    1. Re: [PRUSSIA-ROOTS] Mayence place name question and KREMPEL
    2. Bon in South Florida, You are right, Mayence/Mainz was never in Prussia. However, is there a possibility that the name might be "Mayen?" Mayen is west of Koblenz and was in Prussia. Is the name clearly written in the death record you mention or could it even be something else? I don't find any other places named Mayence in my old German town indexes. Mayen would have been in Kreis Mayen, in the Rhine Province of Prussia. Mayence/Mainz was in the Rheinhessen district, province of Hesse-Darmstadt and never part of Prussia. Interesting, though, is that Mainz was just across the Rhein river from Prussia (see Wiesbaden, etc.) in the 1800s. It might be helpful to know if the Family History Library's IGI indicates if the KREMPEL surname appeared in Kreis Mayen, Rhineland or in the Prussian area across from Mainz. It seems use of the word "Prussia" in the various census records you mentioned is significant. You didn't say if the couple was married in Germany, but do you know where Anna Mary originated? Might be a clue there.... Karen B. Whitmer ************************************** AOL now offers free email to everyone. Find out more about what's free from AOL at http://www.aol.com.

    3. Karen, Actually, in digging around, I did find an old map. At one point, Mainz was in Prussia, although barely. The timing was right. You're the second to mention Mayen (and I did see it on the map while searching.) So I may check that out as well. The IGI gave two Krempel marriages in Mainz, one well after mine left, one of a Francis KREMPEL who married in 1783. My Francis KREMPEL was born in 1810 so who knows, perhaps this other Francis was related. It gives me a starting place. The Mayence was quite clear on the certificate, so in this case, there was no problem reading it (as can be the case sometimes.) I don't know from where Anna Mary originated. I assume they married in Germany, but am not sure, as the first child was listed as being born in the U.S. (I don't have the exact place other than "Pennyslvania", so don't have the baptism.) Thanks for the suggestions. It's nice to have a place in which to look, after 25 years of just "Prussia".
