Dear Mr. Ross -- My Patzer relatives came to the US in 1866 from Obodowo, Kreis Flatow, West Prussia. I found information about them, 1800-1866, in the Evangelical [Lutheran] Church records for the Kreis. If your relatives came from the Lipka that is southwest of Gdansk, northwest of Bydgoszcz [Bromberg], then it is the same Kreis Flatow. It was in West, not East, Prussia. The LDS microfilmed church records for that area in 1958 and they should be available through your local Family Center. The reels I used were #245454, 245455, 245460, -and others. Naturally they are difficult to search, because of the unclear writing, and often the poor quality of the microfilm, but I did find information even though I don't speak German. The originals are in the Evangelical Archives in Berlin, and I too planned to visit there a few years ago. But only licensed researchers are allowed to use these old materials. So I hired a researcher, which was not expensive, and she turned up more information. I would like more research done, but she is now too busy to continue, so I am looking for someone else. I don't think there are civil records for the area anymore but there may be someplace. I would also like to any records that might give information about the military service of JOHANN PATZER, who was a sergeant in the artillery from about 1790 to the Peace of Tilsit in 1807. But I have no idea of regiment or other information. He was in Obodowo after 1807. As for Leipzig, I have no information, but if you find that there are records there from Kreis Flatow, please let me know. If you decide to travel to Kreis Flatow, I can supply the name of a local guide. He speaks Polish, German & English, and also could help with local research. Happy hunting!
