Dear Rita, Thank you for sharing your feelings and experiences about the holidays. There are many who have had similar experiences as a result of divorce or death. It is heartwarming to know that special someone may show up in one's life at any time and transform the holidays into a joyous experience again. Congratulations on your marriage and new family. Happy holidays to all! Sincerely, Sharon Doyle Houston TX SSdoyle1@aol.com (Divorced for 12+ years)
In the Volumes of MAGNA CHARTA, by John S. Wurts, is listed Mary Turner Polk Pyle as a descendant of certain Lords and Kings. Does anyone know of this person??. She apparently contributed some data to the this series of 8 volumes which was printed in 1944. Patrick Murray pat.murray@juno.com
Dear Cousins: I decided to write about new traditions. I am very excited about beginning new traditions this very Christmas. You see, I was divorced eleven years ago, and I spent many a lonely Christmas wishing I had someone to spend the holidays with. Of course, I had my son, and my parents and siblings, but I was lonely and the holidays always seemed to make that worse. I would be horribly depressed, closing the drapes, turning otu the lights, sitting in the dark. But a couple of years ago at a business convention, I met a wonderful man from Atlanta, GA. He was worth the long wait. :) We were married this past February and this will be our first Christmas together as husband and wife. He has two daughters from his first marriage (18 and 13) and I have my son (14). Last year I picked up my entire life in Arkansas and moved to Atlanta to be with him. This Christmas, he and I went to one of those Christmas tree lots and bought the first real live tree I've decorated since I was 14. I've bought presents for my two new stepdaughters (and of course my son). I have a whole new set of in-laws that I've come to love very much and shopping for them was a new treat, too. We're planning a special dinner tomorrow night for our new family (divorced and blended families have to juggle which days to celebrate, but that's okay, too) and we will open our presents. Saturday, we will go to a Christmas brunch with some of my husbands oldest and my newest friends. Sunday, we are going to visit some older relatives of my husbands. Monday, he is taking me to see The Nutcracker, and Tuesday we're taking the kids to see A Christmas Carol. Christmas Eve will be spent with my new in-laws and friends who drop in on them every year. And Christmas day we will leave for Arkansas to see my family. Although I've had wonderful Christmases with family and loved ones, I've never had a Christmas like this, this full and warm and wonderful, to share with someone I love so much. This is just my first Christmas in a whole new life of new traditions and I am so grateful for it. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year! Rita Davis
Tradition in my family was and is what is cooked for Christmas dinner. Through the years the dinner has changed but there are some things that stay the same. Pea salad - my step-mom always fixed pea salad - last Christmas was the first time for as far back as I remember she did not fix pea salad - not the kind with cheese and mayonnaise but with a wonderful vinegarette. I made the pea salad last year and will this year. Mom Judy died a year ago last November. I was fortunate in having two fathers and two mothers. My parents were divorced and both remarried to wonderful people. Christmas was spent with both sets of parents, Christmas Eve with my Mom and step-father and Christmas Day with my step-mom and Dad. Mom always fixed ambrosia - apples, oranges, grapefruit, red and green cherries and no dressing just the juices from the fruit. The telling of my great grandmother singing "Silent Night" was always a must until my grandmother Alma died. My great grandmother was in church for mid-night mass on Christmas Eve, everyone was singing "Silent Night" and one by one everyone else stopped except for my great grandmother. She was singing in German her parents native language amid people of German backgrounds. When she finished there apparently was a deep silence and a feeling of sweetness and holiness in the church as the service continued. Strange how traditions seem to cease when a person is no longer living. Dolores in Texas
Thanks for the kind words, Marjory. I think we have a great bunch of folks on this maillist! Regarding the archives, there are two archival systems going on right now that I have posted the urls for. One of those only has the archives back to Nov. 18. The other url has ALL of our notes back to the inception of the list in July. If you click on the following url it should take you there. If you have any problems please let me know. http://searches.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/listsearch.pl Happy holidays! We are still looking for parents/siblings of Martha Jane Pyle, b GA 12/25/1846. Death certificate says "not known" for names of Mother and Father. (Martha Jane was away from home, visiting her daughter when she died.) Martha Jane married James Joseph Newton Fulmer in St. Clair Co, AL, 4/11/1865. They were still in Alabama in 1883 and were in Texas by 1885. 1860 AL census shows a Martha Piles, 14, living with a Mary Piles, head of household, in Harpersville (Shelby Co), AL. Others in the household include: William, 18, Russ 16, Sallie 12, and Daniel W. 10. All born in GA. Would appreciate any help/leads/wrecking ball to break down this brick wall! Carolyn & Wayne Fulmer
