    1. [PYLE] Kentucky Pyle's
    2. george pyle
    3. I have gotten a lot of responses on my Sumner Tennessee connected great great grandfather William Pyle. Some of the leads I am still perusing. I have been searching for my grandfathers parents for many years. I believe his father was Jehu Pyle, because this name keeps coming up in places that count, but at this point I still do not have proof. I keep coming back to the following data. Jehu Pyle the son of John and Sarah (Baldwin) Pyle married Rutha Lindley August 8, 1786. Rutha Lindley was born January 7, 1768. The dates match somewhat, my William Pyle was born 1805, that would have made his mother 37 years old when he was born (?). I do not have any birth date for this Jehu Pyle. If anyone has any data on this I would appreciate it. George Pyle Christian County Kentucky

    1. [PYLE] English PILEs please.

    3. I have been sitting on the sidelines reading all the mail and it would appear that this list is exclusively for people researching in the USA. My PILE family is from Devon in the south of England - with connections going back to 1700. A branch has its origins in Co.Durham. If there is anyone on the list who is researching this name in the UK I may be able to help them! Patricia Taylor.

    1. [PYLE] MARY PYLES Tombstone Inscription
    2. Judy, A very quick question: In what way does the name PYLES (this spelling) appear on Mary's tombstone? I guess what I'm asking is for an exact transcription of the inscription, for example, is she Mary PYLES, wife of Fairfax PELL or something like that? And just for completeness, is hers a Preston Co WV death certificate? Thanks again for this valuable information. Jim Smee Pittsburgh PA

    3. Shirley,do you have Moses father, Isaac's wife and children recorded? What Kentucky Census were you using for Rebecca in 1860? I am seeking the parents of my great great grandfather William Pyle/Pile and some have suggested Isaac might be his grandfather. A long shot, but if one of Isaac's children is the person they think was my grandfather's father, I will have made a match. 1. [PYLE] Piles, Pyles in Ross Co, Ohio
    2. Steve & Marlene Giardini
    3. Hello, I am looking for information about Piles families in the area Richmondale (Ross Co), Ohio. My ggrandparents were Jacob Piles *1824 - 1881) and Elizabeth Smith (1825 - 188?). They were married in Chillicothie on 30 April, 1849. There children were as follows: Nellie, Mary, Nicholas, Jacob, William, Ebanezer, Rochanna, and John. I am related through Mary. I have come to a complete dead end, and cannot trace Jacob back beyond 1850. Any additional information on this family would be greatly appreciated. Steve Giardini

    2. Hello Judy, I noticed later last night that Fairfax PELL [53] and Mary [46] were enumerated in Preston Co in 1850 (Household #455), so I was having a problem with the 1829 birth date for Mary. Thank you for the clarification, and for providing this proof that Mary was the daughter of Hunter and Nancy. I think the proof was new to a lot of us. There is a lot of misinformation (speculation that has assumed the mantle of fact) on this particular branch of the family. Lots of problems with dates and names, in the PYLE Book (no offense to that treasure) and elsewhere. You've added a pretty solid piece of the puzzle. Jim Smee Pittsburgh PA

I have a lot of information on my great great grandfather but I can not trace him back to his parents. >> George, I wish I could help, but can't. Per the 1830 census, where the three are near neighbors, we have that: Joshua was born either 1790-1800, or 1770-1780. If the former, he's probably a brother. If the later, he might be the father of the others. The older male (1770-1780) might be Joshua, or might be his father-in-law. John was born 1790-1800. (Sarah PYLE bought some land from John BELL in 1835 in Sumner County. I'm thinking this may have been John PYLE's widow, since John does not appear in the 1840 census.) William was born 1800-1810. (born 1805 NC per the 1850 census) This isn't a lot to go on, and I don't have any other clues for the moment. (But it is still a possibility that all of these folks are related to Isaac PILES from Orange Co NC. In 1800 (Orange CO NC), Isaac had two sons under 10 years. In 1820 (Smith Co TN), he had 5 sons under the age of 20 and 4 daughters under the age of 15, so the possibility exists.) Please keep me posted if you make any progress here. I've got ancestors who are lost in TN in this era as well. Jim Smee Pittsburgh PA

