He was born on August 1, 1838, in Upper Black Eddy, Bucks County, Pennsylvania, the son of Jacob Pursell and Anna Catherine Shaver. He was the widower of Sarah Sigafoos Pursell who died in 1906, in Pittston, Luzerne County, PA. He was a veteran of the Civil War enlisting on April 19, 1861, at Mauch Chunk, PA. He was awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor for gallantry at the Battle of Fair Oaks. He was survived by two sons, John S. Pursell and Earl R. Pursell; and two daughters, Mrs. Kate Fulmer and Miss Agnes Pursell. Burial on May 16, 1918, at White Haven Cemetery, White Haven, PA Note: Hiram's obituary was published in the Thursday, May 16, 1918, edition of the Wilkes Barre Record, pg. 16.
