    1. bygdeboks in Puget Sound libraries [Was:Re: Questions]

    3. Doris: Janet Baccus has given you some good information. The Tacoma society's 1980 publications are now 19 years old, and, of course, the libraries in question may have added additional bygdeboks. The 1980 publications did not include the very important books on personal names at Suzzallo. The biggest gap in those 1980 publications from our present-day perspective is that the collection of bygdeboks at the Nordic Heritage Museum in Ballard did not exist in 1980. If one had to rank the collections with the most bygdeboks, it would probably be the Museum, then Pacific Lutheran University. The Museum's collection may not be readily usable/available, and thus a visit should be preceded by a phone call. Some of these Puget Sound Area libraries have their catalogs on the web these days. The other thing to determine before setting off on a wild-goose chase, is whether a bygdebok was ever published for your parish. Many communities in Norway still do not have these farm chronicles. Some communities have what may be called bygdebøker but are really histories, not the genealogies of the farm owner families that genealogists expect. If you can come up with the full bibliographic info (including ISBN number if possible) on a bygdebok for this parish, you could ask your local librarian to try to obtain it on interlibrary loan. Check the Univ No Dak library online for possibilities: http://www.und.nodak.edu/dept/library/Collections/bygdebok.html See the Norway GenWeb sites for lists of bygdebøker: http://www.rootsweb.com/%7Ewgnorway/index.html Although the Swedes have not made a usual practice of publishing bygedeboks, there is one for a Swedish community (on an island near Norway) at Seattle Genealogical Society. I bought it at Shorey's antiquarian book store in Seattle and gave it to the society. --Ida On Sat, 13 Feb 1999 09:16:56 Doris Watson <dwatson@oz.net> wrote: <snip>2. Is there anywhere in the greater Puget Sound area that has a collection of Bygdeboks from Norway? I'm specifically looking for Finnøy parish. <snip>
