    1. SGS CIG abt "Using the UW Catalog" on Saturday, 1 May 04
    2. May's Seattle Genealogical Society Computer Interest Group program will be "Genealogical Research Using the UW Libraries Catalog". This is a field trip to the UW Suzzallo/Allen Library. Our host and speaker is Theresa Mudrock, UW History Librarian. We will meet on Saturday, May 1st, from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. in the Allen Auditorium (see directions below). Ms. Mudrock will introduce us to using the UW Libraries Catalog and the other UW Libraries databases for genealogical research. Some of the areas to research there include local subjects for US States, Canadian Provinces, and other foreign countries (particularly European), such as: church history, emigration and immigration, gazetteers, local history, maps, registers, people, places and names, and military. We will also want to learn how the collection is organized, including their use of both the older Dewey Decimal and the newer Library of Congress catalog numbering systems. Two interesting databases are (1) Early English Books Online (a digitized collection of books published between 1470 and 1700) and (2) the Evans Digital Edition (of American imprints between 1639 and 1800). Theresa says that "Using these two databases one can find a 1785 city directory for Philadelphia, a list of prisoners of the Fleet in 1653, and a 1652 cure for swearing"! She will also show us how to use "American History and Life" to identify useful articles published in state historical society journals. DIRECTIONS: Parking is free in the UW Central Plaza Garage after noon on Saturdays. The Garage main entrance is at 15th Avenue NE and NE 41st Street. Proceed all the way back to the "C1 Permit Parking" area. The stairs up to Suzzallo Library are on the right. At the ground level, the Library entrance is to the East. Our meeting is in the Allen Auditorium, on the ground floor of the Allen Library North (located straight down the long corridor through Suzzallo). The Auditorium is behind the circular Information-Checkout Desk in the lobby.
