Any one know who the first wife of Nicholas Pyle was??. Nicholas b. ca 1748, m/2 Ann Black. He apparently had 3 or 4 issue by first wife, I have a Thomas and John W. as two of the issue. He had a total of 19 issue. I have a reference that Nicholas first wife was Mary _______.??. Nicholas father John married Sarah Baldwin, dau of John and Hannah Johnson Baldwin. This John Baldwin was the son of John and Catherine TURNER ( a widow) Baldwin. Trying to find a TURNER connection to my George TURNER Pyle, b. 1800 Richmond, VA, son of George Pyle b. ca 1766 somewhere. It may be Nicholas Pyle had a son George by his first wife??. Howard Pyle also started a group in Wilmington DE. I have the write up from the WIlmington Morning News Dated November 13, 1911...."Feeling Tributes to HOWARD PYLE. " Also a Picture was in the paper. Anyone wishing a copy, send me your snail mail address. My interest in Howard Pyle is thru a family story, my grandmother said he was a cousin. (Now how far removed...I don't know). Linda. Don't forget to mention two other students of the Brandywine School, Henrietta Wyeth and her husband, Peter Hurd. They both were (late) local artists who lived in and did such a great job of depicting the scenes in the beautiful Hondo Valley at San Patricio N.M. Also their son, Peter Hurd, is great in his own right. I've known for a long time that Howard Pyle taught them all and I always 'bragged' about it. Now that my daughter is an artist, she has taken over my job(of bragging). Keep the stories and legends coming, I love it ! Doris

He established an art school there which operated in the summertimes. Yes, they were contemporaries, but Howard Pyle was N.C. Wyeth's instructor. This is how the Wyeths and Howard Pyle became connected. So that really Howard Pyle is the founder of the Chadd's Ford group of artists. -- Anne Pyle mailto:ceannmor@erols.com
This is a note from Marjory. Date: Fri, 10 Oct 97 17:07:09 -0000 From: Marjory Payne <geopayne@mail.enter.net> To: <pyle@airmail.net> Actually it could be my server as all mail is slow. never know if its the time of year [and who wants to be inside these lovely fall days here in Eastern PA]. Or what, I will check further. I have meant to get back with a reply to one of your messages, where someone wrote about Howard Pyle and the Chadds Ford aart group. When I visited there at the Brandywine museum, they ahve works displayed of Howard Pyle and his contemporary, N.C. Wyeth. They were both magazine and book illustrators along with others whose names didn't register as not ones I knew. But the illustrations from some of the books were ones I remembered from childhood. The name of Howard Pyle meant nothing to me then. The Wyeth's have made the Chadds Ford area very famous with Andrew getting such recognition. There are those who say Andrew's work is really still in the illustration mode, but at the sums he gets I don't think that's but a minority. His paintings are in every major museum and gallery also. The grandson of N.C., Jamie is my favorite of the group, love his work. Chadds Ford is a lovely area to visit, the museum stands off the road along the Brandywine creek [river, not sure how its called] and worth a visit. The Rev War battle of Brandywine has a park to commemorate it, and Valley Forge is not that many miles away. All just west of Philadelphia and in the Delaware county area where the Pyles were. If my family connection , to the early Pyles,I am told it is, then there is a connection to the Chadd family for me.. I have a little map of the land owners in Delaware CO, but don't have a date. Those early brothers were close in distance, with their properties. Currently I am entering my Pyle data into my computer program. Just need to start getting it straightened out so can research in a meaningful manner. Too many bits and pieces. Thanks for checking on the Pyle list, I am sure I have got all somehow, probably expect a daily report and that is not happening it sounds like. Best marjory

Pat, You are probably correct. I found another group sheet that lists Samuel's wife as Sarah Owen, b. ca 1702/03 in Burlington, NJ. d. aft 26 Jan 1750 in Kennet, PA. Father was Joshua Owen and mother, Martha Shinn. Sources: Pyle-Pile Family in America" by Howard T. Pyle and "Pedigrees of Some of Emperor Charlemangne's Descendants, Vol. II" by Aileen Lewers Langston and J. Orton Buck, Jr. (Pages 212 and 213)
I had not known of Pyle's in Delaware, anyone out there have any in their background? Doris
On a Pyle Family Chart that I received from a lady in Northridge, CA. says the wife of Samuel Pyle was Sarah Pringle (?). This can be used as a clue since it is in question. Doris
I have as Samuel Pyle's wife as Sarah Pringle, aka Owen??. She m/2 after Samuel's death to David Eckhow. Samuel died 1749. Patrick Murray pat.murray@juno.com
Hi, I am still searching for the parents of my John PYLE b. 1816 in Chester co. PA. I am wondering if anyone has possibly a George PYLE born late 1700s and maybe married to an Elizabeth who could have been father to my John PYLE. I am searching for possiblities. The oldest son of my John PYle is George so I was hoping maybe he was named after his father. My e-mail address is Masttrim@epix.net Joanne
Dave; The parents of John Pyle Sr. were Samuel Pyle and Sarah( name unclear). Samuel was born on the 21st of December 1700 and was the son of Nicholas Pyle born around the year 1666 who came to America in 1683 with his brother Robert. Nicholas was a witness to the will of William Penn around the year 1712 and one of the members of the party that stood under the giant elm tree in 1683 when Penn signed treaties with the Indians. Samuel Pyle was sent back to England to become a physician and was a doctor all his life in Pennsylvania. His second son John also became a doctor and was the famous Dr./Col. John Pyle of Tory fame. I will try to see that I find Samuel's wife's full name for you. Vol XIII, 1764-1767 Owings, Robert, Frederick County, MD will pr. 25 Feb 1765 mentions dau LYDIA PILES.. Vol XIV, 1767-1772: Chesley, John, St. Mary's County, MD will pr 24 Dec 1767 mentions dau ELIZABETH PILE. Vol XV, 1772-1774: Corry, John, Charles County, MD will pr 15 Oct 1772 lists JOHN PILE as witness. PILES, LEONARD of Prince George's County will dated 19 Mar 1773, pr 21 Feb 1774 mentions children: FRANCIS PILES, ANN TOWNSEND, ELIZABETH DRANE, MARTHA HANEY, ELEANOR BERRY, LUCY SMITH, LEONAR (sic), PILES, REBECCA PILES and ELIZABETH PILES the younger. (yes, he has two daughters named Elizabeth, perhaps one is a stepchild); grandson LEONARD PILES, son of Francis. Round, James of Worcester County, will dated 24 Nov 1765, pr 31 May 1774. Petition filed to Judge for Probate Court for wills setting forth that dec'd James Round signed his will in the presence of three witnesses and two of them died in the life of the dec'd. The third, SAMUEL PILES, the only surviving witness, is a resident of the city of Philadelphia. Request made to take his deposition. (His deposition confirmed the will.) I found the following entry in Baltimore County Families, 1659-1759: JOHN PYLE and his wife SARAH, conveyed 50 acres of Pyle's Addition to RALPH PYLE of Chester Co Pennsylvania in Sept 1755. This would indicate that there was some contact between the Pennsylvania Pyles and the Maryland Pyles or perhaps this John PYle came to Maryland from Pennsylvania and is not closely related to those we think of as Maryland Piles.
