    1. BROWNS & SUBSCRIBING FYI:
    2. Carroll H Clark
    3. Just yesterday, Tues., I got a 3rd. reply from my BROWN QUERY via rootsweb.com. Surprisingly, it was a man in or near New Haven, CT who is related to me by several Lines who had e-mailed me about a year or so ago. But, he tells me that he gets so much e-mail that he doesn't look at it carefully & oftentime deletes it w/o reall looking carefully at it. I had tried to e-mail him many, many times, but finally gave up and forgot about him. But, the BROWN thing brought him out of the woodwork, so now I can exchange TUTTLE info that I had wanted to discuss way back, plus BROWN & other surnames we share from the Colonial Times. Patty, you should be able to subscribe to BROWN surname rootsweb site by: BROWN-L-request@rootsweb.com or if you prefer the D or Digest version: BROWN-D-request@rootsweb.com Then type in the Message, or Text window only the word subscribe Nothing else, and be sure your signature is shut off when you do so. Since the process is automated, and you are NOT writing to a human being but to the automated subscriber, you must do exactly so, or it will not subscribe. My practice is to type subscribe in both the Subject window, and the Message, or Text window, and it works every time if the surname is available. When I subscribed to BROWN, I used the same To: window or field to try to subscribe to VINCENT with the one message subscribe The BROWN worked, but the VINCENT returned unsubscribable. Also, recently, when I unsubscribed to several surnames, I wrote each individual surname for each of the surnames I wanted to unsubscribe to and I was able to unsubscribe several surname sites with the one msg. to the automators to unsubscribe and it did so. I was getting too much info at the time. I will re-subscribe to the several surname sites in the same way, when I decide that I can handle them, reasonably. The "request" part of the subscription automator is simply to tell the automator what you want to do - either subscribe or unsubscribe. After that the request part will not be used for submitting info to the rootsweb site. Oftentime, I have blindly typed a surname in caps, such as TYLER-D-request@rootseb.com and write the subscribe in the Subject field, and in the Message, or Text field, send it and wait to see what happens. Either I get subscribed or if the Surname is not yet available on rootsweb.com then I get a msg. back to that effect. Another thing, I have found is that if you try a Surname and it doesn't "take", then after a few wks, or mos. try again - it worked for me for the name CARMAN, and I got an answer from the Webmaster telling me that the website was brand new, that it was CARMAN-ROOTS-D-@rootsweb.com and I was one of the first to subscribe to it. So, it pays to try. Good Hunting in 1999, Patty and do keep in touch. Let me know if you have any further troubles subscribing. 1. QUERY : Specifi Area Needy PCs>

