SGS Computer IG abt "Using Ancestry.com" on 2/9/2002 The February 9th, 2002 meeting of the Seattle Genealogical Society Computer Interest Group features a return of Kathy Turner, Assistant Manager of Adult/Teen Services at the Sno-Isle Library System, to demonstrate how to use the Ancestry.com and MyFamily.com Web sites in your genealogy research. She will also briefly introduce us to the ProQuest "Genealogy & Local History Online" database which has recently become available remotely through both the Sno-Isle and the Seattle Public Library Systems' Web sites. Kathy drew a large audience last fall, so come early for this valuable demonstration. It may be "standing room only"! She provided us with the following summary of her talk: "Ancestry Plus" is only available inside our libraries. "Ancestry.com," of course, is still available from home. I plan to demonstrate the two Ancestry databases, emphasizing the differences and the similarities. I will also try to answer questions on things that perplex users about Ancestry.com, even though we are no longer using it at the library. Finally, I will show off our latest database, "Genealogy & Local History Online." The Ancestry databases and "Genealogy & Local History Online" are different and complementary in many ways. The latter is a collection of 25,000 digitized surname family histories and primary source records. Ultimately it will also contain Heritage Quest census images, at which time the database name will change to "Heritage Quest Online." From "Genealogy & Local History Online" you can print out parts of a book or even the entire book itself! You can also search using names, names of places, or by publication title, etc. I will talk about some of the best ways to get good results out of this database and also how to print from it, things that aren't written in the vendor's Help documentation. MEETING LOCATION at the SGS OFFICE and LIBRARY We will meet Saturday, February 9th, from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the office and library of the Seattle Genealogical Society.
