To everyone: Thanks for the info on Coonrod I really appreciate it. I would be so glad if I could find the parents of Coonrod. Where can you get the Pyle book? Thanks again, I am always interested in any info on this family. ~Helen~ Owensboro, Kentucky [email protected]
Nothing about Conrad's parents-- the best educated opinion I have heard (from Tom Pyle) is that Conrad (Conrad, Konradt, Conradt, Conradus) Piel (Peihl, Pfeil, Peil, Pile, Poile, Poyle, et al) was German and fought with the British as did other Hessians or German mercenaries. A Conrad Piel is listed as a Hessian prisoner in NY in 1782 (MUSTER ROLLS AND PRISONER-OF-WAR LISTS BY CLIFFORD SMITH, and thought to be a drummer because of his age (and a notation). He is also shown in Family Treemakers “Passenger Lists between 1538 and 1940.” (Tom Pyle's research). Americans did everything, including offering land to get them to desert the English. Prevailing wisdom for the losers was to become English (Poyle?) and blend in and go along with the winners. Part of the reason for coming over here was to stay for a better lot in life. Conrad could have moved down to North Carolina with his family (Brothers Richard and Peter?), and finally to Tennessee where things get much clearer. -----Original Message----- From: Helen [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: Sunday, September 03, 2000 2:09 AM To: [email protected] Subject: [PYLE] Re: Coonrod Pyle Stephen Do you have any info or assumptions as to Coonrod's parents? ~Helen~ Owensboro, Kentucky [email protected] ==== PYLE Mailing List ==== To unsubscribe, write [email protected] with just the word unsubscribe in the message area. Jim, I have put J J Poill's death certificate and marriage certificates on my website at http://www.thorntongale.org/Genealogy/J_J_Poill/J_J_Poill.htm. His death certificate says he was 102 years old at the time of death. I've never believed this since it doesn't track with the earlier ages he gave in the census. The photo is from many years before his death. The first census J. J. Poill shows up in is the 1880 census where he stated he was 42 years old (i.e., born 1837-8). His age in the 1900 census is 67 years old (born in 1832-3). His age in the 1905 military census was 77 years old (born 1827-8). His age in the 1910 census is 83 years old (born 1826-7) and in the 1920 census he was 93 years old (born 1826-7) I'm really glad you (especially) are interested in this case - I have admired your posts greatly especially those concerning Nicholaus Pyle and Mary Ann Westbrook. Best regards, Thornton Gale Thornton, Have you found a 1928 State of Oregon death certificate for Jackson POILE, and if so, how old does it say he was? And who were his parents in that record? I'm a little suspicious of a 97 year old who looks like a 67 year old. And I'm a little suspicious regarding the claim that Jackson was born in 1827 (age 97 in 1924), the third of four children, when his parents(?) were married in 1831. Fascinating story. Still thinking. Jim Smee
Doris, Actually I think "Uncle John" is really John Westbrook who I think (but haven't proven) is the brother of Mary Ann Westbrook. It is a John Westbrook who is the witness to the infamous transfer of property that Nicholas made to his son Everett - see http://www.thorntongale.org/Genealogy/Nicholas_Pyle/Nicholas_Pyle_Aug_ 21_1832.htm My interpretation of this facinating document is that it is sort of a traveling "trousseau" rather than the contemporary interpretation that it was an attempt on the part of Nicholas Pyle to hide his assets from his creditors - I never bought that one anyway because I don't think such a maneuveur would fly in the court system of the day and especially with the hardened frontier people. It seems that the items are those needed for John Westbrook to take Everett Pyle on a journey. Hope this helps. Thornton Gale Mr Thornton: You indicated that your JJ Poile was son of Nicholas Pyle and Mary Westbrook...I won't argue with you there (but would like more proof), but the "Uncle John" referred to in the story was certainly not John Pyle, 1796-1869, who was a brother to this Nicholas and was my gg grandfather. He was in Montgomery County, Texas by the mid 1830's - 1835 to be exact and he is too well documented to have been the "rover and adventurer" described. He was never in Ill, Ark or Tenn. And there's no evidence that a nephew, Jonathon Jackson Poiles came to Texas with him. He did, however, have a SON, Jonathon Jackson Pyle, born 1836 (my great grandfather) who married Amanda McLennon in Conroe, Montgomery Co., Tex. in 1856 and never ventured any further than moving to Kaufman County about 1859 and lived there until he died in 1920. I just wanted to clear this up on the list as there are many of this branch of the family who are online here and know of the well documented history behind our family. I personally think you have the wrong man. Doris in west Texas
