A book, Pierce County (History of) by W.P. Bonney, Volume I. Mentioned him several times. He was in the militia. He donated some land to the area. The Old Rigney farm was within the present boundary lines of Tacoma. It mentions that Mr. and Mrs John Rigney were married in New York, September 30, 1848. He helped to establish Fort Steilacoom, August 1849. He was born in Ireland, June 12, 1815 and died at Steilacoom, May 15, 1892. There was also a picture of the two of them. He sitting, she standing to his right, (photographers left). If you don't have the photo, I machine copied it and will send. Looking through a book I have on Roy, Washington, I found the names listed above with question marks to possibly be: OLAF MOE and RAYMOND CRUICKSHANK. Not positive, but looks as though that may be the proper names for these two individuals. Olympia,Thurston County, Washington Territory September 2, 1871, Saturday The Weekly Pacific Tribune ANOTHER MURDER IN PIERCE CO. The adjoining county of Pierce continues to maintain its character for lawlessness and murder. To the credit of the new comers, however, it must be said that this character is confined to the old settlers. We have now to chronicle another bloody affair, the particulars of which we learned yesterday, on our visit to that county. On Saturday evening last the body of James CAWLEY was found in his back yard, about four miles from Steilacoom, riddled with buckshot. When found, life had been for some time extinct. The Coroner (Mr. PINENS) was immediately summoned, a jury empaneled and a post mortem examination held, and a verdict of murder found, all before midnight. The inquisition elicited the fact that R. W. WALKER, who owned and occupied the farm adjoining CAWLEY's, was a bitter enemy of the latter, and had made threats against his life. On this testimony he was taken in custody, and now awaits trial at the next term of the District Court. It is about time Pierce County turned over a new leaf. Hi Everyone, The summer series of cemetery tours of Snohomish County and vicinity is continuing. Two tours have already taken place, the third (Snohomish and Machias) is this Saturday, August 18. General information for the whole series is given below, please see the specific information shown on the schedule for August 18th. The series is sponsored by the Sno-Isle Genealogical Society, the Washington Cemetery Project (http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/wa/wacem.htm), and by Washington GenWeb. Tours are led by Kevin Fraley and Laura Sparr. The tours will visit eight to nine cemeteries each, and will be held on Saturdays beginning promptly at 10 AM. A number of the cemeteries we will visit are not well known, and some have fascinating histories. Everyone is welcome, please bring good walking footwear and be prepared for the weather, we will go rain or shine. At each cemetery visited, we will discuss the history of the cemetery and all names by which the cemetery has been known, visit points of interest including burial places of prominent persons, and take a brief walking tour of the grounds. We expect each tour to take about 6-7 hours, and we will try to work out carpool and lunch arrangements as the group desires. We request a 5 dollar donation per tour, all proceeds to benefit the Sno-Isle GS library in Edmonds. Schedule: June 23 Cemeteries of Edmonds, Shoreline, Brier, Bothell, & Woodinville We visited 11 cemeteries on this tour. July 21 Cemeteries of Mukilteo & Everett We visited 8 cemeteries on this tour. August 18 Cemeteries of Snohomish & Machias We expect to visit 8 cemeteries on this tour. Meeting place is McCollum County Park, on 128th St. SE (State Highway 96) one quarter mile East of Interstate 5 between Everett and Mill Creek. We will meet at 10AM in the parking lot closest to the freeway, right in front of the swimming pool. Latecomers can join the tour at its first stop, Marshland Cemetery, which is difficult to find but located on the SE side of Seattle Hill Road (State Highway 96) at about the 12200 block. September 15 Cemeteries of Marysville, Tulalip I.R., Arlington, & Silvana We expect to visit 9 cemeteries on this tour. Meeting place will be announced. October 13 Cemeteries of Stanwood & Camano Island We expect to visit 8 cemeteries on this tour. Meeting place will be announced. If you think you will be coming, please let Kevin or Laura know at the e-mail addresses or telephone numbers shown below. If your plans are "last minute," that is all right too, just show up at the announced time and place. Feel free to cantact us for further information. We look forward to seeing you! I thought it was illegal to have anything but the clothes buried with a human? In SF, this past weekend at the AGS conference, we had a bus tour through Colma, the town with 16-17 cemeteries and only 200 living residents. We were told there is a famous Hell's Angel buried with his motorcycle there. I wonder if I can take my computer... Andi ----- Original Message ----- From: "Diane K. Hi Stephen, I'll pass your email on to Kit Niemann as she is/was very interested in locating logging camp information. Andi, I have some miscellaneous details regarding wife's g. grandfathers family. I would have to dig through some material. It could possibly be helpful. Sincerely, Stephen G. Schweyen Seattle
I thought I'd heard it all - but the Mason County Kentucky list has a new one. Someone asked how to find records from a funeral parlor called Porter and Sons. Apparently it was in business for decades. Turns out there are absolutely no records available, because !!!! Mr. Porter had them buried with him! All the paperwork, all the picture portraits from the lobby, it all went in a box in his grave. Talk about digging up records.... Diane Hettrick
Hi Everyone My name is Patrick Cardinal and I am originally from the Puget Sound area. I grew up in Shelton WA. My entire family is still currently living in the area, but they are not interested genealogy. I am now living in the state of Nevada and trying to do my research from here. It is very hard when you live so far away. I am decended from John Rigney who was one of the founding settlers of Puget Sound. He arrived at Ft. Steilacoom in 1849 as a soldier. He had a son and daughter who were twins who were born on January 2, 1850. They were supposed to be the first two white children born in the area. I am looking for information on a daughter of John Lowrey Rigney named Mary Rigney. She married Arcade Cardinal. I am looking for the date of the marriage and also the names of Arcade Cardinal's parents. any help would be greatly appreciated. Pat.

Thanks Donna, I will. Kit is probably in the mountains with her alpacas and tourists. She does that during the summer and works on other things in the winter. I will keep your email in a special file for her. It may be Halloween before you hear from her. She was asked to do a book on logging camps and she is searching for any and all material she can find.
