    1. [PRUSSIA-ROOTS] German Military question
    2. Hello, Louisa and Frederick Reh came to the US from Prussia in 1880. It seems that when WWI broke out Frederick headed back to Germany and died fighting for Germany. He was listed among the German war dead in 1916. Can anyone tell me why he would travel back to Germany to enter the war after living here for 30 years? Researching the Kolpack and Schmick families from Kreis Rosenberg. Thanks, Jeffrey Kolpack

    3. Possibly because he felt strong family ties to his Fatherland (Vaterland) and home (Heimat). 3. Similar circumstances with two brothers of my mother. Both immigrated to the US in 1929. This was after a talk from my grandfather advising all his children to leave before things really got bad! Anyway, one went back because he did not like America and the other felt his obligation was to his aged parents and another brother that was not military material (retarded). Both were conscripted and both ended up as POW's, one in Russia and the other in England. You had to know what was in their heart before determining the reason for returning. 3. Hi Jeffrey, which list of German war dead do you mean ? Are you shure that this Friedrich Reh among the list is really your ancestor ? There were many persons with this name in Germany. 3. If Frederick was 20 when he arrived in the US in 1880, he would have been 56 in 1916... seems a bit old for a soldier. Perhaps the record you found was for a cousin or nephew? Marsha L.
