Hello, Listers - My name is Julia and I have GP, GGP, aunts, uncles who came from Germany and supposedly Prussia. I'll have questions to ask as I'm not very experienced in genealogy. (Only been at it about 3 months and so far, I'm merely an Internet searcher.) But right now, I want to point out that the LDS has roughly two kinds of records. 1. Source records that they've gone around the world to photograph. These are the same records we would be puzzling over if we could travel to Germany or wherever. 2. Member-submitted "genealogical research". It is a religious requirement that good Mormons research their ancesters and send in their findings to have the Church ordinances performed by proxy for their deceased relatives so that the families will all be baptized and "sealed" to each in heaven. Now, the various members have different views on this - some get really interested and do the best job they can while others want to get it over with. They ALL are amatuers (like me!). In addition, research was much more difficult before PCs and the Internet. My mother was a Mormon in the years before her death. She got really into it and wrote all over the place for information. Even though she did the best job she could without a WWW and PC, with failing eyesight and health, she submitted her findings to the Church for the ordinances to be done. However, the Church checks only to see if the historic persons in the Church member's genealogy already had the ordinances or not; THEY DO NOT CHECK THE ACCURACY OF THE SUBMITTED DATA. The LDS "IGI" records are taken from the member-submitted pedigrees and files. They are heavily weighted to familes of Mormon submitters which means it's also prone to errors with a heavy slant to the WASPy and little info about Jewish or Black ancestors. So don't get too upset if member-submitted pedigrees are inaccurate or even downright screwy. I know my mother's data had flaws, though I'm impressed with she did get right with such technological and health disadvantages. Take the member-submitted pedigrees and files with a grain of salt and use them as inspiration for other avenues to persue, but prove everything. These records are just too weak to use as citation material. Good luck! Julia " I found the following family listed from familysearch.org. 3540. Hello Julia, It was nice to see your post with the information on the types of LDS records. I hope others find it as interesting and useful as I. Good luck with your research. Thanks Julia, A timely reminder, and hopefully a warning to those who think all their research can be done (sometimes instantly) on the Internet! LDS Filming gives so many of us the chance to research records that would otherwise be inaccessible, but other secondary sources such as the IGI and transcriptions on other sites always need careful checking before they can be considered 'facts'. Good luck in your research - genealogy has become rather an obsession with me so perhaps you may like to heed that warning!! You seem to have a very good foundation for your work, so all the best for the future. Kind regards, Bronwyn Klimach.
