Hi: Edwin WELEVER came to Skagit Co, WA with his wife Mary E. RUTHERFORD, ACKLEY. They came to Anacortes abt. 1902. They lived in the vicinity until the early 1940's. He was b. on April 16, 1868 in Montcalm Co. MI. His siblings as far as I know (he may have more) are as follows: Asa ("Ace") b. abt.1857 Albert Ira William, b. abt. 1862 Charles, b. abt. 1864 Rosa, b. abt. 1866 The Ackley children also came west with their mother. Anyone having knowledge of this family, please contact me. Edwin and Mary are my husband's grandparents. Ellen Gordon Craven
Is anyone researching the TROSPER family? They were pioneers in Washington state. There's a road named after them near Olympia. A Trosper married into my KINDLE family (who came to Lewis County in 1902) and I just found someone with a big database of Trosper's. She said the Washington families go back to Nicholas Trosper, 1755 (ca) b. NC. Diane Hettrick Shoreline dhettrick@earthlink.net

It is all done automatically. My description of a closed list was to close it entirely and control who subscribes, not just limit posts to subscribers. The last spam we received was from an individual, not a *professional* spammer or any automated e-mail spam program. I was stating the worst case scenario, asking for patience to see if we could avoid going that far. Cyndi

Just an invite to all my friends and/or acquaintenances on PSROOTS along with co-members of the Tacoma-Pierce County Genealogy Society to view the makings of my webpage. This is in the very early Under Construction stages but there are a few pages viewable - Military Page, Will of John Patton & Will of James Robertson and of course two of my younger grandchildren have their fun page. Please give me any thoughts, pro or con, as this is all new to me. Thank you for taking the time to view it. Antoinette waughtel@oz.net http://www.fortunecity.com/millenium/savannah/252/homepage.html

We at Heritage Quest Research Library and Bookstore, have been asked "Why do I have to pay to use this library"? HQRL is a private member owned library, we are not subsidized by any government or religious organization. To run the library we sell yearly memberships, daily use fees, CD's, microfilm, microfiche, and books, etc. We also receive grants and donations, to earn monies to keep the library going . We have memberships for $30.00 per person, $35.00 per family, or daily usage fee of $4.00. As a member you are a part owner of the library and have a say in what goes on in the library. Without our daily fees and memberships the library would have to close -- which would be severe a loss for all genealogists. Thanks Gail Edwards-Petersen

Regarding the question about having Psroots "Open" or "Closed" to casual posters, I think closed will help a little bit with the spam issue, but with another twist not mentioned by Cyndi: Rootsweb lists can automatically process subscription requests, with no intervention from the listowner required. Given the size and popularity of this list, I was surprised to hear Cyndi was still doing it manually. Well, knowing her I guess I'm not surprised she's doing that. I'm sure she'll still like to send out her welcome message to new subscribers, but the subscriber would be up and running almost immediately on sending in their request. Most people now should be pretty aware of how to subscribe to a list, watch it for a day or two, then post their query. I don't think that's an imposition for the large majority of list users. And spammers will not go to the trouble of subscribing to mailing lists (at least this week). Close the list to postings from subscribed members only, but also use the automatic subscribe function of rootsweb to lighten Cyndi's load a bit. Then she can direct her energy to another project..... Marty Cassidy cassidym@accessone.com (2 c's and 2 s's in accessone) Seattle, WA USA

As I mentioned in a prior message, there are few ways to combat spam, but I will report this to all the appropriate people. We have two choices with our mailing list. We can make it an Open or Closed list. It is currently an Open list. This means that anyone can post to the list without having to subscribe first. I think this is best because it makes it possible for societies or possible cousins to post a quick note without too much hassle. A Closed list would mean that people could not post to the list unless they first subscribed. And all attempts to subscribe would have to go through me first. As the list "poohbah," I would have to read each request, then subscribe people manually. Under normal circumstances, I wouldn't mind doing that, but as things are right now I am a bit busy and would like to avoid being put in that position if possible. We have been very lucky over the last couple of years to avoid any problems with spam coming through to the list. I can't tell right now if the current problems we are dealing with are indicative of things to come or if receiving so many all in one month is just a weird coincidence. My inclination is to just sit back and watch to see if this is a continuing trend. If we continue to receive regular occurences of spam, I will be happy to close the list. Hi everyone! I just glanced up at my "subject" line. Surnames and Spam sounds like a song title! About the "spam" on the PS-List recently: The most curious thing is that of ALL the lists I belong to (a dozen or so), "PS" has been the only one to be spammed recently -- at least the only one where the spam gets through to my e- mail. (Things that make you go Hmmmmmmm.) Since I'm also a List-Owner, I agree with Cyndi. The best thing we can all do to keep our lists open and available to all our cousins, is just hit that DELETE key and let Rootsweb manage the problem. Closing the lists would make the List-Owner's life pretty miserable--probably to the point that a lot of us would have to give up the privilege. About the "surnames" of my subject: I'm gradually getting my pre-1900 data listed on a web page. Put my minuscule HOLETON portion out last night and hope to get the HOLTON stuff done by end of weekend. (Cousins married) Check it out when you get a chance. I figure if you AND your ancestors for the past 150 years were all born in the Puget Sound area, we are probably related! As I've mentioned in previous notes, my data is taken mostly from family stories and handwritten notes (in pencil). I have some letters from my mom's side of the family (written in the 1850's) that are easier to read than the family history notes my uncle (dad's brother) jotted down 30 years ago. But, there is very little in actual PROOF. "Endnotes" for each surname contain verification. Obviously, my ancestors lived in remote areas where census takers feared to tread. These same ancestors were either so poor they didn't own land or the nickname handed down through the years is not the name on the land record. Wedding ceremonies must have been performed by traveling preachers and children brought into the world by a midwife that did not keep records! But the challenge is wonderful.