    3. Do any of you out there in the Tacoma, Federal Way, Seattle, Everett areas know of persons who because of affirmity, limited budget, or otherwise hampered from using their computer to do genealogy, or otherwise search for information? If so, please contact me personally via clarkw7iml@juno.com - if they have, or have access to a PC, or IBM clone type computer of more recent vintage. I know that there are people out there who would like to use their computer, but they cannot afford the circa $20/mo. bill for Internet access. Thank you for responses re this, but only if they live within the areas of the 1st line of this Query. * * * 30 * * * Hi there Nanc! I really enjoyed reading your "jump in" and I see some things in it that I will be asking you more about. The Smith Line will be one of them as I have some Smiths ( who doesn't!!) from around the White River, Slaughter areas, aka Kent, Auburn that I would like to pursue with you. Then, I see some other names, tho' not related to me, they sound familiar: Berry, Rowe, Boundy. The Boundy is familiar from early Kent history - there was a Boundy clothing store in Kent in the 1930s etc. and Mr. Boundy & his fam. were good friends of my Grandparents of Kent - Irving Clark Fam. (Maybe it was a Pharmacy, Burt Look had a clothing store in Kent in the 30s -memory fails me at the moment !) I went to school with some of the Rowe Family - they pronounced their name as ROW as in OW! rhymes with HOW, not the usual long o or ROW as in row your boat. They still have some of the Family in Snohomish. There was a Berry Family in Snohomish - large fam. of them, also an Everett Fire Chief's last name was Berry. A Berry (railroad tower dispatcher/switchman telegrapher- Seattle built my desk in his basement, in fact, in the 30s). So, we need to do some talking via our e-mail to comb thru this. Nanc, you have a lot of history in this region so I hope you get a lot of responses, not only from just the surnames, but the various historical items you apparently have for us to enjoy. * * * Sounds like those Weather Warnings for 1998-1999 weren't so far off, after all - even if the inch predicitons, and specifics may not be true - - - SO FAR ! Earthquake in the Puyallup area ! 2.5 is ENUFF ! WHAT HATH GOD WROUGHT. Keep warm, and safe! 1. Otto DRUMM
    2. Welcome Nancy, I enjoyed reading your 'jump in' story. I signed up just a few days ago myself, hoping to uncover information about an elusive relative. My gg-grandmother had 7 brothers and 1 sister who came to America from Germany starting around 1850. I have much information about the family line going back to around 1600, but am not making much headway in tracking down these siblings. I know that one of them, Otto DRUMM, ended up in Tacoma, about 1887. He had a restaurant/bar/tavern. He and his twin brother Eugen (born 1860 in Theisbergstegen, Germany) were the youngest of the siblings, born after the others had already left Germany. I know, from sources in Germany, that on Christmas 1907, the oldest brother, Jacob DRUMM, while visiting his daughter, who had married a R.E. Arnett in Denver on 8 Augus 1885), walked into this establishment. The brothers, although they had never met before, immediately knew each other. They both looked like their father. This story supposedly appeared in an German-American newspaper. I also know that Otto was still alive in 1933. The obituary of another brother, Adolph DRUMM, mentioned him as a surviving family member. So far I have only been able to locate another Otto DRUMM, born in 1891 in Tacoma through the Social Security records. He probably was the other Otto's son. I have contacted the Tacoma Genealogy Society and am waiting for results on a search they are doing. I also found a website for the Tacoma cemeteries. They are looking through their records for me. If anybody out there has any information or suggestions that might help me in finding the descendents of Otto, I would be very, very greatful. Thanks, Brigitte in Arizona

    2. Hi Everyone! How's this Carroll, didn't have to test the water, I just jumped in. I have alot of relatives in the Puget Sound area that I know about and alot I didn't and still don't. To get started, I am Nancy Brown (such an easy surname to pursue). Anyway, some of the surnames that are in and around the Puget Sound area are: Plants of the D. D. Plants Grocery and Feed Store, cir. 1880's plus, in Ballard. This was my great grandparents store, in fact , it was featured in the book "The History of Ballard" (I think that was the name of the title). Anyway, there was even a picture in the book showing my great grandparents in front of the store. Their names are Denallen "Dean" Dow Plants b. 8 Dec 1862 in Mt Ayr, IA married Emily Elizabeth" Emma" Morie b. 2 Nov 1867 in the Washington Territory, prior to Washington becoming a state. They married in Milton, Or, then moved to Seattle to raised their family and own the store. Brown of Chehalis and Centralia brought here with the lumber industry, Ernest Zemro Brown b. 8 May 1869 in Bradley, ME married Ada G. McCauley b. 12 May 1874 in Saginaw, MI. They married in the Michigan, Minnesota area and then migrated to the Pacific Northwest. They originally lived in Onalaska before moving to Chehalis. Where they lived until their passing and are now located in the historical Claquato Cemetary outside of Chehalis. Berry is also one of the founding families of the Oregon and Washington Territories. Thomas F. Berry b. 10 Sep 1819 inGuernsey Cty, OH, he married Martha Jane Timberlake b. 7 Sep 1820 in Newport, KY. They came from Indiana in 1853, helping establish the Centralia area and Tumwater and Olympia. Thomas F. Berry was a surveyor when he arrive in Washington, only to eventually become a Representative in the Eighth Legislative Assembly of Washington Territory in 1860 He served on the Ways and Means Committee, but he always printed on the committee report as Berry. In 1864 he moved to Thurston County then onto Walla Walla County. They also had a son in the area that was of a substantial contributor to his community, Ira Ward Berry. Morie the maiden name of Emily Elizabeth "Emma" , was also a well respected name in the Seattle area after moving from Milton, OR, where her and Dean Plants had met and married. Rowe is another foundation name in the Pacific Northwest for me, as this is my grandparents last name. Of which several people migrated from the Iowa area to the Puget Sound area. There are brothers and sisters and their children all over the Tacoma, Seattle area that originated from the name Rowe and have become Anderson's, and various other Scandinavian names. Russell is part of the Rowe ancestry, they were one of the first families in the Auburn area when it was still named Slaughter, WA. Named on behalf of a Lt. Slaughter that had been killed by the Indian attacks in that area. Andrew Jackson Russell b. 6 Apr 1835 in Rockville, IN married Easter Neta Case b. 10 Feb 1842 in Clay County, IN they lived in Early, IA for many years before they decided to follow one of their oldest children to the Pacific Northwest. Upon arrival they decided to stay and continue with increasing their family to 12 children. Most of the downtown area was the farming land of the Russell's, the children married Prentice's, Yost's, Cates, Boundy, Smith, Jensen, Vertsch, Rommel, Davis, Brannon, Westcott, and Ward. This are all in connection with my lineage. Andrew and Easter are still located in Auburn at the Mountain View Cemetary on the hill along with some of the young children that left the living family at an early age. I hope this will be a start of some of my background in the area. Carroll, I told you I could jump in. I hope that I have not overdone my intro. I just wanted to be sure I was as complete as I could be, but like everyone else, I do have more. Please let me know if any of this information sounds familiar and we might have a link. Thank you for accommodating me. Nancy Brown

