He was born on August 15, 1820, in Bucks County, Pennsylvania, the son of Dennis Pursell and Sarah Seaman. Both parents were also natives of Bucks County, PA. He was a retired farmer and the widower of Sarah E. Harding Pursell who died in 1891. Burial on August 19, 1907, at Pine Grove Cemetery, Berwick, Columbia County, PA.
