    2. >>>>>>>>>>>>Shirl wrote me to say: Just for what it's worth -- this morning I was thinking about the fact that no one knows where James Pyle, Sr. (died in Orange Co NC c1823) came from. Maybe we should be looking for the spelling POILES. Older family members made it clear that the name was always POILES and would always be POILES. This came from my Uncle John who was born 1886. His older sister, Luella b. 1880, echoed his claim. As I stated before, I have found documents with the name spelled POILES as far back as 1785. I found a Mary Poiles on a VA 1850 census (Bolevar Co) and I found a Robert Poiles who served during the Revolutionary War. What do you think? Shirl Hi Shirl, I've seen POILES on occasion, but always viewed as a "mistake". I remember seeing a Joshua POILES serving in a Revolutionary War militia unit from Frederick Co VA with Sgt. Joshua PYLES (later to become a lieutenant: The Romney List, or something like that, without looking). I figured they might have been father and son and someone had a system for keeping them separate. I'll be more open-minded about this from now on, and may need to give some census indices another look for this variant. Thank you. Jim Smee Pittsburgh PA

    2. My two cents: A hundred years from now, we're all going to be dead, and there ain't nobody who's going to have gotten rich by stealing other people's genealogical information. However, there will be countless people who will appreciate the wealth of information that has been collected, distributed, shared, analyzed, etc by we folks who share. Sure some of it is going to be wrong, but let's give these future generations some credit regarding their ability to sort through what is out there and make the most of it (and enjoy it and be fulfilled by it). I wish some thief three hundred years ago had stolen and recorded information regarding who the father of Francis PILES was. I'd pay a few shillings to know that now. Jim Smee Pittsburgh PA

    1. [PYLE] Zachariah PILES and Elizabeth JONES
    2. Hello Mary LaSHURE, Yes, I've owned a copy of the PYLE Book for about 12 years. It's an excellent reference, but I'm afraid there's very little information on the Hampshire Co VA PILES families, and some of what is there is wrong. It does not offer any insights regarding your Zachariah and Elizabeth JONES PILES. Do you have any clues as to where Zachariah and Elizabeth were for the 1860 and 1870 census? I'm curious about a 4 AUG 1874 marriage in Logan Co OH between Zachariah PILES and Elizabeth DEER. Logan sits near Miami Co, where your Zachariah PILES may have had some connections (i.e., son Benjamin living there in 1880). I thought this might be a second marriage for your Zachariah (with Arabel of the 1900 Henry Co IN census being the third). But when I found that Zachariah in 1880 Madison Co IN (borders Henry County), he was listed (both in the Soundex and in the actual census) as 38 years old (born VA, and the wife Elizabeth is 27, born OH). Your twin girls, Susannah and Sarah born 1863, are not in this household in 1880 (but I suppose they could have already left due to marriage.) There are a William (age 5 born OH) and a Minnie (age 1 born IN) in the household, so I believe this is the same Zachariah and Elizabeth who married in 1874. But unless there was a major census error, i.e., Zachariah actually being age 58, or something like that, I guess this is a different Zachariah (but likely somehow related due to the name, and the places of birth and residence). I suppose the census taker's original handwritten 58 might have been later transcribed as 38, but that's a stretch. I"d need some more evidence to start truly believing that. And of course the 1865 marriage record of John H. PILES (identified as a son of Zachariah and Elizabeth PILES) says he was a resident of Springfield, Clark Co OH in 1865 when he married Anna DAVIS. Clark County adjoins Miami County. Your Zachariah was presumably around there somewhere in 1860 and 1870, but does not seem to appear in the census indices, so we're stuck. Does any of this ring bells or make sense, relative to your search? I know this is a somewhat confusing posting, but it's a confusing line. Jim Smee Pittsburgh PA

    3. My father, who served in the So.West Pacific, was always asked whether he was kin to Ernie. The story in our family (which is from E. Tennessee) is that Ernie was a third cousin - whatever that means. There is an eerie resemblence between Ernie and members of our line. My dad recalled that Ernie often ticked off some of the troops in New Guinea and the Phillipines when he wrote how much more fortunate soldiers in the Pacific were than the troops freezing in France and Belgium. Pyle won them over before he died. My mother was wearing a black dress by chance on the day news reached the States that a Jap sniper had killed Ernie on Ie Shima. She walked into a bank in San Francisco to cash a check, which she endorsed Mrs. E. C. Pyle. There was much staring and whispering until she mentioned to the teller that her husband was a captain of engineers. Ernie's genealogy is a bit murky. As far as I know, he has never been connected with an English immigrant (such as the three brothers; Ralph, Nicholas and Robert). This (along with the tale told in my family and the resemblence - high forehead, long nose) has led me to believe that Ernie's family were originally German - Pfeil as opposed to Pyle or Pile. The Pyle book claims that Ernie's family denied any connection with hillbilly Pyle families in the South. Charles Pyle Richmond, VA

    3. Albert , I was 8 yrs. when Ernie Pyle died. How well I remember the 9 cents movies starring Hoppy, Gene and Roy. Couldn't miss a Betty Grable, Dan Dailey Musical Either. With my quarter I paid to see the movie, plus had enough money left to buy a box of popcorn, a candy bar, and a coke. Those were the days! Cordially, Billie

My Netscape browser came up with 3,479 web sites for "Ernie Pyle" Here's a very brief biography Ernest Taylor Pyle 1900-1945 Journalist; born near Dana, Ind. Leaving college to become a reporter for the La Porte (Ind.) Herald, he held various other jobs, including that of managing editor of the Washington (D.C.) News. In the late 1930s he devoted himself to reporting, especially as a correspondent in Latin America. During World War II he accompanied Allied forces in the invasions of North Africa, Italy, and Normandy, and reported from the front lines with personal stories of soldiers and their lives. 3. Listed below is where to get the Pyle book. But I don't think that there are any copies left. I think that my sister said that she got the last one. But you can try. I got mine about a month ago. It is a great book to have. Mrs. Jane Pyle 12999 N. Pennsylvania D-101 Carmel, IN 46032-5419 You can call the daughter, Sarah Bratton at 317.846.1844. I am fairly certain the price is $125.00 now. I have been told that it is also on microfilm at some LDS libraries and the book is in some public libraries too. Several of us on the list have the book and will do lookups etc. Betsy

    2. I was almost 13 years old when Ernie Pyle was killed in April 1945. All us kids saw him in the newsreels just before the Hop-A-Long Cassidy feature cowboy movie on Saturday afternoons. Movie tickets were $.09 for kids. We all knew about Ernie Pyle, the war correspondent--and that <as previously stated> he was the soldiers newsman. I also remember the great sadness that swept across the country when it was reported that he had been killed. Albert

    3. James; Well put and I coudn't agree more with you. especially about the Frances Pyle Line. I have found quite a bit of family resemblance to this line and the mistake made in this section of the Pyle/Pile book concerning Zachariah leads me to believe that I may be on the right track by researching this line. I will be touring the midwest in September looking for information. I will be stopping to stick my nose in here or there. Any ideas? However, it appears that they may all be tied together back in Wiltshire anyway. Thought I would put my two cents worth in too. Ron Pyle Angels Camp, Ca.
