    3. Family Search is redoing all of it's information.  As you find incorrect information on the site, you have the right to dispute it.  I'm not sure exactly how it all works, but I believe workers at the LDS Family History centers know how to do it.  I understand that they will do away with Ancestral file, because there are so many errors and problems.  Kay North Salt Lake, UT --- On Tue, 4/14/09, Kathleen Deao <[email protected]> wrote: From: Kathleen Deao <[email protected]> Subject: Re: [PRUSSIA-ROOTS] Genealogy sites.... To: [email protected] Date: Tuesday, April 14, 2009, 8:28 AM Since you are collecting opinions - I have not added my files to the public sites, because I don't think they are good enough. A mistake in genealogy data makes the "facts" worthless. I, too, could list many crazy mistakes that I have seen for my immediate family. I have 12,000 names between my family and my husband's, and I don't want to be responsible for perpetuating erroneous information. When I began this hobby/obsession, I did not cite sources or document very well. Many of the names I have are "borrowed" from the public sites, for whose existence I *am* grateful. They are a starting point for me. I then do my own verification, and then add my own sources. Using the sites, but not contributing my tree, may seem hypocritical to some. One way I do contribute is by submitting corrections to RootsWeb and Ancestry.com files [both census corrections and family tree corrections], only when I am sure that I have my facts straight. It's unfortunate that there is not a system in place to correct data on the FamilySearch pages. I do use the message boards and lists, and prefer to work in a more controlled setting, sharing with a person or group where I can ask questions, share, correct my files, explain discrepancies, etc. I am more than happy to share my trees with close family, or cyber-families who I trust, because I know who has them, and I can send corrections and updates. Should they choose to publish this info . . . well, I guess that is out of my control. I have no copyrights, but would hope they credit me as a source.
