    1. [PYLE] Nicholas PILES - PYLE, born c1803, not c1793
    2. I'm beginning to get a better handle on the Nicholas PYLE story (son of Samuel and Charity (EASON) PILES of SC and GA) as a result of some census work I had a chance to do this weekend. For starters, Nicholas PILES/PYLE was born c1803, not c1793, based upon his entry in the 1860 Kaufman Co TX census, where he appears with his brother John. Nicholas is 57 in that census, not 67. The entry is, at first glance, a little deceptive, and the 5 can be misread as a 6. But closer examination shows it's a 5 with a small smudge that nearly closes the bottom loop. I have no doubt it is a 5. This information meshes better with the only other indication I know of regarding Nicholas's age, that is the 1840 Kemper Co MS census where he reports his age as 30 to 40 years (not 40 to 50 years). This information has several important implications for researchers of Samuel PILES and Charity EASON. For one thing, their first child was apparently not born until 1795 (Thomas), instead of 1793, which gives then a little more time to have gotten married and started a family (relative to the information that Samuel was born in the 1770-1774 time frame). Also, it may be significant that they chose to name their first child Thomas, and waited until after four or five sons to name one Nicholas. Perhaps the association to the earlier Nicholas PILES of South Carolina is not as close as imagined earlier. This new understanding helps a bit with the places of birth of the children, which was a source of some confusion. In 1860, John says he was born in SC, and Nicholas says he was born in GA. Those reports, which were confusing when we thought Nicholas was born before John, now make sense. John was born in SC before the family migration to Oglethorpe Co GA, and Nicholas was born after the migration. The four sons who appear in the 1800 GA census were therefore likely Thomas, John, Samuel, and Abraham. Nicholas came later. One small problem is that things get a little tight around Peter (born c1803), and James (born c1804). Perhaps two of these three later sons were twins, or perhaps they were spaced out a little differently. An 1803 birth date also works a little better for Nicholas, son of Samuel, in that he first appears in 1825 in Covington Co MS, with his (older) brother John PYLE (when he would have first become an adult); and it means he married at the age of around 28 (in 1831 to Mary WESTBROOK) rather than at the age of 38, which seemed old. One more census treasure: Nicholas seems to have been in Floyd Co GA in the 1848 to 1852 time frame, according to promissory notes that appear in Floyd Co GA records (Thank you Doris HAYNES). But there is no entry for Nicholas in the 1850 census. I gave 1850 Floyd County a pretty close look, but found nothing that offered even the possibility of Nicholas and family having been there but misenumerated. I did run across an Everitt FILES (age 16, born GA, a laborer in the household of a "mechanic", page 109.) The age is a bit off, but I suspect this is Everitt V. PILES (age 18 born GA), and can imagine that age 16 was a guess by Everitt's employer. (He would have been closer to 18.) Everitt's presence is a clue that Nicholas was there also, but simply missed, since he was a "renter", not a land owner. Thanks also to Carolyn FULMER, who has generously shared information that has been essential to sorting out this story. Jim Smee Pittsburgh PA

    1. [PYLE] THE PYLE FAMILY IN JOHNSON COUNTY, MISSOURI

    1. [PYLE] Newton Pyle and other Texas Pyle's
    2. Michele Thompson / Jason Douglas
    3. John Robert Pyle (b. 1855 d. 1932) buried in Lynche's Chapel Cemetery in Texas is the father of Newt Pyle. (J.R. went by the name of Robert) Newt Pyle is J.R.'s son from his first (?) marriage. I am told by my grandmother that he also had a daughter named Lila Pearline Pyle from his first marriage. But I do not know the name of his first wife or why the marriage ended (divorce, death???) His second (?) marriage was to L. Ophelia Landrum who I believe was born in Georgia. (I am trying to discover who her parents are) Marriage was July 29, 1890 in Cherokee Co. TX. Ophelia brought a daughter to the marriage - Ada Iula Landrum (my great grandmother). Together they had several children: Mart Lafayette Pyle b. 1892 d. 1962 Eva Pyle b. 1894 Vassie Carmella Pyle b. 1895 d. 1971 James Earlie Pyle b. 1898 d. 1953 John Henry Pyle b. 1900 d. 1957 Joe Lee Pyle b. 1905 d. 1961 Lila Pyle I am slowly putting this puzzle together, so if anyone has more info or corrections on any of this let me know. Most of the children listed above are listed on the 1910 census and some of the name spellings are wrong on the census. I would like to know for sure who J.R. Pyle's parents were?? I do have some info on marriages for the children listed so if anyone needs them just let me know. michele [email protected]

    1. [PYLE] Chester County Pyles
    2. Ruth: I am sorry that I didn't include PA after Chester County. I suppose its because so many of the Pyle family stayed in that area that I just assumed there was only one Chester County. You are correct, it was Pennsylvania. Thank You for responding.Bob Beckman