    2. Steve Cole
    3. Hello I'm trying to find out about Delbert Cole. All I know is that his father was Elias Cole b.1880 d.1943. His name showed up in Elias Cole's obit. but I had no previous knowledge of him. Elias Cole was married to a Reinette Whitbeck and they had two children Floyd and Richard. In Elias's obit. however his surviving relatives are listed as two sons in Portland OR Floyd and Richard, and then listed is Delbert Cole, I'm assuming he was from another marriage. I think this is the case because later Reinette Whitbeck remarried and in the census report Floyd and Richard are listed as step-children to her new husband Leslie Graham. Help please.... Thanks in advance, Steven M. Cole

    2. Thanks everyone for your answers to my question. I appreciate everyone's help. I did receive in yesterday's mail a form from the National Archives telling me that there are 67 more pages in the individual's file and if I want copies of them it will cost me $25.00. This notification arrived several days after the packet of pages that they copied and mailed to me. I did ask them to copy the entire file on my initial request and authorized payment up to $40.00 but apparently they have to go through their form of "red tape" and fill out the necessary forms. I do plan to look into the possibility of ordering the records on microfilm. Judy

I got this from a cousin and thought it was so special. I can't send it to you like I got it because it is a picture and some of you can't receive that format, especially the lists, Sue would kill em. So I just thought I would retype it to share: Bless My Computer Every night I lie in bed, this little prayer inside my head. God Bless all those I hold so dear, And keep them safe thru coming year; And, God, there's just one more thing I wish you would do If you don't mind me asking, to bless my 'puter too? Now I know that it's not normal to bless a small machine, But listen just a second, and I'll try to explain... You see, this little metal box holds more than odds and ends Inside those small components rest a hundred loving friends. Some, it's true, I've never seen, and most I've never met. We've never shaken hands or even hugged and yet... I know for sure they love me, by the kindnesses they give. And this little scrap of metal is how I get to where they live. By faith is how I know them, much the same as I know you. I share in life it brings them so if it's ok with you... Just take an extra minute from your duties up above... To bless this little hunk of steel that's filled with so much love. Amen. Here is hoping that each and every one of you have the happiest of New Years and may 1999 bring at least ONE answer to some of our most elusive ancestors, like what happened to my great grandmother, Nancy Lunsford Jordan? :-) HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!!!
