A Christmas Incident T'was the night before Christmas, and all through the chart The times that were empty would sure break your heart. The pedigree chart was laid out with care, In hopes that St. Nicholas would know who or where. The searcher was nestled all smug in his bed While visions of ancestors danced through his head. Soundly asleep-both upstairs and down All in a nightcap and ankle length gown. When out on the lawn there arose such a clatter, I jumped from my bed to see what was the matter. When much to our wonderment there did appear Good old St Nicholas with a grin to each ear. his bulk was tremendous, his eyes full of glee He laughed as he picked up the sad pedigree. He shouted and roared and ripped it to bits While I swallowed my heart and went into fits. "Dash it all, dash it all." I heard him then say, "This clutter and mess was just in my way." I said not a word and he started his job He sat down at once and his pencil did jog. A new pedigree he filled out in two winks Giving names, dates and places and all missing links. Clear back to Adam, and down to the last For ageless was he, having served in the past. I thought-Oh, how wonderful it would all be if he did for others what he did for me As he finished and blotted the ink not quite dry A sadness came over and I then did cry. He gave me the details and seemed to have fun- But, now all my ancestor chasing was done! He bounced out the window and i heard him say, "For others I'll do the same any old day, Just tell them my number and be good and kind." But then a sure thought came into my mind--- Nobody wants ancestors that fast and so good--- I'll let everyone else do the job as they should--- ---Author Unknownj
Carolyn and Wayne, Glad to see you on this list. I'm hoping that some of the Pyle families that stayed in GA longer than mine might be able to help you find your Martha Jane. She could possible be from 'our' southern line, so those of you (and you know who you are) dig into your databases and see what you have!!! I do not have much info on Abraham, does anyone else? How about Samuel? (both sons of Samuel and Charity) Hope this new year brings us many more Pyles', (but not many Johns and Samuels)!!!! MERRY CHRISTMAS YA'LL from Texas
Here is a copy of a letter I mailed off today after checking the Bratton web site, I believe that I will for sure end up as my own grandpa. Ron ---------- From: Ron Pyle <piguy@goldrush.com> To: RuthMickelson@Prodigy.com Subject: Bratton, Ward, Milliken Date: Tuesday, December 23, 1997 3:08 PM Ruth; You and I have communicated in the past concerning our connection with Wilson R. Bratton who married my Great Aunt Frances Pyle in 1855 in Vermillion County, Indiana and then moved to Florence, Williamson County Texas. Wilson was a postmaster in Vermillion County from July 5, 1854 to March 3, 1855. Now I see the name Milliken tossed about and have a relationship to Bertha Milliken who was a descendent of the Malones. My great-great-grandmother was Martha Malone Pyle. Then to confuse matters even more I find the Bratton webpage looking at Ward. My great-great-great grandparents were Richard Mack and Betty Harvey Mack who were the parents of Samuel Mack. His daughter Mary Jane Mack married Hiram Ward who lived in Bourbon County Kansas at the time of the 1880 census. Mary Jane Mack Ward died in Chandler, Oklahoma in 1912. Her daughter who has the family bible is Alice Ward Young. My sister is Valerie Young, whose father-in-law and Mother-in-Law, Elmer and Lois Young are from Oklahoma. Elmer is one of 13 children This genealogy is getting too eerie to suit me! Ron Pyle Angels Camp, Ca.

Carolyn and Wayne, Can't help directly, however can offer one suggestion. When my own grandfather died, his six children were in the room with the funeral home officials. His children answered all questions but the question concerning his parents was never asked and it came out on the death certificate as UNKNOWN. Not true. However in the obituary in the newspaper it did tell who his parents were. Is it possible that there was even a county weekly newspaper that might have given any info? You might try from that angle. Have a good holiday, and good luck. Still looking for parents/siblings of Martha Jane Pyle, b 12/25/1846 GA. Thought we might have finally found names of her parents when we located a copy of her death certificate. However, Martha Jane was away from home, visiting her daughter when she died, and death certificate says "not known" for names of Mother and Father. Martha Jane married James Joseph Newton Fulmer in St. Clair Co, AL, 4/11/1865. They were still in Alabama in 1883 and were in Texas by 1885. 1860 AL census shows a Martha Piles, 14, living with a Mary Piles, head of household, in Harpersville (Shelby Co), AL. Others in the household include: William, 18, Russ 16, Sallie 12, and Daniel W. 10. All born in GA. Search of Shelby County records was fruitless. Would appreciate any help/leads/wrecking ball to break down this brick wall! Carolyn & Wayne in Louisiana

I opt for a database program that I can put in my own titles and place items on a page the way I want to. I assume this is now in WordPerfect with Windows95 from what was said? I have used Microsoft Works on my old computer program [bef Windows95] and the database was wonderful just not enough memory. Dolores I would opt for a database program that the headings are of my own choice.

Dave, Thanks for the idea. What you are saying certainly makes sense. I know what you mean about any one program not doing just everything you want it to. What kind of a page numbering system does the Family Origins assign to a chart? Thanks for the info and have a really Merry Christmas. Linda, If your genealogy program exports reports to a text file OR if you have a Windows based genealogy program and can block and move, you do not have to type in the information again to move it to WordPerfect or Word. Dave

Dave, I assume that Family Origins is an entire program for genealogy. I have been on PAF since 1989, and have over 10,000 individuals in my system. So you can understand I don't really want to change, and I feel very comfortable with PAF. Now if Family Origins is not the entire thing, PLEASE tell me more. I just want a program that if I type in names and page numbers it will order and resort when ever I need it to. Thanks for the answer. Dolores Miltenberger
I use a program called "SKY INDEX ''. Works well for me. I purchased it a few yrs back. If your interested I can try and find the address for you. Patrick Murray pat.murray@juno.com
Charlene, You are correct. I didn't express myself very well. Family Origins is a complete program. It automatically generates a lot of different reports. I also have large files: two with about 8,000 names each and two with about 2,000 each. One thing you might consider is outputing a GEDCOM file and loading it into a program like Family Origins to generate your report. That way you don't disturb your original data file and you can experiment with different ways to present your data. I often move my data between Family Tree Maker and Family Origins in order to get my final report to look like I want it to. Each program has some formats that others do not. Happy Holidays, Dave
Fellow Researchers! Do any of you use a program to index persons and page numbers (just like in the back of the best books (the unindexed ones are so sad)? When I get too many people to remember in a line, I number my charts and then index them. Makes it so much easier when one is on line to see if you connect to someone else. Thanks for reading. And everyone have a safe and wonderful HOLIDAY. M. Charlene Davis Altus, OK
Charlene, Family Origins is among the genealogy programs which will create an index of the page numbers on which individuals appear. I'm not sure this is what you were looking for. Dave
