Good day to all, It seems that today, many can hide behind a keyboard and send all sorts of information, even if it isn't true. The most recent is the BIG FREEZE coming. It'll never happen while I'm alive, but I don't know about you 20 year olds. Maybe. If you could find a copy of the 10-03-98 Seattle P-I you could read the story by reporters Robert L. Jamieson & Darrell Glover. They interviewed several people, including Professor Cliff Mass, of the Atmospheric Sciences dept. at the University of Washington. Word is our coming winter will be worse than last winter because of La Nina but not the worst in 75 years. You can relax this winter. Must have been some salesman that had some 4X4's he wanted to sell us. Or was it snowplows? When the bad one comes, the Washington coast and Cascades will be colder causing the moisture to fall as snow there and other areas will get less because of that, even though they are also colder. The exception will be when the wind directions change like the one about six years ago. I left Seattle during cold dry weather, and went through Wyoming just after the weather dropped two inches there. The winds went down through Colorado & New Mexico, looping east through Texas, and then back north through Oklahoma, to Lincoln, Neb and Iowa. When the weather went through Texas it picked up moisture from the Gulf, dropping it as 14 inches of snow on Lincoln just as I got there. That is one I remember, because my cousin and I got stuck in it that night. Rumor number two: Y2K crash. It'll never happen. If you're worried about it, go out and buy a new PC like Bill Gates wants you to, with Win98 installed. He's the one that is responsible for it in the first place. Check it out. However, if you don't want to help Bill Gates, go buy a Mac, or even one of those old Apple computers. They never had the problem. And if you're using some PC software you don't want to give up, get a Mac. It can run both kinds of software and not have any problems with dates. I've tried it, but I don't need graphics for my work so I may wait awhile. I'm using a PC I bought in '94. However, the CMOS is '91, which I found out when I wanted to install a HD bigger than a 540 Gb. Had to modify to do that, but it's OK now, and I don't want Win95 or Win98. The only time the date's a problem is when you turn the PC on. If you do need the current date after 01-01-2000, just enter it when you start the PC, and then leave it on. I've tried it, and all of my software worked, though the one for solar events had problems. I can live with that. Bill Gates worked out a deal with IBM, back in 1980, and designed the PC as well as the software called MS-DOS to make it work. All that's needed is a few more lines of system code to straighten out the problem. But if you wnat to spend some money to be safe, go buy a newer PC with Win98 to help keep Bill Gates from going broke. John You wanna discuss it? Reading your e-mail triggered my memory about a Lloyd Doty who was a sports coach and, I think, a vice-principal of West Seattle High School in the mid-1930's. Perhaps he is a part of the Doty family you are researching. Good luck. Don Styer DCStyer@aol.com

Hello all - The Tacoma-Pierce County Genealogical Society in Washington state would like to invite you to our next monthly meeting on Tuesday, October 13, 1998, in the Olympic Room at the Tacoma Public Library, 1102 Tacoma Avenue South, Tacoma, Washington. Meetings begin at 7:00 pm, preceded by a social "cookies & coffee" time which begins at 6:30 pm. Guests are always welcome! Our topic and featured speaker: Notable Women Ancestors by Susanne "Sam" Behling Sam is a genealogist from Bremerton, a AOL genealogy forum tutor and webmaster of the popular Notable Women Ancestors web site at http://www.rootsweb.com/~nwa/. Sam also has a brand new newsletter of the same name. We will visit Sam's site on-line while she discusses some of the notable women included at her site, both famous and not so famous. Sam will also explain how the notable women in her own family tree led her to creating this popular site, and offer insight into researching your own female ancestors. TPCGS will have copies of a new book for sale on the publications table: A Genealogist's Guide to Discovering Your Female Ancestors : Special Strategies for Uncovering Hard-To-Find Information About Your Female Lineage by Sharon Debartolo Carmack. The book is $17.99 plus sales tax. We'd like to ask that anyone bringing cookies and treats might like to bring some made from a favorite recipe handed down to you from