Married c. 1952, to Roy Boyer b. 29 May 1906 d. Apr 1987. After Fairmont, moved to Yankeetown, FL where Roy died and I suspect, Ivie did, too. Roy had siblings in Florida as late as 1992. Both had SSN's issued in SD, where she spent the summer of 1951, as well as some other times earlier and later. Her brother (?) Albert spent much time working at the reservation school at Pine Ridge and Keystone, SD. Ivie was a teacher, and Sunday School teacher, too, active in the Presbyterian or Methodist church. She even won an award for developing an environmental studies programme, long before the environment became the issue it is today. I would very much like to learn more about Ivie, her cousin (?) Gladys, (spouse Ryland, possibly daughters Alma & Margie), sister (?) Esther, who served with the WAACs in Carlsbad NM 1943, and Fairfield CA in 1944, and her brother, cousin or uncle, Albert and his wife Nellie and daughter, Dorothy (nicknamed Dotty), and Clarence, who served in the USN in WWII. Her grandparents were Wilson & Clarissa Shahan, and her mother's name may have been Larra or Cary. Mr. C. Lee Snider originally owned the house on Bellview Ave. where Ivie lived with Rhodena Pyles (possibly her aunt), and sold it to Ivie before he died in 1943 or 1944. Beyond this, I have nothing but the names of some mostly maiden lady teacher friends who are now dead or unable to communicate or to be traced. Linda Now, for the news ....... I got a very nice break, courtesy of several helpful people who did lookups for me in their resources. So I will share what I received. These Pyles were most likely all living in VA or WV. Through the efforts of an acquaintance of Ivie's, I've also had a letter dictated to a caregiver, by a teacher and longtime friend of Ivie Pyles Boyer. The acquaintance knew better a mutual friend who I mentioned in my letter-to-the-editor appeal for information. Ivie's friend cleared up some of my misconceptions, and reiterated the respect she generated, amongst staff and students during all of her teaching career. She also lead me to believe that the birth date in the SSDI is off a year. I found one error for certain, that of Ivie's mother's death, as I have correspondence to her and from other family members that indicates she lived at least until 1949. Hi Charlie, I thought I had the title of "not the world's greatest genealogist"! We all plug away at this, hoping for an occasional break! There are several of us with Va/WV connections. Hi gang, Just a little lesson about genealogy that we all should share. This was the family history that I was left to start my research with a little over three years ago. This was the family story as told by my great-grandmother Mary Mack Pyle to her granddaughter Lulu Spangler. PARENTS OF OUR GRANDPA PYLE. (Our GREAT*GRAND PARENTS) ROBERT PYLE Born the latter part of 1700 (Probably in the 1780's or 1790's) in the state of Pennsylvania. . moved to Ohio. He had a large family of brothers and sisters, but our Grandma Pyle did not know their names MARTHA MALONE PYLE Grandma did not know when nor where she was born. but said her maiden name was Martha Malone and that she was called MOLLIE MALONE There were four in her family . . . Martha Malone (Our Freat Grand-Mother) Frances Malone Samuel Malone, and William Malone. It seems like William Malone was not very well liked by the Mack Family as we have a letter to Grandma from our Great-Aunt Margaret Hannaman, dated from Toronto, Vermillion County,Indiana, dated March 11th,1855, telling what a scalawag he was, and what tall tales he started against the Mock family, and called him that "Devil Bill Malone...Will's Uncle". ROBERT PYLE AND MARTHA MALONE (Our Great Grand-Parents) were married in Ohio in the early part of 1800. Their children were WILLIAM ROBERT PYLE (Our Grandpa Pyle) Born March 9th, 1824, in Chillicothe.,Ross County, Ohio. He was the eldest of the family of seven. He died in Santa Ana, Orange County, California March 26th, 1890. Francis Pyle Julia-Pyle. Married a man by the name of Jones. Mary Pyle . (Same name as our (Grandma ) Martha Pyle . .Who married Albert Smith of Portland, Oregon. They had One Child named Lucy Truscott Smith. When living Albert Smith owned a lumber yard in Portland, was quite wealthy, and highly respected. so far as we know our cousin Lucy never married Samuel Pyle, There is a letter here from him dated October 15th, 1870, from Toronto, Indiana, and asking about the folks in Texas. He had two sons that we know about, one of them named after Grandpa Pyle (William) and two daughters, one whose name was Mrs. Franklin Saxon and who lived at Dana, Indiana. ALFRED PYLE.He came to California with Grandpa Pyle in 1850 or 1851. The party they were with started to California withthe Donner party but separated from it and came to California by way of Oregon. Our Great Uncle Alfred Pyle was called "Dock Pyle,?., He later returned to Toronto, Indiana, and married. There is a letter from him dated August 8th,1857, saying he would return to California whenever he could. . possibly the next year unless he bought a certain farm there in Toronto. His wife's name was Bell. note: Our Grandma Pyle said that several of the Pyle family moved to Texas, and settled near Galveston, Texas, and there are several letters to her and Grandpa Pyle here asking if they had heard anything from the folks in Texas. When our Great Grandpa Pyle (Robert Pyle) died their farm, was sold and the property divided between the children. There is a letter here from a man by the name of A. T. Smith, Florence, Williamson County, Texas, dated March 5th, 1867, to Grandpa Pyle, stating that he had Grandpa's share of the partial distribution of the estate, and if GrandPa would tell him where to send it he would send it to him. note: The names and the datet were told to me by Grandma Pyle the way she knew and remembered them. However some of the information I secured from old letters that Grandma left when she died. You will note that Our Great Uncle Samuel Pyle named one of his sons after our Grandpa Pyle (William) and there is a possibility that the William S. Pyle mentioned by your young man named Ben Pyle is the son of Samuel Pyle. However, you would have to find out from what state they all came from, and and if they know any of their Uncles and Aunts a couple of generations back. - You had better put this information in your Family Bible, Grantie., because your sons and grandsons fifty or a hundred years from now might want to know who were their antecednts and you and I and Bernice would not be here to tell them. Some day I will send you all the information of Grandma Pvle that I have here, which is very complete., and you can put the two together. Grandma told me this in 1916, and she was born in 1830, go she was 86 years old at that time and could look back almost 100 years of"-family life. In the Pyle Book, it states that Robert Pyle was born in 1800 in VA. Grandmother Mary states that William and Alfred left Indiana in 1850 or 51 with the Donner Party. (The Donner Party was snowbound in 1846), She also stated that it was Alfred and William that left, while it was actually Samuel that arrived in Ca. with William. Samuel left after 1860 to return to Indiana to marry Nancy Hammond and become the grandfather of Ernie Pyle. Grandmother tells of Mary Pyle marrying a guy named Jones, actually Mark Jones of Williamson Texas, but the Albert Smith, husband of Martha Pyle and wealthy lumberman from Portland Oregon was actually the A.T. Smith who mailed the share of the estate from Florence, Williamson County Texas in 1867. I was never able to locate Lucy Truescott Smith in my research. My father Grantie as named in the above letter did receive the rest of the story but sent it back, claiming that there were already too many monkeys in the family tree. Just wanted to pass some thoughts on to everyone and maybe catch a big one out there that has been lurking around and never realized they were related to me. Get back to you later Ron

From a book titled 'Rebels and Redcoats' by George F. Sheer & Hugh F. Franklin on page 234, chapter 18 " A Most Infernal Fire of Cannon and Musquetry," Brandywine, September 11, 1777: 234 Rebels and Redcoats his advance parties lay and occasionally skirmished with enemy patrols. Advance American pickets were out as far as Christina Bridge, and on the, seventh the whole army moved up to the village of Newport, eight to ten miles from Iron Hill, to which Howe had advanced seven miles since landing. At three A.M. on the eighth, the general alarm sounded; tents were struck, and the regiments paraded and kept under arms until nine. A line of battle was then established on the east of Red Clay Creek, and Washington waited all day for an enemy attack he felt sure would come. In the evening, the enemy halted two miles from the American position. Washington scouted them warily and supposed that their real intention was to amuse him in front, while turning his right flank and getting between him and Philadelphia. To prevent this, he set his army in motion at two in the morning of the ninth, put Brandywine Creek between his men and Howe's, and took a position on the high grounds behind one of the principal crossings, Chad's Ford. At and below the forks of the Brandywine, which were about seven or eight miles northwest of Wilmington, were a scattering of fords through which an army marching toward Philadelphia from the southwest might pass. The most likely crossing place was Chad's, and it was a good position from which to maneuver to cover the other fords or to manage a withdrawal if necessary. At Chad's Ford, Washington established his center under command of Greene. The General himself assumed direction of the defense there. He posted Wayne's Pennsylvanians on the brow of a hill near Chad's house, a little above the ford, and Weedon's and Muhlenberg's Virginians directly east of the ford. Maxwell's eight hundred light troops of Lincoln's division he placed across the Brandywine on the southern bank nearest the enemy. The right wing was composed of three divisions on the east bank of the stream,s read from Brinton's Ford, next above Chad's, to Painter's Ford. p Stirling held the extreme right, Stephen the one below him, and Sullivan, in command of the wing, the near position at Brinton's Ford. The left wing was posted on the steep, rough heights at Pyle's Ford, where there was little apprehension of a crossing; this wing was composed of a thousand Pennsylvania militia under Armstrong. To guard the fords above the right, Sullivan detached light forces to three of them and threw picket guards across the upper part of the stream. Here on the Brandywine, Washington would face his foe. Every effort was made to prepare the minds of the men, as well as their military