    3. I have been unsucessful for a few years in tracing my gt grandmother, Augusta Hassenfeldt [Hasselfeldt]. From her tombstone in Ashford, Cattauragus County, New York, her birthdate is said to be Jan. 2, 1836 and she died Jan. 20, 1923. From US census records her birthplace is said to be Prussia. From the 1861 Canadian census, she is said to have been born in Prussia as was her husband, but his birthplace was actually Mecklenburg-Schwerin. In the 1871 Canadian census, both are said to have been born in Germany. An elderly cousin told me years ago that Augusta and her sister as young girls emigrated and, on the ship, the sister died. The censuses would indicate that the emigration was about 1854 and I have a copy of an Affidavit from 1909 indicating that she and her husband were married at Buffalo, New York on Dec. 26, 1855. But searches in the marriage register where her husband's brother was married have been unsuccessful. Searches of ships' records so far have not yielded any positive results. The only indication I have of her maiden surname is from the Ashford Roman Catholic Cemetery listing of her daughter's burial, in which her mother's maiden name is listed as Woscha. (The family I am tracing is Ev. Lutheran, but the daughter married into a R. C. family.) I think the surname could have been Wosche, with the pronunciation sounding to non-Germans as ending in an "a". Anyone have any ideas? Sandra Harris (geb. Hassenfeldt) Brantford, Ontario, Canada hassenfeldt@sympatico.ca
