The London Bridge in Arizona is certainly older than the one now in use. It was opened in 1831, and widened from 52 feet to 65 feet in 1901. But when we talk about "old" London Bridge we usually mean not even the one that "new" bridge replaced but an even earlier structure, built of timber and with wooden houses standing on it, that in John Lothropp's day would have been one of the great sights of London. Please Delete/Scroll, if not interested: A newly formed High Prairie Genealogical Society has been in the winds of peoples minds down Lyle, WA. parts. It's located at Hartland, WA. Well, where is Hartland, let alone "High Prairie"? High Prairie/Hartland is 12 mi. N into the interior from Lyle, WA ( loc. on the Columbia River), across and down river from The Dalles. Hartland found on old maps, High Prairie, not to my knowledge -the Community of farmers called it that, very fondly! Beautiful view of distant mountains S from up there ! Watch for rattle snakes, cats ! Wild! Nada (Clark) McMurren, ret'd Teacher at Lyle, and her many friends have worked diligently to initiate this new gen. soc. to accumulate the many memories, memorabilia, and gen. of this obscure loc. in Klickitate Co. Nada was discovered by me when, in 1983, I wrote to the Post Master, Lyle, WA. inquiring about anyone who would know Hartland, WA as it had a U.S. Post Office turn of the century. It was Nada that answered me as she was Secy. to the Lone Pine Cemetary (yes, that is the way it's spelled over entrance to it) at Hartland, but to the natives, fondly, "High Prairie" and still is. Nada,an ancestral Cousin it turn out, was the one who handed me my Clark Line genealogy back to 1637 CT! The rest is "History!" bitten completely and irretrievably by the gen. bug! Now is my chance to "repay" her and the High Prairie Gen. Soc. by sending them a VHS copy of my 8mm. Hi 8 creation of gen. on video. This was the 2 hr. video that I made about a yr ago and mentioned on PSR a few mos. back. Chock full of gen.! As I type, the 2 hr tape is being fed to the VHS in recording mode, set for the full 2 hr. capacity of the VHS tape - supposedly the higher the speed, the better the copy. However, I have compared Extra Long Play and the highest speed and discern little difference using various quality tapes. Text is one of the critical items when video taping - especially after being copied - copying tends to deteriorate in quality of image, unless digital enhancement is used - that is expensive. The close-ups of pix, fan type gen chart, diaries galore, autograph albums, memorabilia can show legibly. If I found some priting or writing that just didn't photograph that well, I got close ups, and read them aloud as I was video taping to act as a crutch. In doing this video & contributing it to this newly formed society, I have been able to furnish them with a lot of genealogy items in a two hour package. There are the rare large sized pix of the rustic cabin school at High Prairie, with fortunately the names of nearly all of the students of various ages, and names of their teachers both on the front and the back. Someone was thinking ahead! My source, blood relatives, lived in Everett, WA. are long gone to Texas, but thank God they allowed me to do something that I had always wanted to do on my own, and that is make a documentary with some value to it, and I think this tends to fulfill that desire - something useful to someone sometime. Time? Turn of the Century, later 1800s thru early 1900s, but of course these people branched out over the generations, many still strung along the Columbia R., down into OR, up through Puget Sound Country and the Pac. NW. From my Photo notes, are surnames:Hiatt, Putman (man)James J., judge & Fam of Centerville, and High Prairie; Baker, Ryman, Tate(friends not related), French (same), Clark, of course, et al. Danish Sorensen surname, Cooksley, farther down the track. I see that I am running out of ink, so I must stop ! My cursor is about to be cursed. Carroll. Hi Dianne, I too have an item that is off topic. In fact, it's so far off that I won't post it here. I have an e-mail "document" that I would like a few to review. Hello to native puget sounders just don't want to leave anyone out - several of us are having offline conversations about our childhood and 60's cultural influences growing up in western washington. do check the web site George found - just too much fun! http://callihan.netgate.net/seattle/past.htm Ok - anyone remember Engineer Walt or Gabe's? Don McCune was Capt. Puget on the old Seattle Kid's tv show... Ivar Hagland of Ivar's was a regular visiter. Later Don McCune did a 1/2 (?) tv show that covered all sorts of northwest activities. These shows are being re-released by McCune's wife, who is also involved with publishing books of his adventures. One of his shows was about following the Alaskan Gold miners trails through the Yukon into Alaska... Hello Puget Sound searchers, Virtue is its own reward <she said smugly> I went looking for Capt. Puget - for whom I have fond memories - and found him. The web site for the Don McCune Library is below and I copied part of the section about his Capt. Puget persona. However, what I found in the process was an AWESOME search engine. Listen up! For obscure searches like dead local celebrities, I have been using a big search engine called dogpile - it takes a long time to load but it searches 12 search engines at one time and has access to about 6 more. I nearly always find what I want. So I typed in www.dogpile.org/ and sat back to wait. Whoosh! Instant load and I'm looking at something called 37.com with a simple screen and a place to type in your keywords. Typed in "don mccune" - hit search - and whoosh! instant load and first choice is the Don McCune library. 37.com searches 37 search engines - every one I have ever heard of and a few I haven't. I am breathless. http://37.com/ Ok - have to go now and look for obscure dead ancestors on 37.com Diane Shoreline Mailto:dhettrick@earthlink.net http://web3.foxinternet.net/donmccune/ http://web3.foxinternet.net/donmccune/History.htm Captain Puget ~ 1957-1966 In 1957, KOMO-TV in Seattle asked Don to be Captain Puget, the skipper of the 'Windward Four', taking northwest children on television voyages around Puget Sound and singing sea chanteys. For nearly ten years this daily live broadcast sailed the northwest airwaves. Don was fondly known as Captain Puget for the rest of his life.
I must be the only old fogey here! He was Captain Puget. I practically grew up on he and JP, Brakeman Bill and Sheriff Tex. CP did several historical pieces for TV, one of which was on the Klondike. He and several others followed the trail must have been late 60's or early 70's. A library or museum in his honor would undoubtedly be of use to many readers. Hi list, One of the things I really like about this list is the history of the Puget Sound area that is posted. Carroll Clark is one of our greatest contributors. I especially like his comments on the present and past action and events of the area. I though that was what genealogy is really about. What good is a list of names if you don't know any thing about them or how their lives differ form ours?. I signed up for the Hawaiian roots list which said it was for Hawaiian History and Genealogy. the only thing I ever see there is request for name searches, I have sent is several post requesting historical facts and information and never get any replies. If this all this list is only going to be, requests for name searches, I will be gone. Kit, Olala WA. kits@kits.seanet.com
Hi Fredi, That Louis is Leonard and he was skipper of the Lorne and Tees, etc. The Lorne was a Puget Sound Navigation tug but "leased" to a Canadian company to get by Customs. I don't yet know how the name Louis got switched from Leonard but there is no doubt that it is the same person. I have a very good amount of info on the CPR and when he drowned ( court records, etc ) but I am trying to fill in some of the gaps in the early years. I have all the directory info for Victoria but lack Nanaimo (Sp) and also info on 1890s' in Port Townsend, etc. Fred, my father, immigrated to the US in 1926 and was working on the Seattle-Tacoma run ??? I remember him working out of Edmonds (Black Ball) when I was little but prior to that is still a mystery. He drowned in Seattle in 1942 on the tug Annie Foss ( I think) Thanks for the help.. any and all info is gratefully accepted.
