The SQUIRES NEWSLETTER, Published each January arrived, so I wrote to the Editor/Friend/Cousin Stanley C. Squires who lives in Danbury, NC. I wrote back to him and asked his permission to use items out of the NEWSLETTER, and he promptly gave his hardy permission. If you or anyone you may know has the surname Squier, Squire, Squires then you might light to know more about this Family. My Grt Grt GF Jason Squire Clark name aroused my curiosity back in 1983 when I began my gen. searching. It resulted in my finding that the Squire was a very favored branch of the family whose surname was Squire. I was able to find only say 3 relatives by that surname but found little else. Fairly recently, I found an ancestral cousin in Everett - next door to me- that had found considerable more Squire info than I had found. So, I am off and running for more. I blindly tried the surname Squire by SQUIRE-D-request@rootsweb.com and it worked. Suddenly I was deluged with Squires + variants and I have much to do to sift it all. It is there that I met Stan the Editor and one of several gurus on Squire gen. None of this may apply to your screen, but I would like to pry the bark a bit for those who just might be interested in this surname. For one thing, years ago I found that one of our Washington Territorial governors & senators was Watson Carvosso Squire. At the time I wondered if he could be an ancestor of kin of some kind. I still don't know that as I need to do the research. I mentioned this to Editor Stan, and he informed me that he had written an article on the governor/senator in the 1994 Squires Newsletter. Apparently, I need to get a copy of that from Stan, and learn more about our early State governor/senator. I have some info on him, but I want more - like all gens. The Squires Newsletter has 12 pp. of highly interesting info I found. Not skimpy. I get the Lathrop/Lothropp Foundation Newletter but it is not as meaty so far as this one. Yet, the Lathrop Line is fabulous and worthy of more - it is fairly new and will probably include more in time. The former, apparently has been around for awhile. Items of interest I found were Internet - QUOTED - The most interesting and lucrative advancements in genealogy in the United States have been on the internet. More and more information is available on your computer than etc..... The one that is the greatest search engine is "dogpile." That name sound funny but it will work very hard for you. The full address is http:www.dogpile.com This multi-search engine will look at many search engines very quickly and reports the findings within twenty seconds. Try "Squires genealogy" or just "genealogy." Much of the information on the internet is given without a source and you have no idea if it is valid or not. I downloaded 80 pages of Squires genealogy that had reference numbers from 1 to 3739 only to find that most of these numbers lead to nothing. The few that did site a source were not supported by that source. Much of the information on the internet is unsupported. Then, OHIO SQUIRES IN THE CIVIL WAR is listed by each variant spelling + given name, birthdate, Regt. Company followed by And of these the following died during the War: & lists 9 Squires who died and one Lieut. who was captured 1865, held in prison. The Last True Daughter of the American Revolution was a Squire! is another article. Jane Squire Deane died in 1929. Quite a story about her and her gen. Another item section- PRIMARY SOURCES discussion + list of pri sources. A letter written at Camp Curtin Oct 20 1862 from Wm. N. Squire to his sister. A copy of Bible Records out of PA mgs. births, deaths. The Editors section states that this is the 12th issue of the Newsletter. The Newletter was submitted to the National Gen Soc. for its '97 Gen Newletter Competition. This one did not win, but the judges "cautioned against acceptance of secondary sources ' "Just because it is in print, doesn't make it so." Nobody would argue with that but sometimes that is the only thing readily available, Stan writes. He further stated that Just remember everything you read in this newsletter is a secondary source to you. The near last two pp. were given to a gen. of Charles and Lois Squires by Leroy Smithson of Huntington Beach CA who researched the family. The final page is devoted to QUERIES: A meaty newletter for those interested in the surname. Cost? A suggested $4. to offset postage, print'g, and copyright costs. NEW EMAIL ADDRESS: RUASquires@aol.com SQUIRES NEWLETTER Stanley C. Squires, Editor 2753 Highway 89 West Danbury, NC 27016-7330 All this may be for naught, but if it happens to pique the interest of a single person, then I will not have wasted the time and space.
