    3. Thomas, you said your uncle John Howard Pyle had an opportunity to visit the site where Ernie Pyle was killed, and had a photo of that site. Where was it exactly? I have read a lot about Ernie Pyle and I have seen several sites mentioned. I posted a message where I said the site was Iwo Jimo and this is just west of Okinawa. I did not put the time but I had been told it was at 10:i5 a.m. on April 18, 1945. George -----Original Message----- From: Thomas A. 1. [PYLE] Something about nothing
    2. Years ago my husband & I did antiques shows. At on show in King of Prussia, Pa. the dealer next to us was named Pyle. They told us they were the people who gave Gomer Pyle his name on the Andy Griffin Show. They named him Pyle after the family name, they were related to Ernie Pyle also, and Gomer as a joke because of the part he played. As someone not to bright. I think they knew the writer of the show. 3. I too have been watching this list but haven't written or offered my search. I am just beginning and don't really know who I am looking for at this point. My ggrandmother was Phoebe Pyle, she married Robert Dodds. For as long as I am aware they lived in Venango County PA. My father does not even know his Grandfather Pyle's first name or anything about the family. Is anyone out there reaching any Pyles from this part of the country? 3. Larry, I don't think there are any more of the Pyle Books for sale. Would you please check something in your book for me? Does it have a William Pyle, born about 1805 in North Carolina, married Margaret Allen in Sumner County Tennessee in 1825. Had 3 sons and one daughter. If so, does it have his parents listed. I would very much appreciate this, since I am stuck at this point in searching my family roots. 3. Dear Thomas Pyle, Oh how much I hope you are right about your relationship to Ernie. I am a second cousin twice removed from Ernie through William Pyle and Mary Mack. I can trace John through Robert Pyle I in the Pyle/Pile book. Were you able to find any documentation through your immediate family? I have been able to follow Ernie from Robert Pyle and Martha Malone down to present. Here is what I have found on John Howard Pyle. isn't it a coincidence that they both finished the war at Ie Shima. John Howard Pyle John Howard Pyle moved from the obscurity of a Phoenix radio station to serve two terms as the Governor of Arizona and also served as President of the National Safety Council from 1959 to 1974. Million's of driver's graduated from the Safety Council's Defensive Driving Course that was John's brainchild. His domestic driver improvement program is taught in nine countries He won national recognition with a stirring address "What is Right for America" during the 1952 GOP national convention and his voice is familiar to millions following 21-year career in radio. He performed Easter sunrise services at the Grand Canyon for 25 years and was the voice for all United States Armed Force Networks when the Second World War came to an end. When the Japanese surrender party arrived at Ie Shima, John covered the surrender ceremonies on board the U.S.S. Missouri and was the first radio reporter to arrive with the U. S. Armed Forces on Japan's mainland. John also narrated the triumphant return of General Jonathan Wainwright to the United States following his imprisonment by the Japanese. John was drafted as a Republican candidate for governor of the state of Arizona in 1950 and despite a history of Democratic control, he easily won the election and was re-elected two years later. President Eisenhower asked him to join his staff in Washington in 1955 and appointed him as to the Deputy Assistant to the President for Federal-State relations. John served on many boards and agencies and was on the Board of Trustees for Redlands University in California and the Arizona Board of Regents. Since his retirement he has written a daily column for the "Tempe Daily News." John Pyle, safety council president, radio personality and advisor to presidents was still alive in 1994. John Howard Pyle was the voice of America in Ie Shima at the close of the Second World War. ----- Original Message ----- From: Thomas A. 3. Here is an off the wall question that genealogists who are more experienced than I might be able to help me with (I hope). Basically, I want to know how to list people who are know by another name other than their legal names. My two cases in point: My father, JAMES ASHMAN XXXX, always told me his middle name was his mothers maiden as was the custom in his era. This year I found his birth certificate only to find out he was named JAMES HENRY XXX. I'm sure he didn't realize this since his naturalization papers, marriage license, and death certificate all have JAMES ASHMAN XXXX. For all intent and purposes, he IS James ASHMAN xxxx. But....do I list him as James HENRY since that is his legal name??? Case #2 is my mother. Her birth certificate says GWENDOLYN MARIE XXXX. She went my MARIE all her life because her mother 'liked Marie better than Gwendolyn'. A note of interest is that 5 of the 10 children went by their middle names! My mother also didn't realize what her legal name was so she married and had many legal documents with the name MARIE GWENDOLYN XXXX on them. She also named me Gwendolyn Marie, thinking it was the reverse of her name so to make a long story short(er) she had her name changed legally. Again, what name should I use for genealogical purposes?? Birth certificate name or legally changed name? What's ironic is that on the marriage license of my mother and father, neither one have their "legal" name on it.... are they legally married? ;-) Looking forward to your responses! Gwen

    3. I think I have one like that. My Aunt Flo unbeknownst to me always called herself Norva. She died and I looked her up on the SSDI and couldn't find her. (Actually I have a very elusive PYLE family. No one on this list or on any place on the Internet have they been connected.) Anyway, to make a long story shorter, I contacted everyone email I could who had the same last name of the only cousin I knew of, and I found her. She told me her mother went by Norva and when I went back to the SSDI, there it was. Completely wrong name. It's Florence on her birth cert. Norva shows up no where except on the SSDI. Can you imagine. No wonder my Pyles are so very invisible.