My family wasn't big on traditions for Christmas so will pass on that one. But I want to take the time to thank you for the Pyle list, the information that keeps coming and will come in the future. I have to try the archive again, I did at the first but only found Nov. there so need to go back earlier. Haven't made any close connection, but have been pleased to find those of the family. But most of your list seem to be southern lines,my family [s] will hook up eventually. Also it's interesting to read so many references to The Blue book as you call it. I remember when I found their ad in the Helper, wrote to see if they had a connection for me, didn't, ordered the book and they had my familylisted in the unknown lines in the back and there was another family who were cousins to my John B. Very exciting for me as was the first Pyle connection I had made. The book needs a complete rewrite as you have so many lines now. Hope there will be someone up to the challenge to do so, and in the meantime I am forever grateful the Pyles took the time energy and money to compile the records they did. Thanks and I look forward to another year of the list. Marjory

We lived near the Trinity River in Kaufman/Henderson County and we would go to the 'free range' area of the river bottom flood plain and gather pecans for Christmas baking and also to sell for Christmas gifts. We usually worked several week-ends to get enought to sell. My parents would go to Waxahatchie to shop while we were at school. We knew when they had been shopping as soon as we came inside the house, you could smell apples and oranges. That was during the late 30's and early WW II years and we only had 'store' bought fruits at Christmas time. We drew names at school, then the last day before Christmas vacation, we had a Christmas Tree in the gym at and placed all the presents under it and the whole community came. We sang carols and Santa passed out the gifts and just had a great time. The last year I attended that school (11 years old) I got a bottle of Jergen's lotion wrapped in a brown paper bag. To this day, I don't know who gave that to me!! Merry Christmas Ya'll from TEXAS !!! Doris
Dear Pyle cousins, With the holiday season here I was thinking that it would be enjoyable if we share any traditions or favorite memory of the holiday season that we have. It seemed that we always had pecans, walnuts and other nuts mainly during the holidays. Walnuts were one favorite, but I didn't like them to eat as much as pecans. I liked to play with the shells. Sometimes I would paint them different colors or put faces on them. When I was a child my parents would drive a few miles to an area where there were many pecan trees. We would pick from some of the thousands of pecans that had fallen to the ground and were hidden in the leaves. The day we did this was usually very brisk but sunshiny with a beautiful blue sky. After we had filled a bag of carefully selected nuts we would go home and start to shell them for mother to use in her baking and candy making. Naturally, I would eat some of them as soon as I would get them shelled, they were so good! Mama would bake wonderful pecan pies and other goodies using pecans throughout the holiday season. I loved pecans so much that Santa would put some in my stocking along with oranges and other fruits. It is with sadness many years later that I drive past that same area which long ago became a strip shopping center, popular for a while, now fallen into disrepair and vacant. Now we buy our pecans at the grocery store but they never seem to be as good as the ones we used to get from the trees many years ago. Sara

Dear Pyle cousins, Just had to let you know that at this moment we are at 100 active members on the PYLE list!! Several cousins dropped out when school started or for other reasons,if they were still with us we would have crossed this milestone much sooner. This is really wonderful! I know that many of you have visited our new archives and have given me glowing reports. There is a time when the messages will drop off from the site. I don't recall the number or the frequency that the messages will be dropped but I advise everyone to take advantage of this service provided us by RootsWeb unless you have been on the maillist from its beginning in mid July of this year. The url is: http://searches.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/listsearch.pl Sara
