    2. Sandra Harris
    3. I have been unsucessful for a few years in tracing my gt grandmother, Augusta Hassenfeldt [Hasselfeldt]. From her tombstone in Ashford, Cattauragus County, New York, her birthdate is said to be Jan. 2, 1836 and she died Jan. 20, 1923. From US census records her birthplace is said to be Prussia. From the 1861 Canadian census, she is said to have been born in Prussia as was her husband, but his birthplace was actually Mecklenburg-Schwerin. In the 1871 Canadian census, both are said to have been born in Germany. An elderly cousin told me years ago that Augusta and her sister as young girls emigrated and, on the ship, the sister died. The censuses would indicate that the emigration was about 1854 and I have a copy of an Affidavit from 1909 indicating that she and her husband were married at Buffalo, New York on Dec. 26, 1855. But searches in the marriage register where her husband's brother was married have been unsuccessful. Searches of ships' records so far have not yielded any positive results. The only indication I have of her maiden surname is from the Ashford Roman Catholic Cemetery listing of her daughter's burial, in which her mother's maiden name is listed as Woscha. (The family I am tracing is Ev. Lutheran, but the daughter married into a R. C. family.) I think the surname could have been Wosche, with the pronunciation sounding to non-Germans as ending in an "a". Anyone have any ideas? Sandra Harris (geb. Hassenfeldt) Brantford, Ontario, Canada hassenfeldt@sympatico.ca

    1. Re: [PRUSSIA-ROOTS] Location of Altona, Prussia
    2. (It helps to put a precise place in the subject line) According to Meyers-Orts (the 1912 gazetteer - THE place to look for genealogists, printed in German fraktur, but you can figure it out with practice) there are 13 places called Altona, most of them miniscule. You MAY be talking about the village outside Hamburg, now a suburb. In 1826 a city directory shows: (with occupation, street address, separate index) Hinrichs, Claus Hinr., Collecteur, Gewürz, Palmsitte (? blurry) N.S. no.51 Hinrichs, Hein Ww. Fenwaarenhandt, Sestermaunstr. no 218 Hinrichs. Pet. Arbeitsm. Neueburg no 61 K. and lots of Hinrichsen and Hinsch entries. In the City of Hamburg itself, 1826: Hinrichs, Carl Adolph, Porcellan u. Steinzeng, Paulsstr. no 152 P.5. Laden in der isten Braudtstw. no 17 Hinrichs, C. F. Kunsthandl. Bleichenbrücke, Wohnung daselbst. no 361 Hinrichs, Eduard Phil., Dr.Ph. Schmiedestr. no 86 Hinrichs, Gerhd. Christo. Böhmkenstr. no 210 Hinrichs, Joach. Schiffszimmerm. Langerereihe b. d. Vorsetzen no 122 M. 11 Hinrichs. Joh. Carl, Goldl-und Silber-Tressen-Fabrik, B. Cto.Schmiedestr. no 69 P. Hinrichs, Joh. Nic. Böhmkenstr. no 209 Hinrichs, Joh. Peter, Patent-Pianoforte-Fabrik, Caffamacherreihe no 174 and lots more Hinrichsen, Hinsch. According to his WW1 draft record he was born August 29. 1894. I am not sure when he immigrated to the US. But he filed his first papers in 1917. I am trying to find info on his family. 3. Hi Ruth, Thank you very much for researching Johannes for me. It was so kind of you to do so. :) Unfortunately, I already have that information. In fact, some of it was my own. LOL Johannes was listed in the 1930 census, but "disappeared" either shortly before that census or immediately after it. I'm trying to track him down now......find out where he went. Plus, locate information on his family in Germany. He's a slick customer, though! :) Thanks again, Ruth! -Kat-

Lena and their 3 children, Charles, Edward, and Walter were living with him, as well as Lena's father, Carl Weichel, and her 2 brothers and 2 sisters, Carl Jr., Elizabeth, Katherine, and Herman. ---------- I did find John in the 1930 census. He was still with his wife and children and Lena's father and her married sister. 1930 US Census Kingston, Plymouth County, Massachusetts Carl Weikel, head, age 66, widow, maried age 23, born abt 1864 Germany, parents born Germany, emigrated 1883, alien Lena Richter, daughter, age 39, married age 20, born abt 1891 Massachusetts, parents born Germany John H Richter, Son-in-law, age 46, married age 27, born abt 1884 Germany, parents born Germany, emigrated 1900, alien, occupation: rope factory Charls O Richter, Grandson, age 19, born abt 1911 Massachusetts, father born Germany Edward J Richter, Grandson, age 17, born abt 1913 Massachusetts, father born Germany, mother born Massachusetts, Occupation: Dresser?, woolen mak? Have you tried to find a marriage record for them in Plymouth County? The marriage record should list John and Lena's parents. http://awt.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=3-cats&id=I15420 ID: I15420 Name: John Henry Martin Richter Sex: M Birth: 1885 in Germany Father: Ernst Richter Mother: Marie Peerree Marriage 1 Lena Weichel b: 16 JUN 1890 in Chelsea, Suffolk County, Massachusetts Married: 27 AUG 1910 in Massachusetts ----------- Also, have you tried to look for John Richter in the city directories for Plymouth County after 1930? 3. Searching for any information on Johannes Heinrich Martin Richter (or any name variation thereof), born Sept. 24, 1884 in either Germany or South Africa. Johannes/John immigrated to the US abt. 1900. In 1910 he married my grandmother, Lena Weichel, in Plymouth, Ma. By 1929 he had disappeared, never to be heard from again. Supposedly, John's parents names were Ernst E.E. Richter and Marie Perrie (Germany). He had a sister, Johanna Schonherr, who was still living in Germany in 1952. His two other siblings ( 1 brother, 1 sister) were deceased. Apparently, they were living in the Leipzig, Germany/Erzgebirge Mountain area. John was missing two fingers on his left hand as a result of an accident at the Plymouth Cordage Company where he worked before 1929. It is suspected he changed his name when he "disappeared", but the missing fingers would be an identifying mark. If anyone has any information on either John or his family in Germany, I would greatly appreciate it. -Kat-