positions, for battle. On the tenth, the Reverend Mr. Joab Trout preached to the troops his text: "All they that take the sword shall perish with the sword." And, of course, he said, the Almighty was on the right side: *. . . the doom of the British is near! Think me not vain when I tell you that beyond the cloud that now enshrouds us, I see gathering thick and fast the darker frown and a blacker storm of Divine indignation.4 * That night Howe lay at Kennett Square, six miles away. Scoutin.9 Washington, he planned to rely on the strategy that had won at Brooklyn. Brandywine 235: Hessian General von Knyphausen was to advance to Chad's Ford and make a feint of attacking there, while the main force under command of Cornwallis was to march up the Brandywine, cross the stream above its fork, turn Washington's flank, and fall on his rear. Howe was to accompany Cornwallis. At half past eight the next morning, as the fog burned away and the sun began to bear down hot and sultry, General George Weedon on the heights above Chad's Ford saw the British-green ranks of loyalist rangers and riflemen come to Maxwell on the south bank and engage. "With great firmness'? Maxwell twice repulsed them before they obliged him to withdraw in good order, about ten o'clock, across the ford. He re-formed on the near bank, and occasionally advanced across the ford during the rest of the morning to skirmish with their vanguard. To Washington he sent a report that he had killed or wounded three hundred of the enemy with a loss of not over fifty casualties. Although his figure for the enemy loss was high, they suffered severely, admitted Stephen Jarvis of their vanguard, when he confessed the ignominy of his own injury: ". . . my pantaloons received a wound, and I don't hesitate to say that I should have been very well pleased to have seen a little blood also." More and more British troops concentrated on the sheltered ground opposite the ford. Artillery began dueling. "Our battery was on an eminence which commanded the ford," remembered Weedon, "and in the cannonading made the enemy retire several times; it was better served than theirs." As the forenoon passed, Washington and his officers began to suspect that Howe was amusing them at the ford while he crossed elsewhere. A little after eleven o'clock Washington began to receive reports that the enemy was attempting to flank him, but he would not accept this intelligence until he could confirm it. He wrote to Colonel Theodorick Bland, who was patrolling with the Light Horse on the far right, to send out an officer to reconnoiter and ascertain the truth. About an hour later, Charles Cotesworth Pinckney, of the First South Carolina Continentals, was with the General near Colonel Proctor's battery on the height above the ford. He reported that the General was impatient: I heard him bitterly lament that Colonel Bland had not sent him any information at all and that the accounts he had received from others were of a very contradictory nature. About one o'clock, intelligence was brought that the enemy's left wing were marching in the Valley Road and were about crossing the Brandywine above its forks. At length, Colonel Bland sent intelligence that he had seen two of the enemy's brigades marching in that road. . . . [Stephen's] and Lord Stirling's divisions were ordered to march up the Brandywine and attack them in case they should cross, and some Light Horse were dispatched above the forks . . . to see if they actually had crossed. And they . . . brought information that there was no appearance of the enemy in that quarter, which induced the General to suppose that the movement of the enemy was a feint and that they were returning to reinforce Knyphausen at Chad's Ford.

I've had a few replies to my offer to post the PYLES obits I'm clearing off my harddrive. So I'll go ahead and do it. They will have the subject line PYLES obits just like this message so you can set up your filters, and they will be posted ONLY ONCE! As I send them to this list, I delete them. The name and location of the paper carrying them, and the date of publication will be included if I've got these facts. They may have appeared more than just once in their respective papers. These do not represent ALL PYLES obits from ALL papers. They are from papers indexed by volunteers for Obituary Daily Times. Then, just the ones that I chose because I thought they fit name or location I've been researching, or just picked at random. Check out Obituary Daily Times. http://www.best.com/~shuntsbe/obituary/ http://www.best.com/~shuntsbe/obituary/search.cgi Ensure your local paper is being indexed. Volunteer contributors get the magic codename list with volunteers' e-mail addresses, and a daily index list of over a thousand obituaries. Contributors can get the full text of the obits they request from each other, and they are much more up-to-date than the general search list, which anyone can use for free. I know of some contributors who get a photocopied list from archived papers at their library, then index them. Linda

I've been collecting PYLES obits from all over North America while researching. Now, I am trying to clear those I don't need from my crammed harddrive. If there is enough interest (I suspect there might, judging from the response on another name list I'm subscribed to), I will periodically post them to the list in bunches. Let me know, Linda