(If it were later, Rector would not be an orphan, but simply an adult whose parents had died). And since both parents must be dead (since he's an orphan), I think it is significant that only the mother is named. If his father were known, seems like he would have been mentioned in addition to, or instead of, the mother. >> In those days, a child was considered an orphan if his/her father was dead, even though the mother was still living. For instance, many organizations and schools were formed to provide for children who were "orphaned" by the Civil War -- the children were fatherless but not necessarily motherless. The will of Stephen Girard, financier, of Philadelphia, PA, established Girard College for orphan boys (the will was challenged a few decades ago to also include orphan girls) -- a requirement for admission was (and remains) that the child be fatherless (many still had mothers caring for them). 2. George, Sumner County records say: 1816: John PYLE_ to Sarah ALLEN 24 FEB 1816, David H. WHIPPLE and David CROCKET as bondsmen; 1823: Joshua PYLE_ to Nancy ALLEN 27 MAR 1823, John PYLE as bondsman; 1825: William PILE_ to Margaret ALLEN 16 JUN 1825, "Jeshu" PILE as bondsman. ["Jeshu" is likely "Joshua", but be "Jehu" or "John" as well.] Then in the 1830 Sumner Co census, John PYLE, Joshua PYLE, William PYLE, and a William ALLEN (age 50 to 60 years) live within one census page of one another. John seems to be gone (dead) by 1835. Joshua I don't know about beyond 1830. And you have told me that your William wound up in Christian Co KY by 1850. Jim Smee Pittsburgh PA

    2. One of the original heads of Sumner Co PILES families seems to have been Isaac PILES, who appears in neighboring Smith CO TN for the 1820 census, and in Sumner Co for the 1830 census. He was, I believe, the proven son Isaac who appears in James PILES' 1820 Orange Co NC will. Isaac was born c1775, which fits as a son of the Orange County NC James and as a father of some of the Sumner County lines. Trouble is, I get the feeling there were at least a couple of lines that crossed paths in Sumner County in this era. Some of them consistently used PILES and others seem to have been pretty consistent in using PYLE (including the three apparent PYLE siblings who married ALLEN girls and lived in pretty close proximity in Sumner Co in 1830, your William included. I've wondered if the PILES with the given name Isaac (at least two) and those with the given name Newton (several, including James Newton PILES who wound up in Franklin Co IL by the 1840s) might be related, as in Isaac NEWTON. 1. [PYLE] Mary PILES PELL, born 1829?
    2. In a message dated 8/25/00 9:41:12 AM Eastern Daylight Time, [email protected] writes: << I wanted to jump in on the MARY PYLES / PILES info as she is my 2X Great-grandmother. She was born 12 August 1829. Died 22 December 1881 of old age. Her parents were HUNTER PILES / PYLES & NANCY FORTNEY. Her death certificate is found in book 1858-1920 page 4 line 2. I have a copy if anyone would have need for it. She was married to FAIRFAX PELL and they had 6 children. >> Judy, This is news. I had Mary PILES married to Fairfax PELL, but thought she was born much earlier. Did you mean to say that she was born in 1829? Is there census information to support that? I would have to assume she married Fairfax PELL before 1850, since she does not appear in (her mother) Nancy FORTNEY PILES' Preston Co household in 1850. Does her 1881 death record actually state she is the daughter of Hunter and Nancy, or do you have other proof of that? Hope this isn't too many questions at once. I'd really just like to confirm the 1829 birth date. Thanks. Jim Smee Pittsburgh PA

    1. [PYLE] George M. Pyle-Henry Co. 1870 Census-Missouri
    2. Hi, All, In my research I have found a George M. Pyle in the 1870 Henry Co. Missouri Census. Does anyone out there have information on this man, or can do a census lookup for me? I am researching the Pyle/Pyles/Piles family in Henry Co. Mo. My GGGrandmother was Connie Jane Pyle/Pyles who was born in 1844, possibly in Oklahoma, and raised in Bates Co.and Henry Co. Missouri, she married William Bradford in Henry Co. in the 1860's. (She was also of Cherokee descent. I have some records that say that her father's name was William Pyle from North Carolina and her mother's name was Mary Elizabeth__________.) Any help appreciated! Sandra
