I wish to thank the several responses I got from my Query re my Damon Surname quest. Excellent resonse - Ida Skarson McCormack informed me of the book at Seattle Pub. Libr. The Damon Family of Wayland, Massachusetts, which I've ordered via our brand new Snohomish Library; Robert Damon who is a guru on Damon Genealogy responded on the Damon Surname site of the rootsweb system; and I have been corresponding with an ancestral Cousin who lives in IA who has supplied me with FYI that I needed to know about the Waylan, Massachusetts branch of the Damons, my Grandmother Grace Idella (nee Gibson) Clark's mother whom I knew only as "Annie G. Damon" but my newly found Cousin has clarified that designation to "Joanna Gillett DAMON" who m. John Francis (J.Frank) GIBSON of MA and later Kent, WA. I wish to thank the other persons who wrote to me offering me assistance, and in some cases including their ties with the Immigrant Damon (Thomas Damon). As I get acclimated to the newly found Damon Family(s) I will tend to get back to the various persons connected to this Line, and their branches. I want to pursue the GILLETT name as in Grt Grandmother's Joanna GILLETT Damon as it could be another branch of the family that I need to explore. I did that with Grt Grt GF Jason S(quire) CLARK, and lo and behold I discovered a favored SQUIRE Family surname that had been among the fold and sifted down among the Clark Clan. Later, I was able to find the Squire(s) Line that the name came from. The Damons go back to Kent Co, Eng. circa 1627 so here is another interesting Line to pursue. The variant Dammon appears, also. I am so happy and appreciative of the help that transpires among the rootswebbers and their willingness to help others. It surely revs up the Adrenalin - and at age 78, 79 in Nov. that is very important; and I'm offand running ! I sent my newly found Cousin a package of gen. that will "inundate" her for awhile - probably more than she wanted to know, but I hope that she likes it in the long run. I tried to relate it to her Damon, et al, ties as much as possible. Looking forward to getting together with the Sno-Isle Gen. Society near Lynnwood, WA and the Comford Gen. Group at the Baxter Sr. Ctr. in Marysville, WA in September. Best Wishes and Successful Hunting to ALL: Carroll in Snohomish, WA w7iml@gte.net * * * 30 * * *
STANWOOD, WA - Read about a beautiful tombstone based on Love for 9-yr.old Willie Goodridge who lost his life at play - Stillaguamish River close to his home. Willie was son of " a prominant settler" Gardiner Goodridge and his 2nd wife, "Jennie Whittier-an Upper Skagit Indian" lady. Read the story of how this beloved tombstone was vandalized and disappeared from Florence Cemetery near Stanwood. For 40 yrs. the beautiful stone was missing but via a genealogical find, the stone has been cleaned and returned to its "rightful place" in honor of Willie Goodridge, age 9 -110 yrs. ago to the day that Willie drowned in the river. Ref. The HERALD, Everett, WA. Date: Wednesday, Aug 13, 2003 Section: Headline Site: http://www.heraldnet.com/about Article: Resting in its rightful place After 40 years, 9-year-old Willia Goodridge's headstone is back where it belong in a Stanwood cemetery, returned after bad behavior and a combination of a good citizen and plenty of luck. Boy drowned in Stillaguamish River By Jennifer Warnick, Herald Writer 2 PIX -Color titled: Carol Ronken admires the recently returned headstone of her great-uncle, Willie Goodridge, at the Florence Cemetery in Stanwood. PIX by Justin Best/The Herald Black and White PIX titled Willie Goodridge (seated) and his brothers Ira (left) and Orin. The photo was taken in 1896 or 1897. COMMENT: Good genealogical "detective work" has resulted in this being a success story. So many cemeteries are decimated by those who "could care less" therefore they become those who are careless, and non-thinking of what they are doing, or have done. I am reminded of Snohomish Cemetery, located at 2nd and Cypress in Snohomish, where the Snohomish Senior Center and its blacktop parking lot resides on top of the Cemetery; and a portion of the Cemetery spilling over into 2nd and Pine where a pioneer village has appeared in later years. (On either side of the 1947 Hwy 2 Cut through the off-center portion of the original Cemetery). What history lies below, and what stories abound among whose remains are still there. Vandals did their share, but so, too, were those who wished to use the cemetery grounds for Other Reasons - just because it was an old, neglected cemetery. But, who neglected it? Who owned it, or had title to it? Will the truth be known among the true history of Snohomish, or will it continue to be a distorted history by those who could know better? I checked the Social Security Death Index and found the information as noted...however, this does not mean she lived in Puyallup, she may only have lived here; or, the last Social Security Death payment may have gone to a family member here and she did not live here. I searched for a Harvey and found one born Feb 27, 1915, died Aug 1982, last residence in Olympia, WA. I checked Thurton, Pierce, King, Kitsap County online recorder office records and found no Rose Rutledge. However, if this was the correct Harvey in 1982; and Rose, then living in a home or with family up to 1997, there may not be any recorded documents in her name. Since there were no obits listed for Pierce county, I suspect either she didn't live here, or there were no family members here to place an obit; or, there were family members here-that claimed last death benefit but they didn't place an obit.

