Keep in mind the pronunciation of the German language that the 'g' sounds like 'k'. My point being, the surname would have been pronounced Burk. If a non-German speaking individual heard Burk... the inscription on records would be such, not Berg and add the bizarre style of individual handwriting. Just another avenue for you to remember...
