Hi Greg, I have apologized to the list owner and the list members once already for making the mistake of which Rootsweb mailing list/message board that the original query had been posted. Also, I apologized if my posts were inappropriate for this list. I am apologizing to you for making you uneasy with this type of search. However, I don't totally agree with you on your opinion of what most people want or don't want. I agree that many don't want to be found but I have found throughout my research in this that many do want to be found. Many birth mothers have contacted the adoption agency that handled the adoption and requested that if their birth child ever came searching to please forward any contact information. Many birth mothers/fathers register at adoption sites in search of their birth children. There have been many happy reunions this way. Also, circumstances are different for each situation. From the Non-Identifying information Wendy received, it is obvious that her birth mother had no other choice at the time. Certain circumstances is what forced her to give up her child. She made sure that Wendy had a name before giving her up and so she named her Kimberly. Again, from the information received, Barbara contacted the agency many times prior to the adoption to check on her daughter. Kimberly/Wendy even had a visit at her mother's home before leaving with her new family to her new home across the mountains. As for the mediator, I mentioned in an earlier message that I am going to mediate on the behalf of this family, and ONLY if it is agreeable by Wendy's birth family. A person does not have to be a CI to mediate in these situations. As for my opinion of inappropriate use of my research skills.......if anything, my research skills have changed and grown since I began helping Wendy with this type of research. I see nothing negative in any of it. Actually, I have come to the conclusion that I am going to continue on with this type of research. As soon as I am finished with this one, I will volunteer as soon as I see another query asking for help. I have enjoyed every moment that I have given Wendy throughout this and hope one day to be rewarded by a reunion between Wendy and her birth family. Hi Paddy, Thanks for the advice. I don't have a subscription, but was using the Classmates.com site and at least getting names. I have looked those up that I could find and have called a number of people. I even have the co-ordinator for all years reunions from one school district helping me out. :) I had been planning on visiting the Reunion.com site also, but have been doing so well with Classmates that I decided to stay with them for now. Hi Bob, Wendy has received her Non-Identifying information from the Children's Home Service's for a fee of $150.00. To obtain further information, I think the fee is $500.00. Wendy will go through a Confidential Intermediary if necessary, however, she is on a limited budget and is trying to do this on her own first. I offered to help her since she is not in the area, thinking I would do my genealogy research along with the time I spent helping her. As it turns out, I have put my own research on hold for the moment and have applied all my time to helping her in her search for her birth mother and sisters. As for having an intermediary if/when her birth mother is found, it has been discussed that I would be the intermediary on their behalf. Thanks for responding and sharing. All help is appreciated. Dave, Has Wendy tried the services of a Confidential Intermediator to review her adoption records and local her birth mother? Revised Code of Washington, Title 26, Chapter 26.33 covers adoptions. Of particular interest are: Section 26.33.340: Department, agency, and court files confidential -- Limited disclosure of information. Section 26.33.343: Search for birth parent or adopted child -- Confidential intermediator. Section 26.33.345: Search for birth parent or adopted child -- Limited release of information -- Noncertified copies of original birth certificate. Section 26.33.347: Consent or refusal to release adoptee's identifying information -- Desire to be contacted -- Certified statement. Access is improving for more recently adopted individuals. RCW 26.33.345 subsection (3) states: "For adoptions finalized after October 1, 1993, the department of health shall make available a noncertified copy of the original birth certificate to the adoptee after the adoptee's eighteenth birthday unless the birth parent has filed an affidavit of nondisclosure." It appears that because of the implied guarantee of privacy for the birth parents, adoptions finalized before October 1, 1993, must go to the courts and Certified Intermediators for access to records and contact between birth parents and adopted children. I am not a lawyer, so this is a layman's view of what the RCW says. Check with your county's Clerk of the Court to find out how to contact the local Confidential Intermediator. Bob Witherspoon
Is anyone else uneasy about assisting in searches for biological parents? I understand a person's desire to know where they came from, but in many cases these people do not want to be found. I know there are mediators involved, but ONLY if both parties adheres to the process. Seems an inappropriate use of our research skills. Greg
