I guess I'm new enough to the list to not know about this book? What is it's name and author, please? I would like a chance to get my hands on a copy, if just to check to see if my line is listed. (My guess is not, since I got no real positive response when I posted my tidbit of info). Thanks. jeanie hooper reed

Married c. 1952, to Roy Boyer b. 29 May 1906 d. Apr 1987. After Fairmont, moved to Yankeetown, FL where Roy died and I suspect, Ivie did, too. Roy had siblings in Florida as late as 1992. Both had SSN's issued in SD, where she spent the summer of 1951, as well as some other times earlier and later. Her brother (?) Albert spent much time working at the reservation school at Pine Ridge and Keystone, SD. Ivie was a teacher, and Sunday School teacher, too, active in the Presbyterian or Methodist church. She even won an award for developing an environmental studies programme, long before the environment became the issue it is today. I would very much like to learn more about Ivie, her cousin (?) Gladys, (spouse Ryland, possibly daughters Alma & Margie), sister (?) Esther, who served with the WAACs in Carlsbad NM 1943, and Fairfield CA in 1944, and her brother, cousin or uncle, Albert and his wife Nellie and daughter, Dorothy (nicknamed Dotty), and Clarence, who served in the USN in WWII. Her grandparents were Wilson & Clarissa Shahan, and her mother's name may have been Larra or Cary. Mr. C. Lee Snider originally owned the house on Bellview Ave. where Ivie lived with Rhodena Pyles (possibly her aunt), and sold it to Ivie before he died in 1943 or 1944. Beyond this, I have nothing but the names of some mostly maiden lady teacher friends who are now dead or unable to communicate or to be traced. Linda Now, for the news ....... I got a very nice break, courtesy of several helpful people who did lookups for me in their resources. So I will share what I received. These Pyles were most likely all living in VA or WV. Through the efforts of an acquaintance of Ivie's, I've also had a letter dictated to a caregiver, by a teacher and longtime friend of Ivie Pyles Boyer. The acquaintance knew better a mutual friend who I mentioned in my letter-to-the-editor appeal for information. Ivie's friend cleared up some of my misconceptions, and reiterated the respect she generated, amongst staff and students during all of her teaching career. She also lead me to believe that the birth date in the SSDI is off a year. I found one error for certain, that of Ivie's mother's death, as I have correspondence to her and from other family members that indicates she lived at least until 1949. Sara, Samuel Pyle and Charity were my ggg grandparents. His brother, John Pyle married Mary Maxwell. They both were in Oglethorpe Co. GA on the 1800 census. It is said they came from SC in the late 1790's. We do not have any proof of parents of John and Samuel nor siblings. Those who have posted that a Samuel PILE and his wife SARAH ? were their parents have offered no documentation of that. I've tried to research ALL Pyles/Piles in NC, SC, and GA. and have come up with so many Samuels and John's that it isn't funny anymore. There are several more on this list from both Sameul/Charity and John/Mary lines. Terri in GA has been sending me some VERY INTERESTING records lately. Maybe they will prove out to be as successful as our Kilgore discovery ! Those of you who are TEXIANS should go to Washington-on-the-Brazos. We went this week-end and it was fantastic! Of course, I didn't find John's name on any plaques, but just knowing he was there in the middle of things was a heart wrenching experience, especially knowing they lived through the Run-away Scrape. This group has been pretty calm lately, guess it's time to 'liven' it up, huh? Doris

Hi Sara and all: You wrote: "Thanks for your note. Actually, it is Doris, Irene M. and Carolyn L. working on this I believe. It is one of the southern Pyle lines." I believe (ultimately) my line will tie to this one as well. My computer is still in the shop, hopefully to be returned this week. My database is on that machine. I'm using my son's computer to monitor e-mail right now. I'll be back with you soon! P.S. Feeling great! Rita Davis Atlanta, GA
