    3. Dear Mike, Our Tacoma-Pierce County Genealogical Society is in the process of data entering the deaths at Western Washington Hospital, in order to publish. It is possible that your great uncle is buried in the burial grounds near the hospital. I believe that the undertaker is Oscar Storlie. Sad to say, but ALL of his funeral home records were burned! If you would like to send a copy of the death record, perhaps we can help you. If you would like further research in this area, our Society has a person who does this. Go to our web site http://www.rootsweb.com/~watpcgs/about.htm Then go to the Family Line Research web page and follow the directions http://www.rootsweb.com/~watpcgs/famline.htm Good luck to you! 3. Mike, About 17 years ago I worked briefly at Western State Hospital and at the time I was there the hospital had a library on the grounds. Checking through my stuff I found a "history" of the hospital that I had photocopied. It's probably a hundred pages long and I have no idea where in it I would find any info on deaths or cemeteries. I will try to scan through it but you might have better luck contacting the hospital itself. The number there, at the library, is 253-756-2518. The nearest cemetery to the hospital is the New Tacoma Cemetery which is anything but new and could well be where he would be buried. Their number is 253-564-1311. On checking further I see that American Lake Veteran's Hospital, which is also in the area, officially opened on May 9,1924 and until that time the Army at Camp Lewis contracted with Western State Hospital to care for the mentally ill veterans . WSH housed the patients from August 1920 until then when 168 patients were transferred to ALVH. Conditions were so overcrowded at ALVH's new facility, however, that a new ward was opened for veterans at WSH in September 1924. There is a small cemetery on the grounds which was used for the burial of soldiers who in the early territorial days served at Fort Steilacoom and for their families. This, however, predates the use of the land as a hospital. In 1919 the legislature appropriated funds to be used in part toward the erection of a crematorium. And there is a reference to "the old morgue" being used for other purposes around 1939. My guess would be that your GUncle is buried at the NTC. I decided to read through the "history" I have but found only the above references. The hospital, itself, might be able to enlighten you more. Your question, however, has reopened my interest in the institution so I thank you. If I learn more I will contact you. Think I'll run out there and see what the library looks like nowadays. 2. Hi Folks, I'm new to your list and hope someone can answer this query. My GUncle, shortly after his discharge from the Army in 1922, spent ten months at the "USOB Dept. Western State Hospital before dying in Dec. 1923. I cannot make out the place of burial nor the Undertaker. The first appears to be something like "Tacoma Twp." The latter is as bad, but looks something like"(?P?)Oscar S_octip". I would think that there would have been a particular funeral home or establishment that would have handled deaths occuring at the hospital; but maybe not. Anyone have any clues on this. Many thanks! 2. Western State Hospital is in Tacoma Washington off Steilacoom Blvd near where my family lives. The old hospital still remains on the hill across the park from it. As far as the funeral home that information is unknown to me. What else can you distinguish?

    3. Jetsam, Please Delete/Scroll if not interested. Flotsam, I want to take this opportunity to show my Appreciation to two persons who came on PSR and expressed their appreciation of my efforts. Maudeen Wachsmith, I want you to know how much I enjoyed your msg. and that I honored, understood, and agreed completely with what you wrote. You were very tactful with me, and I want you to know how much I appreciate that. You are a true Friend, and I hope that I can be of help in some way to you in the future. Thanks a Meg. ! Norma Lewis, these same words of Appreciation apply equally to you! I want you to know how greatly I appreciate your coming to bat for me and I enjoyed your desciption of me to the t . Norma and I have known each other since we tangled with the Snohomish Cemetery foray that began long ago, and still erupts. Norma and I would erupt with each other over things, and we became at logger-heads with each other at times. Even though I lived in Snohomish since 1924, I wasn't about to go stomping into City Hall and raise holy h- e- double-toothpicks re Snohomish Cemetery concerns. I'm not an activist, not into Politics, nor Propaganda, despite my interest in People. Thank goodness that Norma and I have buried any hatchets we had in Snohomish Cemetery, as we are friends today in spite of all the frictions of the past. In fact, I consider us Bosom Buddies, which more "politically" correct would translate to "cool" in the latest version. We had been cool before, but that was more like " cool to each other" in the 30s version <BG>! I was taught when I was growing up in Snohomish by my Uncle, Herbert O. Ness, whom I called "Unc" in the same sense as "Dad" as he raised me as his own, though we were not blood related. He took over when my Dad died when I was 3. Unc taught me over the many years by Example - his demeanor and his concern for People. "One of the greatest of Hells on earth, is the lack of Appreciation!" That phrase has always remained in mind of from my '30s boyhood, and is just applicable today as it was when I heard "Unc" make that statement, many many times. His Minnesota Norwegian background along with that Norwegian ancestry has come through loud and clear over the many years. This is why I wish to honor these two persons for their kindness to me, and at this same time, I extend my appreciation to all of you, males, and females, who wrote e-mail to me and expressed these same sentiments to me personally, but not on PSR. I could sense the true meaning of, Appreciation. I thank all 250 + of you who make PSR home for Family History/genealogy for this space. Carroll Clark Snohomish, WA. 2. John Wm Sloniker
