Just one note: The exit sign does actually say Gravelly Lake Drive. Gravelly Lake is by the community of Ponders Corner, which is on the west side of I-5 across from McChord Air Force Base. The 2nd exit south of Hwy 512 should mention Ponders Corner & McChord (been some time since I've been by there) and you want the roadway that is away from McChord, which should become Gravelly Lake Dr, that runs in a northerly direction from there. Follow Gravelly Lake Dr. as it circles the west side of Gravelly Lake past Lakewold Gardens at the intersection of Veterans Dr till you get to the intersection of Washington Blvd. Turn west, about a 1/2 mile, to the intersection of 83rd Ave SW. On my map there is a small cemetery on the NE corner of the intersec- tion, though no name is given for it. Hopefully it's the right one. Washington Blvd connects with Military Rd, which leads to Steilacoom. That cemetery is about two miles from Ft. Steilacoom where the state hospital known as Western Washington Hospital is located. There is a copy of the Washington State Death Index at the WAGS library in Wenatchee. Library hours are Tuesday - 1 to 4 Thursday - 1 to 4 Saturday - 1 to 4 If you are coming some distance to visit the library - would be wise to check the web page - we will be moving this late spring and will be closed for at least 2 weeks.
The Washington Death Index is on 12 microfilms from 1907 - 1979 and then on microfiche from 1980 - 1997. There is an overlap of records between the two mediums. The Washington State Archives has it and the Tacoma Library's Northwest Room. I'm sure there are other libraries that also have it. Some LDS Family History Centers have it on indefinite loan and if your local FHC doesn't they can order the microfilm you need for your lookup. What are you looking for Melissa? Hi Ida, Seems that our emails passed in vapor space. Thanks very much for your reply. Will send off a note to the SGS and Dan Carney. Would also like to learn about their Irish SIG. Academic libraries are very familiar territory for me, so there's no problem there. Thanks again. Pat Wood Fircrest, WA
The Washington Death Index is available at the Seattle Public Library and probably most larger public libraries in the state. It is probably also available at most if not all the LDS Family History Centers in the State of Washington. For those outside the state or in remote areas, an interlibrary loan request could be made through their local public librarian for these rolls of microfilm and microfiche from the Washington State Archives. BTW, Seattle Public Library's Central Library is scheduled to close June 9 through July 6 for moving to its temporary quarters. --Ida Skarson McCormick, [email protected], Seattle At 02:33 PM 04/03/2001 -0400, Susan Hudgens wrote: >The Washington State Death Index is on microfilm in the collection of >Heritage Quest Research Library, 909 Main St #5, Sumner, Washington.
Pat and all - I found the original source of the info for the Lemieux Library. I received it from Ida Skarson McCormick in June 1997. See that portion of her note below. Ida is active on this list, so perhaps she can add more to this discussion. Good luck, Cyndi P.S. And most people mock me when they hear that I have kept every e-mail I ever sent or received. <G> >Date: Mon, 16 Jun 1997 20:39:46 -0700 >From: "Ida S. I can't recall *exactly* who contributed that, but will go through my old e-mail. The list was originally put together 2-3 years ago. I'll see what I can find. Cyndi
Pat: I was the contributor of this tidbit to Cyndi's online list. Dan Carney was the original proponent and expert on the Irish resources he found at Seattle University's Lemieux Library. He emphasized that beginners in Irish research should not go to Lemieux Library. People who go to academic libraries should not expect librarian assistance and should be engaged in historical research. Ask the Seattle Genealogical Society (206-522-8658 or PO Box 75388, Seattle, WA 98125-0388) if there is a copy of Dan Carney's ca. 1975 lecture handout in the vertical files or on the shelves. Or perhaps the SGS Irish Interest Group has a bibliography from one of subsequent presentations by Dan. SGS is in the midst of a move to the Sand Point Way area, so this may not be the best time to ask. Perhaps a reader of this list has a personal copy of one of Dan's handouts. Another possible source of info is a book of bibliography for Irish resources in the Puget Sound Area published in probably the 1970s by the Tacoma-Pierce County Genealogical Society, organized by library, as I recall. --Ida Skarson McCormick, [email protected], Seattle At 09:22 PM 04/03/2001 -0700, Pat Wood <[email protected]> wrote: >According to the footnote re the Seattle U.'s Lemieux Library ... there >are excellent resources there for ADVANCED Irish research.<snip>
Cyndi You asked for feedback .... :) According to the footnote re the Seattle U.'s Lemieux Library ... there are excellent resources there for ADVANCED Irish research. Well, I'm a reasonably experienced Irish researcher, and have tried Lemieux's on-line catalog several times to locate resources that intermediate and advanced Irish researchers would expect to find. No success at all. Tried authors, topics, subjects ... They do seem to have a nice collection re literature and history, however. So, either the Lemieux search engine has me beat, or else the person who identified that facility as a resource for Advanced Irish research has something else in mind. Would it be possible to put me in touch with the person who gave you this comment .... or get some examples of what they are referring to ? I would really like to make use of the Lemieux, but don't care to make a fruitless trip up there. Thanks very much.