I tried the birth certificate route and got the changed/adopted record ~ ~ not the original at all. Fortunately the actual birth records were in our family already but for people wanting an actual original ~ are you really able to get them now? Also I am sure there is still a charge for an Intermediary ~ there was one we were were looking for our siblings. Hi all, Thanks to all for responding. Here is what is going on and what I am looking for: A few months back there was a post to the list by an individual that was adopted and in search of information and help in finding her birth mother. I responded and have been helping out doing some foot work, since she lives in Eastern Washington. She was born on 12-31-64 at Good Samaritan Hospital in Puyallup and given the name "Kimberly" at birth. She was delivered by Dr. John Kanda at 4:17 am. She weighed 7 pounds, 1 ounce and was 20 inches long. She had straight medium brown hair and deep blue eyes. On or about 2-4-65, Kimberly was adopted and taken to Yakima, Washington. She was then named "Wendy". Wendy has received the Non-Identifying Information from the Children's Home Society and the information followed all that Wendy had been told over the years. Her mother's name was Barbara and she was 21 at the time of Wendy's birth. Wendy has three half sisters that would have been 4, 3 and 2 years old when Wendy was born. Barbara was 5'4" in height and weighed about 120 pounds. She had reddish brown wavy hair, brown eyes and a freckled complexion. She had completed the 10th grade and started 11th grade before dropping out of school. I am assuming this is due to possible marriage and first pregnancy. During her freshman and sophmore years, Barbara was a "Majorette" and she also twirled the baton for 8 years, later teaching to others. Barbara received awards for broad jumping, was on the basketball team and also played left field in baseball. She was also involved with the 4-H Club. Barbara was separated from her husband when Wendy was conceived. She worked as a waitress and also as a "Change Girl" in an entertainment business. According to the information we have, Barbara's husband was in the military. (Also, Wendy's father was to have been in the military as well). Barbara had a sister that would have been about 6 years older and also a brother that would have been about 4 years older. The sister was to have been married to a miner and the brother was also involved with mining. He was about 6' tall and had black curly hair. He was to have had an IQ of 120. Barbara and brother both were artistic and enjoyed painting. Brother was also in the military. Wendy was told that her mother was re-doing the inside of her fathers airplane at some time during her pregnancy with Wendy. We have now learned that her father was part owner with some other men of this airplane. The plane was kept at Thun Field. So, since Wendy was born at Good Samaritan Hospital and had ties with Thun Field, I am assuming the family was in the Puyallup area. However, I went to the Tacoma Library's Northwest Room and they have Puyallup Viking yearbooks from I believe the late 40's through ??? Anyways, I went through all yearbooks searching for any and all Barbara's during the years she would have been in high school. I have some good leads at this time, but nothing has paid off as of yet. However, I don't know if she went to Puyallup High School. That is why I asked if anyone knew of any other High Schools in the area so I could try to find yearbooks for them as well. I have considered that the family could have been in Sumner, Edgewood, Orting, Graham, Kapowison, Eatonville, or ??? One reason for thinking the family was near Good Samaritan Hospital is because Barbara was supposed to have gone into false labor a couple of days before Wendy's birth. She had been to the hospital more than once for this and it was then determined that she would wait until her contractions were more regular and closer together before returning to the hospital. She waited until contractions were 2 minutes apart. As it turned out, a nurse delivered Wendy and Dr. Kanda arrived, he finished up. If this story sounds familiar to anyone please contact me. Wendy wants to find her family. She wants to get the chance to know and love them. If found through my help, I hope to be the intermediary person that makes the original contact to see if the family would be willing to meet her. Again, thanks to all for responding and the help you have given me. Sorry people if you look in the Libraries of the High School they have old year books you can copy. As the Librarian after school hours but not to late to got to the storage area. I had great results looking for the Principal Harry Hansen and other staff. You can't buy a copy of the year book but you sure can use the copy machine for a small fee. As I recall it cost at the most only a quarter for a copy.

Hello List Finding yearbooks isn't impossible... but it can be difficult. The yearbook publishers usually don't keep any extra books after a few years and neither do the schools. The Best time to look for a yearbook is within the first year or so... Contacting the PTSA member who handled the sale to see if someone failed to pick up an ordered book. The next Best time to look for a book is 50-70 years after graduations... as the kids throw out the "junk"... The best place to find a yearbook is online or in a local thrift store. Reunion people are wonderful. Reunion people have yearbooks and current addresses. Reunion people like to remember other people. Contact the school and ask for the reunion person for the 1962 40th reunion back in 2002. or ask if someone is doing a 45th reu! nion for 1958. 15 years ago it was a rare Public Library that had copies of yearbooks... I got a copy of her death certificate but all it gave was her birth and death dates, which I already had, it listed her mother as "unknown" and her father as just "Boone". There are very few members of this side of my family left, only 2.