    3. Check this; "I'm looking for my g-grandmother's marriage record and can't find it. Does anyone know where I can find it?" I see that request so often I wonder how they might think I would know when they haven't given any dates. Prior to 1907 the record systems were so very different from today that I could only guess. Some states didn't even try to keep records until 1912, and others only started their current system in 1908. The best I can do is suggest you check at your local library for the book that tells when and where records were started and where they are kept today. It's different for every state and record type prior to 1907. A guess for the date is better than nothing for a request like that. For my files every record has a date. Some say About and some say Guess, but they do have dates. The next person will have something to start with, if I get run over tomorrow and can't finish my work. If you don't want to chase down to the library for the information there is the "Handybook for Genealogists" put out by the LDS, that can be found in a Family History Center [FHC] or even at many Genealogical Societies. For VIRGINIA you will find: Until 1786 the Anglican Church was the state church of Virginia. In accord- ance with English law the church kept parish registers of vital statistics. Unfortunately, most of these are no longer in existence. Those that do ex- ist have been photocopied and are in the Virginia State Library. ------- To verify current fees, call 804-786-6228. The Archives Division of the Virginia State Library has copies of all exist- ing birth and death records prior to 1896, and marriage records 1853-1935. Beginning in 1660, a couple could marry by posting a bond with civil author- ities or publishing banns at church. Reporting was required after 1780, but was sometimes done before that. Probate records are at the county level with the general court and circuit superior court. Independent cities have pro- bates at the circuit court clerk's office. Lists of residents are available for some colonial years. Lists for 1624 and 1779 have been published. After that you will find a list of Genealogical Archives, Libraries, and Societies, followed by lists of printed sources. Finally the counties are given, listing their parent county and when records were first kept there. Since each state and county is different it's a very helpful book and shows what I've said before is important. Know the geography and history for the area you're interested in. They both are very important along with dates. 3. Hi Andi and everyone on the list, I know of two of the representatives on the list below, but they don't know me and I am not one of their constituents. I don't think it would hurt to send messages to other legislators, but what I chose to do was contact the two reps from my district (who know me), tell them that this legislation is important to me as one of their constituents, and ask them to support it. I happen to know that one of the reps on your list is a buddy of one of my reps. I told mine that I'm a family historian in my spare time and that family historians have a strong affinity for well-run graveyards. I also told them enough to assure them of Andi's credibility as the person giving me this information. The most powerful voices come from the reps' own constituents - be sure to include your address when you send email to your representative. However, getting mail from foreign countries and far away states always makes a good story - so those of you far from Puget Sound might like to lend your voices. You who are local might like to check to see if any of these representatives belong to you. Go to http://dfind.leg.wa.gov/ - the Washington State District look-up page - put in your ZIP + 4 and it will tell you your representatives. There is so much to do to record and preserve graveyards - we don't need unnecessary obstacles. Diane Hettrick 32nd Legislative District dhettrick@earthlink.net Andrea D. 1. Fw: Cemetery Board Legislation
    2. Andrea D. MacDonald
    3. Hello all; YOUR HELP IS NEEDED -- TODAY!!!! Widest dissemination of this message to all Washington state maillists is requested. John Donnellan is the Director of the Washington State Cemetery Board. A discussion with him last night revealed that he has introduced legislation in the House, HB 1251, to combine two state boards (the Cemetery Board and the Funeral Home Board) into one group. This was done at the request of the Governor. Why is the Washington State Cemetery Association assisting in gathering support for this legislation? By supporting the Cemetery Board in this endeavor, we are working with them to accomplish our end goal -- that of saving old and abandoned cemeteries. Apparently both Boards (the Cemetery Board and the Funeral Board) do common work and by combining, they would be able to combine that common work to release more hours for other duties. Currently, both Boards have three employees and one public (unpaid) member. The new legislation would allow for the combined six employees and two public employees PLUS one new public (unpaid) member for a total of nine Board members. This would mean equal representation for all concerned. Why is your help needed? Because the highly paid lobbyists of the private cemeteries and private funeral homes within the state have, for the last six years convinced politicians in Olympia that this new legislation is NOT NEEDED. Why are they paying those lobbyists the big bucks to suppress the legislation? Because if the Boards combined, the funeral homes and cemetery owners would be competing for the same monies and they don't want to do that. What can you do? Here are some email addresses for you to send an email to supporting HB 1251 (see below signature for more information on bill) -- send one to each! If you can attend the hearing on Friday in Olympia, the hearing is before the House State Government Committee.