Hi Dave, Thanks for your note. Actually, it is Doris, Irene M. and Carolyn L. working on this I believe. It is one of the southern Pyle lines. Note to Carolyn: could you please jump in on this discussion. I think you, Irene and Doris may want to compare notes. There may be others here on the Pyle list that would be interested, so please write to the list. Thanks. Sara DRDowell@aol.com wrote: > > Sara, > > It is hard to make sense of this without dates. Hi Irene, When I spoke with Howard Pyle a few weeks ago, he was talking as though the book will be reprinted but he didn't give me a clue as to when. Have you checked with your local library to see about an interlibrary loan? I recall getting a book from the state library in Austin that way. (Not a Pyle book.) I am going to send you my telephone number and address by personal e-mail in the event we can plan a meeting in order for you to see the book. I would like to know if someone could tell me if the Pyle book is in the Clayton Library in Houston, Texas? If not who could I contact to get information on how to purchase one? Thanks Irene
Hi, Being everyone has been so quiet over the holidays, I would like to start Dec. First off with a question concerning the Pyle Book, before I leave for school today. It has often bothered me that on page #212, we find Francis 1, Francis 2, James 3, James 4 and Zachariah 5. Zac was married twice (1) Rachel Wright, (2) Susannah Lezar At the bottom of the page we find: Zachariah Piles Jr. born ca 1799, married Mary_____ Issue, seventh generation: Elizabeth Piles, Harriet Piles, Jane Piles and Francis Piles. Francis Piles married Eunice Ammons and their issue was George Uylesses Piles and Joseph G. Piles. This is from the census of Bartholomew Co. Ind. 1850. NOW: on page 488 of the Pyle book, we find Zachariah Pyle 2, born ca 1799, son of William 1, married to Mary Ezra and their children were: Maria Pyle, William Pyle gone by 1850, Elizabeth Pyle, Lydia Pyle, Harriet Pyle, Malinda Jane Pyle, Minerva Pyle and again Francis Pyle. In Zac's will on page 1112, dated September 1867 in Fountain Co., Indiana, we find all those other names of his children like Francis, and Richard and Thomas. If anyone can figure this puzzle out, I would like to be the first to know! I also find a Mary Jones back in the Francis 1's section. Ron Pyle
Here is a web page sent to me from Bill Bither. I am searching the Bristol surname and have been on this list for a long time. The history on his page is fantastic, especially concerning the Mayflower and our first Thanksgiving. http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Acres/6307/ Ron Pyle Searching: Bristol, Doody, Fowler, Harvey, Johndrow, Kane, Mack, Malone, Neimantsverdriet, Pyle, Rea, Roche, Yacobuchi.
Although I have subscribed to the PYLE list for sometime, I do not believe I have posted my query. My great-grand parents were Enoch PILES/PYLES and Emma FRENCH. This PYLES family was from Orange County North Carolina, and moved to Bartholomew Co. Indiana ca 1838. Most of their N.C. records seem to be in Guilford Co. In a will of JOSEPH PYLES recorded in Guilford Co. North Carolina in 1835 he mentions his brothers, William, Moses, Wiley, George, Nathan, Enoch, James and sister Sarah Hughes. He says his mother's name is ELIZABETH SIMPSON. Joseph says he is from Orange County. Before leaving North Carolina George W. married Sarah Rhoads, William married Molly Rhoads, Moses married Susannah Rhoads. I believe these are three daughters of Mary and Phillip Rhoades and all marriages or recorded in Guilford Co. North Carolina. James PILES married Hester PYLES in Orange County, NC. He died Oct. 4, 1865 from Illness related to the Civil War. When Hester applied for a pension as Summary of Proof Enoch and George testified that Hester and James had been married about 35yrs. That Hester was a PYLES and a cousin. The marriage had happened in Orange County, but that no living had attended. He also said the name had been spelled PILES, but was corrected to PYLES. He did not say why. Wiley PYLES and James both died as result of the Civil War. Wiley was sixty years old when he died Sept. 25, 1864 at Decatur, Alabama. He still had two children under 16, and I do not know why he enlisted at such an advanced age. Both their enlistment records show them born in Orange Co. North Carolina. In 1855 Elizabeth SIMPSON sues Enoch PYLES over a land dispute. In the document she says she is his mother. I would love to hear from anyone with knowledge about this family.