Folks: I was extremely excited to see the recent round of messages concerning Coonrod Poiles (Pyle). My G-Grandfather was Jonathan Jackson Poill. I have been trying to find his ancestry for 10 years now. I have a fairly good case for him being the child of Mary Ann Westbrook and Nicholas Pyle. Since my G-Grandfather couldn't read or write I always thought he may not have been able to spell Pyle correctly and since he was from the South would pronounce his name to officials such as census takers, etc. and one of them spelled it phonetically as "Poill" which became his offical name. But now I have this wonderful new information that some Pyles spelled their name's as Poile, Poiles, or Poyle. I have put together my evidence at my website http://www.thorntongale.org/Genealogy/J_J_Poill/J_J_Poill.htm. This is a work in progress and I have incorporated the great information from Carolyn Fulmer and Jim Smee. I would be very interested in any information anyone has to offer. Thornton Gale

William "Grady" Pile, b. 3-12-1810 in Fentress Co. m. (1) Narcissus Sabien (2) Mary Williams The Pyle Book has an intersting article on him. It quotes some of the book "Sergeant York and His People" by Sam K. Cowan. It tells of Fentress County becoming a 'no man's land' during the Civil War subjected to marauding bands from the North and from the South, a land for plunder and revenge. The county was on the military border between the free and slaveholding states. Coonrod had been a slaveholder, but very few of the mountianeers were slave owners. Those with sympathies for the south went with those forces and those with northern syumpathies went with the northern forces. The men who remained home were compelled by public sentiment to take sides. The raiding of passing soldiers was the excuse for organized raids on both sides. Two of Conrad Pile's grandsons were killed during this period, Conrod Jr. or Rod as he was called and Jeff, both sons of Elijah. Rod sympathized with the north and Jeff with the south. Sgt. Alvin York of WW II fame came from Elijah's line through daughter Nancy who married William Brooks and their daughter Mary Elizabeth who married William York. One reason this part of Coonrod's history interested me is that my husband's grandfather, Pleasant Howard, lived in Fentress County during this time period and served in the CSA and was killed by one of the "passing bands of mauraders" only a few days after he had returned home from his service. During my research on my husband's Howard, Wright and Price families there I have seen Coonrod's name spelled POILES and I had dismissed it as a typo. Doris

Helen and others Give me a couple of days to organize my files, and I will post to the list. I am working on my Easton genealogy this weekend. Did you all know that there is a Pyles Reunion the second Sunday in September at the John Adair School in Columbia, Kentucky. This reunion is in honor of the late J. B. Pyles, a descendant of Coonrod Pyles, the famous long hunter. This is posted in the September edition of Kentucky Explorer. For information contact Aaron Pylkes, 108 Southside Avenue, Campbellsville, KY 42718 or call 502-465-7469. I hope it is OK to have posted this at this website. Thought those of you related to this line might want to attend. Frank--On pgs. 200/201 of the Pyle book you sent me it is interesting to note that Thomas Piles b.1787 had at least nine children with last (Kelso) b.1858 or when Thomas was 71 years of age. Richard
I have seen information that strongly suggests "Coonrod Pile" was in fact Conrad Pfeil. Other evidence suggests that the first "Coonrod" hailed from the same village in Hesse as Daniel Pfeil (Pile) and that the Pile families of Fentress and Sullivan counties are kin. Charles Pyle Richmond, VA
