I must have missed something in this list. A quick glance at the previous messages didn't tell me where the Home Undertaking records are now -- although I think I read it originally. Can someone refresh my memory? Thanks. The genealogy or evolution of local funeral homes and records might be a worthwhile resource guide for posting on the USGenWeb site for each county or on the Washington State Gen Soc website. Bob Witherspoon
Purdy & Walters is part of the same outfit as Bleitz. I'll have to double check on those records, it would be great if we are talking about the same ol' place. Or the Ol' Same Place! One of the funeral directors at Bleitz gave me the information that I posted about Collins going to Home Undertaking. All of these acquisitions, (sigh) isn't this fun? So Monday, I'll put on my Deerstalker and find out what's what! Cynthia
This is starting to sound like a broken record but...Collins FH was taken over by Home Undertaking and well, we know where those records are now! Cynthia
This is what I was told about Collins Funeral Home: Was on Harvard Ave., in Seattle, went out of business late 1940s. George Geriad? in Everett got the records, then they went to Cassidy and then Purdy: Purdy & Walters with Cassidy Funeral Home 1702 Pacific Avenue Everett, WA 98201 (425) 252-2191 As to the fee Evergreen-Washelli charges for looking up records, it is the only funeral home I have run into so far who has asked for any money. It was explained to me that the reason might be that they keep the old records in a separate building and, apparently, it's more of a problem to look them up as opposed to having the records in the same building. I have gotten quite a few records from various funeral homes for my own research and even asked for some for a man in Sweden and every funeral home I asked sent what they had. I always enclose an SASE for their response. Gloria Lester >>^. .^<< ________________________________________________________________ The best thing to hit the internet in years - Juno SpeedBand! The June 4th issue of the Seattle Post-Intelligencer (p. B1) has an interesting article: "Nameless faces from out of the past: Mysterious cache of decades-old portraits found in Seattle church." The online version of the article is "Mysterious photos show nameless faces from out of the past" at http://seattlepi.nwsource.com/local/124992_photos04.html Bethel Christian Ministries (206-441-0444) has been at 2nd and Lenora for nearly 60 years and recently moved out of the 2033 Second Ave building, which is due for the wrecking ball. (I hope they save the beautiful facade). The building dates from the early 1900s and housed Seattle's first swimming pool. When the church was moving out, 6 crates of about 200 unidentified photos and many negatives were found in a crawl space. These are hand-tinted enlargements in good condition that date from about 1919-1926. The company that did the enlarging and colorizing was apparently the Universal Art Association or the Continental Art Company. It's going to take a lot of detective work (and luck) to identify the people in all those photos. --Ida Skarson McCormick, idamc@seanet.com, Seattle
Does anyone know where the old Collins Funeral Home records might be? They were in the central Seattle area in the early 1900s? Regarding Fees, which I knew nothing about a year ago when I called Evergreen- Washelli. They asked me if it was for genealogy, and I replied no, I wanted to know what the records said about where my grandfather was buried. It took a couple of days before they called me back with the information ... evidently only one person does research in the old records. Picture the counties .... South Snohomish County borders North King County. Therefore, the Bothell addresses with South are in South Snohomish County, and the addresses with North are in North King County. Home Undertaking Funeral Home in Seattle When I researched this funeral home last year I believe I found the records at Evergreen-Washelli. SGS Computer IG abt "Genealogical Database Add-Ons" on Saturday, June 14th The June 14th 2003 meeting of the Computer Interest Group of the Seattle Genealogical Society features Sherry Holthe from Legacy Customer Support, Millennia Corporation. Sherry will demonstrate two useful programs: GENViewer and GeneLines. She will have handouts detailing features, system requirements and pricing. Recall that each month we place one copy of all meeting handouts in the (black) Computer Interest Group three ring binder. Feel free to ask for this binder at the SGS desk and make copies for yourself. GENViewer 1.12 is a powerful viewing program that works directly with Legacy, The Master Genealogist, Family Tree Maker and PAF files and also with GEDCOM files from other database software. It has many search and report capabilities, including a multi-file search. For further information, including a free, down-loadable version of GENViewer Lite, visit Mud Creek software at http://www.mudcreek.ca/mainpage.htm . GeneLines for Legacy (and GEDCOM files) creates timelines and charts, putting your ancestors in "time" by importing historical events and relationships on colorful timeline charts. This may be the timeline program we have been seeking! For further information, visit Progeny Software at http://www.progenysoftware.com/ . We will meet on Saturday, June 14th, from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in the SGS Library at 6200 Sand Point Way NE, across the street from the US National Archives Pacific Branch. Parking is available on the nearby streets. On the Metro Transit #74 & #75 bus lines. Accessible to the Handicapped.
