THANK YOU (I think! <grin>) Diane Hettrick for forwarding or passing on (Oh, oh!) the information re the U of IN perspective on "Diggings". This is Pathetic, to say the least. I LOVE SCIENCE, the Study and Exploration of things - for many reasons. Just as History tells us things, Science goes hand-in-hand with History to TELL US MORE, and hopefully more accurately over Time. I can see the value of studying remains, and forensics of archeological items, and I value the processes that are used, and will be used, BUT - exhumation of remains of public, or private cemeteries, WITHOUT the permission and agreement with all concerned - ancesters included, my opinion of that practice is a form of desecration, invasion, and wrong that I do not uphold, or approve. As I read the various comments - I reflected on the fact that I had ancestry who came to Indiana, Ohio, Illinois, probably by way of Kentucky early in the westerward movement and frontier. There were deaths in these families, and they were buried there. Shelbyville, reminded me of Shelby county in IN where my direct anc. came from. Their burials should have been honored as their permanent resting places, and not to be exhumed for scientific research w/o permission to do so. Or are the laws, rules, etc. "interpreted" or "bent" in such a way as to form a "path" for people or institutions to do what they "want". If this is what the whole thing is "boiling down to" - then, WHY HAVE CEMETERIES!? Is a cemetery, a temporary resting place for the remains of humans who pioneered and made this country- have they left no Legacy, except in printed words, no monument, or marker to their existence- or are these places waiting for the SHOVEL OF TIME to discard their remains, or to be exhumed for scientific reasons. PERMISSION to do these things are just bandied about, shoved under the carpet, behind closed doors. WHERE DOES ALL THIS END? THIS BEHIND THE DOORS SYNDROME? It appears that the MORE we Know, the MORE we Find Out we DON'T KNOW! IS THIS THE RATIONALE FOR EXHUMATION ? Carroll in Snohomish Loves Science, BUT. . . . . . .! Thanks, Diane, you are a gem- well polished and reflects beautifully! <BG!> <><><><30><><><> ___________________________________________________________________ You don't need to buy Internet access to use free Internet e-mail.