    3. I noticed some letters recently referring to a creek near Fallingwater that is apparently named after someone named Pyle. When we went whitewatering in that area, the town where we put in the river was very close to Fallingwater. Its name was Ohiopyle! Sounds like one of ours was, perhaps, an early settler in that region. Carol Rowe Bradenton, FL

    3. The story sounds familiar, however, the names don't match. These gentlemen are my grandfather and uncle respectively. Paul (Leslie) Pyle (Sr.) 48018 Warnock Glencoe Rd Saint Clairsville , OH PYLE PAUL (Leslie, Jr.) 48044 WARNOCK GLENCOE RD SAINT CLAIRSVILLE OH My cousin, Paul Leslie Pyle III was last residing in CA. Paul Pyle (Sr), was born in 1913. His father was Walter Booth Pyle, m Lucille Etta Neiswonger. Walter and Lucille were divorced in 1920. (She filed based on 3 years of abandonment) She was forbidden from reconcilliation with Walter by her family, who were rather well-to-do in the early part of the last century. Lucille remarried and Walter sons, Paul and George Pyle were raised in the Walter Willison family. Whereabouts of Walter Booth Pyle post marriage remain something of a mystery. The father of Walter Booth Pyle was Harry Pyle, m. Emma Mathers, a young immigrant from England, in Belmont Co., Ohio. Harry died in WV circa 1920 (courtesy of Mr. Smee, thank you sir) My Aunt Nancy Pyle (wife of Paul Pyle Jr.)had a family history for the Pyle family. She unexpectedly passed away in the fall of 1998. Due to the loss, I hadn't broached the topic of accessing her files with my uncle. I'll be back in Ohio in early July for the Jeffers family reunion. I'll speak with my uncle to see if he has the information available. I wish I could be more specific on the dates, etc.. but I'm at the office and my files are at home. 3. Dear Gerry, I have a copy and my cousin in wheeling has a copy. If you would like me to copy the chapter on the PYLE family and send it to you, you must first tell me your lineage as far back as you can go. If we are related, I will know it by the names you mention. Then I'll be glad to send you as much info as I have. And believe me, it's a treasure trove, including photos dating back as far as 1864. I hope we can make a connection. 3. Dear M, It's too bad that your relative was so stingy about sharing or duplicating the family tree. After all, no one member of a family owns the whole family's history. It belongs to your whole clan. I'm sorry we couldn't make a connection. I would've been happy to share my family's history with another relative. 3. 5 June, 2000 Dear Gerry, Thank you very, very much for your reply. I have queried on this forum for several years without any tangible results. Every attempt to find out anything about Curry Pyle seems to have been stymied, and there is a reason here in Indiana that goes back into the last century. Anyway, again thank you. And, yes, I would very much like to have the picture of George and his brothers and sisters! By the way, you say you have an uncle in Geneva: probably he is related to me also. If you have more information, please contact me. I would love to know more about your gg-grandfather, my gg-grandfather's brother. You may contact me either through the roots web medium or at my e-mail, which is [email protected] I am especially interested in your Florida connection. Does it begin with George's brother? It may be why Curry ended up going down to Florida. Anyway, I'd love the picture and any more info. Thank you very much! 3. 5 June 2000 Dear Paul, In reply to your query about the family tree that I saw in 1967: no, it was not what you have described; indeed, it was about one of the most facinating documents of my family that I have ever seen. It was a hand made family tree in the shape of a tree per se, and each person was listed, not only by name, but also by profession(!), and in a few instances, such as where one had been a doctor, addenda such as "He was the first college graduate in the family", etc. It was beautifully done, but let me add a lurid note: when I questioned the individual about making a copy of the family tree, he closed up like a slamming door, grabbed the document as if I were going to print it (or something) without his permission, and I was not allowed to see it again. I was eighteen years old at the time, and I could not figure out what was going on. To this day, I look back on the incident with both amusement and much curiosity and wonder. I would love to see the document again. It had family members listed back to the early 1700's, and maybe even further back, I don't remember anymore. 3. I grew up in Belmont Co., Ohio (just across the river from Wheeling)and I don't recall seeing a Pyles Run. My Mother's maiden name was Pyle, but she doesn't recall that location either. There was an early Pyle family in Belmont Co., Ohio that lived in Colerain circa 1812. Researching this family may bring about your answers. My Mother's family (PYLE) has lived in and around Wheeling since the 1840's. I have never heard of Pyle's Run, but I will ask my second cousin Bob Pyle if he knows anything about it. I'll let you and the list know if I find out anything. I think there is a local Historical Society in Wheeling that might be of some help, too.
