Hello. I'm new to the list and hoping someone might be able to help me. Someone on another list suggested I join this list and ask my questions. My ggrandfather, Heinrich Carl Meinzen, emigrated from Prussia/Hanover in 1866 and arrived in the U.S. in June of that same year. I have been unable to find him on a passenger list, though I have found a man named Ernst Meinzen who has the same age, occupation, and date of arrival. I don't know if they are the same man or not. Does anyone know whether individuals leaving Prussia needed paperwork or passports to leave the country during this time period? I've heard conflicting information. If there are emigration records, does anyone know where they can be found? I have more questions but will post them individually to make it easier for those who may respond.
