Hi Blaine, I have found numerous entries for this family in 1900-1920 census records of Washington, California, Texas, and Arkansas. James Gaches (b. June 1843 England) is found in La Conner, Skagit County, Washington in 1900, and died before 1910. He was married about 1876, after arriving in the US in 1872. He was a merchant and a naturalized citizen. With him in 1900 was his wife Rhoda (b. July 1849 England) who arrived in the US in 1870 and was the mother of 4 children. 2 of these children were still with the parents, George H. (b. March 1880 Washington) and Charles E. (b. Nov. 1882 Washington). Nearby was brother George Gaches (b. June 1846 England) and his family of 5. James & Rhoda's daughter Eva Florence (b. Nov. 1874 Washington) is found in 1900 in Oakland, California, living as a boarder in the household of Daniel S. Richardson (24 years older than she). From the next two enumerations, we find that when his wife died shortly afterwards he remarried to Eva and became the Japanese Consul in San Francisco. In Texas and Arkansas we find a large family descended from John H. Gaches, who appears to be another brother of James & George. I have quite a bit more detail on all these families (1900, 1910, & 1920) if you would like to contact me.
