first posting. I'm stuck on Mary Ann (Polly) PILES, b. c. 1815 somewhere in KY and married in 1833 to Jacob SWISHER in Vermilion Co., IL. Mary Ann's mother (also Mary, maiden name unknown) had remarried to a James RUCKMAN in Vermilion Co. by the time of Mary Ann's wedding. Various other PILES b. in either KY or IL lived near the Ruckmans in Vermilion Co. in the mid1800s, according to census data. Any clues to Mary Ann's father or information on PILES in the Danville/Vermilion Co. area welcome. Thanks, Dixie Jordan Rusty6356@aol.com
