According to his obituary, Frederick was born on 10 January 1847 in "Bliithen, Prussia, the son of Joachim and Katherine Schulz. On 26 November 1881 he married his first cousin, Emeline Theodosia Schultz, who was born 8 April 1857 in Defiance County, Ohio, and was the daughter of Frederik and Elizabeth (nee Meier) Schulz.
