Olympia,Thurston County, Washington Territory September 2, 1871, Saturday The Weekly Pacific Tribune ANOTHER MURDER IN PIERCE CO. The adjoining county of Pierce continues to maintain its character for lawlessness and murder. To the credit of the new comers, however, it must be said that this character is confined to the old settlers. We have now to chronicle another bloody affair, the particulars of which we learned yesterday, on our visit to that county. On Saturday evening last the body of James CAWLEY was found in his back yard, about four miles from Steilacoom, riddled with buckshot. When found, life had been for some time extinct. The Coroner (Mr. PINENS) was immediately summoned, a jury empaneled and a post mortem examination held, and a verdict of murder found, all before midnight. The inquisition elicited the fact that R. W. WALKER, who owned and occupied the farm adjoining CAWLEY's, was a bitter enemy of the latter, and had made threats against his life. On this testimony he was taken in custody, and now awaits trial at the next term of the District Court. It is about time Pierce County turned over a new leaf.
