Hi Stefan - My 4x g.grandfather was Marquard Ludvig von Printzen and he was born in 1736 in Kobenhavn - his father was Friderich Wilhelm von Printzen and his mother was Susanna Elisabeth Clavel de Letang. He had an older brother called Heinrich Wilhelm who was born in 1734 - I found his name, along with that of Friedrich Wilhelm, in the Danish Naval History lists. My main problem is with Hjob/Hiob - I found his military records and he was in Boynenburgs regiment (I think that's what it says) in 1690. I am pretty sure that he is related to the same family as the other Marquard Ludvig Freiherr von Printzen - they both have the same famiy crest for one thing and the names seem to trickle down through the family - right down to my 2x g.grandfather who was also a Marquard Ludvig von Printzen. We still have the wax seal used by earlier generations of the family - an owl sitting on a branch. To be honest, I hadn't picked up on the death of a Marquard Ludvig buried in 1735 at Garnisons, so must look. I do know that Hjob was buried inside Garnisons church but I thought that was in 1740. I also feel that it must have been a rather substantial funeral as there was a large payment for the service - much higher than for any other individuals in church records around that time. On Hjob's Danish military records it says 'Pommersk og Brandenburgst Adellegt' or something like that - the writing is hard to read but someone told me that it means that he is from a noble family from Brandenburg. I really would like to establish his parenthood if at all possible. Thanks for taking an interest. Hi - I am trying to find birth records for my 6x g.grandfather who was said to have come from Markbrandenburg. His name was Hiob/Hjob or Job von Printz or von Printzen and he was said to have been born in 1677. He died in Denmark in 1740 at the age of 63 years and he is buried at Garnison Church, Kobenhavn. His earlier military records show that in 1707 he received a permit to travel for four months to his home in Markbrandenburg - his coat of arms is an owl. Any help would be much appreciated - Melva

I have to echo Brigitte's advice here. My GGGF married in Posilge, West Prussia (now Zulawka Sztumska, Poland ) in 1853 at the age of 32 to a woman who was 24. As far as I know, this was the first marriage for both of them. As far as Prussian military service is concerned, a young man who was drafted generally completed three years of service (two years after 1893) sometime after his finishing school at around the age of 14. After his formal schooling was completed, he would start an apprenticeship or go into paid employment in agriculture, trade, or industry. As best as I can determine, the years of military service generally encompassed the years between the ages of 20 to 23, although this certainly varied by individual. However, it is a myth that all men were called for military service. Depending on the area, there were usually far more young men available than there were need for them in the military. Since Prussian regiments were authorized only to draft as many young men as they had slots for, many young men did not serve time in the military. But Ignacy possibly had to wait until he was of age. Up to 1876 in Prussia you were of age when you had 25 years. After being of age he did not need a marraige permit from his parents any longer. Brigitte.
Brigitte, I did not know about 25 being the "age of consent" for marriage in Prussia. Thanks for sharing that information! Ignacy turned 25 in December 1872 and married in January 1873. He didn't waste any time! I know when Ignacy was born, but not where, beyond Russia (perhaps Rypin/Plock). His place of residence at the time he wed in 1873 was Sokoligora (Keise Briesen, Marienwerder). I do not know how long he had been living in Prussia and therefore whether he had to serve compulsory military duty. If he did, and I can find a record, I may learn his birthplace. Does anyone know how to determine if there are records for this area in the late 1860/early 1870? If so, what organization holds the records and how would I contact them? Thanks! Hi Betsy, at this time (about 1850) Brandenburg as whole Germany was agricultural, there didn't exist minings. Since you have Anhalt-Bernburg as birthplace you should look through the (Protestant) church books of the town of Bernburg which are microfilmed by the LDS church: http://www.familysearch.org/eng/library/fhlcatalog/supermainframeset.asp?display=topicdetails&subject=372185&subject_disp=Germany%2C+Anhalt%2C+Bernburg+%2D+Church+records&columns=*,0,0 But it's possible that you will find nothing since your ancestors might be born not directly in the town of Bernberg but in a village which belonged to the Duchy of Anhalt-Bernburg. I don't think that Brandenburg will be the clue since it's too far away from Bernburg. By the way the German pronunciation of Bernburg is very similar to the pronunciation of Bran(den)burg. Thanks for the help. One of the brothers was a miner, the other a tailor. I understand the Brandenburg province had mining while the Duchy of Anhalt-Bernburg was primarily agricultural. The brothers could have originated in one and worked in or relocated to the other. Where would genealogical records of the 1850s be held if they still exist?
Hi Betsy! Anhalt was a duchy from 1863 to 1918: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anhalt in 1855 when the Pistorius brothers emigrated to the US it was a duchy of the German Confederation called Anhalt-Bernburg, ruled by the House of Ascania with its residence at Bernburg in present-day Saxony-Anhalt: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anhalt-Bernburg Brandenburg in 1855: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Province_of_Brandenburg > Can anyone work out what city they came from with this information? Sorry, no city either in Anhalt-Bernburg, Brandenburg, Prussia or Germany, maybe the brothers were born somewhere in the Province of Brandenburg (was a province of the Kingdom of Prussia) and went to and lived in the neighboring Duchy of Anhalt-Bernburg (not belonging to Prussia) before they emigrated. Biskirchen is now a part of the little town of Leun in the Lahn-Dill-Kreis which was partially a part (exclave) of the Rhine Province in Prussia in the 1850s http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Leun http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rhine_Province HAPPY NEW YEAR !!
Hi Betsey, Anhalt was an independent German state. If you see on this map in Wikipedia you will see this duchy (and also the city of Bernburg): http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anhalt. It was a small duchy and since noboy in the new world knew it your ancestors might given their birthplaces as "Brandenburg", "Prussia" or "Germany" but these places were wrong. Biskirchen is in Hesse: http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Biskirchen I'm not sure if Biskirchen belonged to Prussia or not. My subject should have been : Prussian/German historical geography Please add it. Thanks, Betsey Cotter
I need geography help. My second great grandfather Andreas Augustus (August) Pistorius and his brother Augustus Andreas (Andrew) Pistorius emigrated to the US in 1855. The 2 Pistorius brothers arrived at the Port of New York aboard the Union, having departed Breman, Germany. They were from Anhalt-Bernburg and destined for 'Newhaven' (Connecticut). Andrew (1827-1887) was a miner and is accompanied by his wife Amelia Boenecke (1828-1913) and son Fritz (1852-?). August (1829-1903) was tailor. In 1860, they list their origin as Prussia and in 1870, as Germany. Their granddaughter states they were born in Brandenburg. I believe there is currently both a Brandenburg town and a Brandenburg (German) state. Anhalt-Bernburg (Prussia) is now part of Saxony-Anhalt (a German state). My question: is current day Brandenburg (town) in what used to be Anhalt-Bernburg? Can anyone work out what city they came from with this information? Another clue: August married Catherine Fischer (1824-1863) from Biskirchen. I think they must have know each other in Prussia although they married in the US.