The Public is welcome at The Stillaguamish Valley Genealogical Society mtg. at 7 p.m. MONDAY at the genealogical library on 135 North Olympic Avenue. The soc. meets the 2nd Monday of each month. You may call 360-435-4838 for more Info. This Site downtown is a "must see" - they have great organization, great dedication, Staff, and selection of books, etc. all related to your tastes of those who'd like to know. I wish Snohomish had such a site. Our new Library is a beginning, it appears, but a far cry from the accumulation that has been built at the Stillaguamish site and so conveniently located ! ARLINGTON-The Stillaguamish Valley Pioneers is preparing for the 91st annual Pioneer Picnic. The potluck meal will begin at 12:30 p.m. Aug 17 at Pioneer Hall, 20722-67th Ave. NE, Arlington, WA Registration starts at 10:30 a.m. and picnickers are asked to bring their own silverware and dishes, as well as a potluck item. The pioneer mustum next door will be open. COMMENT: I'd love to go to this one as I've been wanting to see that fabulous museum up there. but I just attended the Class of 1944 Reunion of Snohomish High School grads which was a lunch bag, BYOBag- and it was well attended by say 50-60 students who try to remember what it was like when they were young. I get invited to the Class of 1943 because that is the Class that I should have grad with (good lang. eh?!);then I get invited to the Class of 1944 cuz they know I have a lot of friends among them and enjoy the comraderie; then I naturally go to my Class of 1945 cux that's the one I actually was able to grad with ( very good lang. eh?!); but I don't tell any of them that a flunked 3rd Grade and should have grad with the Class of '42 but my best friend and I both flunked 3rd Grade - I guess cuz the teacher thought we were dumb. (She only lasted 1 yr. at Central School when she must have been "canned" but that didn't help my friend and I who have grown up from diaper days and live on the same side of the Street in Snohomish just 4 blocks apart, and have been Best Pals all our lives.) I have enjoyed going to all those Reunions and I have my Class of 45 Reunion to go to Aug 8, just 3 days before I celebrate our 53 yrs of marriage. Well, one of these times I will have to make it up to the Pioneer Museum at Arlington as it surely is a large invitingly designed building in that neck of the woods. * * * 30 * * * Then, Skykomish, WA celebrates their Tunnel Days this coming Saturday 9 a.m. in Skykomish which is loc. 30 mi. east of Monroe, WA on Hwy 2. Fine arts, crafts, RR History, a 11 a.m. parade, car show, bake sale, and other attractions will be offered. One of the planned events this year for the 100th anniversary of Christ Church is an Old-Fashioned Ice Cream Social at Noon on Sunday, Aug. 10th. Beat the heat, bring the kids [a magician etc. will be present] and meet members of the Centennial committee. One of their projects has been a collection of oral histories [we have at least one living member over 100] many of which have been quoted in the church newsletter over the last year or so. The Ice Cream Social is for fun and some fundraising. It's cheap entertainment at $3 for adults and $2 for kids, plus if your family was ever a part of the church, you can touch base again. If you want to make a day of it, services start at 10AM. __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Yahoo! SiteBuilder - Free, easy-to-use web site design software http://sitebuilder.yahoo.com
