    3. Thank you, Guenter. I'm glad my question wasn't entirely stupid. My elusive great grandfather, Henrich Tigges b. about 1846, stated his origin as Prussia. The only passenger list and Castle Garden records I have found for a person who could have been he show Sachsen and Saxony, respectively. He lived for a time in New York City, evidently married there (no record that I've been able to find) and had one child, my grandmother. Soon after her birth in 1875, the entire family, including Henry's wife's parents and siblings, went to Portland, Oregon. After Henry's wife died, he brought his only child, my grandmother, back east and settled in Jersey City, NJ. He later remarried before dying in 1904. There are lots of baptismal entries at Family Search, but they all are southwest of Hanover -- none in east Germany. All that I know about him, including numerous "maybe's," is in my database www.doriswheeler.org.