one of your own Notable Women Ancestors. Hello, I am researching my ggg grandfather Samuel Thompson Grimmett from Thurston Co., WA. I have a couple of questions with hopes that someone out there might be able to help. 1st. He moved to WA from Mo in about 1900, any one know what was going on during that time that would encourage such a long move? 2nd. The county library that I live will not do microfilm request from other states and I would very much like to find out about a murder on November 24, 1904 about 10 miles southeast of Olympia. It involved Samuel's son Jake in an act of self defense. It is my understanding that it is not the counties, but I couldn't find a Thurston Co and am taking a chance that someone might have access to the old newspapers. Thanks for any help. Hi Cheryl, Hope you had a great time over in Wenatchee! You mentioned that you would be going to Tacoma to do some lookups. Did you happen to find my Cordell Mason Fuson's marriage date (abt 1905) to Jennie A. Jones?? Let me know about your Fuson visit too! Gayle : : Gayle, : : Howdy cousin!! Heritage Quest Research Library happens to have the Pierce : County Marriage Index on microfilm. They will sometimes do lookups for you by : request if you are not close to their library. You might want to call them to : find out! I am going to Wenatchee the weekend of October 3 to see all of the : FUSON, HEWLING, CORN, COUCHMAN, MADDOX family that is buried there... a : couple dozen people! And to meet my aunt, who I have not met before! She's : my dad's sister. : : I have a city directory for Kitsap County, 1929. Neither Cordell or Jennie : are listed in it at that time. That may be a clue that they were still in : Pierce County in 1929. It might be a safe bet that they met, married and had : their child in Pierce County then moved to Kitsap County after 1929. Never : know! : : I will be going to the Tacoma Library next week and will lookup everything I : can find on them there and get back to you. : : Thanks, : : Cheryl Hawley :

Vernon. His sister, Clarinda Kimble Gates, married one of the Gates, and I do not know which one, Do you? >> Judith, my information says that Clarinda KIMBLE married Jasper Newton GATES. Clarinda was born September 20, 1845; died March 21, 1909. Jasper was born April 9, 1840; died November 29, 1923. My booklet ("Abel Gates, His Ancestors, His Descendants") shows that they had thirteen children. The above mentioned booklet says that Jasper was Abel's sixth child and was born in Cole County, Missouri. "Jasper enlisted in the Union Army during the Civil War. He was described as six feet one inch tall, light hair, fair skinned, blue eyes, and was twenty-two years old. He was a member of Company C, Twenty-seventh Regiment, Missouri Infantry, and was a Sergeant. On the 6th of October, 1860, Jasper married Clarinda Kimble at Kirksville, Missouri. Following the war he pioneered in the Oregon Territory (Washington State) where he was awarded a land claim. Mt. Vernon, Washington is situated on a part of his claim. The Skagit County History states that Jasper was a County Sheriff, and later a US Marshall. With his family, he left Missouri by covered wagon and arrived in Skagit County about 1870. He was a man of distinction and was called "The Father of Mount Vernon." Well, "cousin," I always warn everyone that I have not personally verified any of the GATES information. It does give a pretty good idea of where to start looking for data, though. About David Kimble: in "Yarns of the Skagit Country (Ray's Writin's) by Ray Jordan, David Kimble is mentioned several times. . . . . "What constituted the first school in Skagit County was in progress in 1873 in a log stable on the homestead of the late David E. Kimble, a short distance below the present site of Mount Vernon. . . . . ." (Page 145) "When D. E. Kimble settled on his homestead just below the present site of Mount Vernon in 1869, he was at the end of the river, in a manner of speaking. . . . ." (Pate 147) "More specifically, as to location, the old History states that the jam began at the lower boundary of the Kimble claim and extended upriver about on-half mile to a point opposite the present Kimble residence. . . . . ." (Page 148) "The Van Fleets had planned to spend the remainder of the night at the hotel, but David E. Kimble, who had a homestead at the lower end of what had been the Big Jam wouldn't hear of it. . . . ." (Page 178, describing Christmas 1880 Judith, I'm going to post this to the GATES list and the PUGET SOUND list. (Glad you liked my web page!
