Annette, Only two rolls of National Archives microfilm for ship arrivals in October of 1858. Either check out one and then the other, or order both to cover the whole month. You would look for: SERIES M-237 (arrivals at New York 1820-1897)) Roll 187 - August 28, 1858 through October 2, 1858 Roll 188 - October 3, 1858 through November 9, 1858 It usually doesn't take long to look through a roll of film, as some ships arrived from non-European ports (Carribean, etc.) and probably can be skipped over. Keep in mind that October might not be the actual date of arrival, but it certainly is a good place to begin a search. If you order film through the Family History Library, their film numbers are different from those of the National Archives, but the port and arrivals are all the same and can be easily identified in the FHL catalog. Thanks for the effort, Jane. But, Frank L. Rosentreter was born 2/28/1839, not his father, August R. Rosentreter. Frank is the son of August R. and Henrietta (Schultz) Rosentreter who were natives of Prussia. A listing for Aug Zastrow with a birth date of 1837 would have made him only two when his son, Frank was born. Upon researching my data, I discovered that I have Frank L. Rosentreter coming alone to America in 1858, landing in NY in October of that year. Still uncertain of the ship that he arrived on or where it departed. Anyone know of any ships arriving from the Prussia area to New York in 1858?? Annette I found an Aug Rosentreter on ancestry.com. He was born approx. 1837; arrival date in U1 Aug, 1867, port of arrival New York, Left Bremen on the ship F Reck. There were a fw other Aug/Augusts listed for other ports of arrival, but this was the only one where the birthdate seemed reasonable. Jane Brown Fredericksburg, TX
I've been relatively quiet during this discussion because on the whole it's been polite, dignified and informative. This however crosses the line. There is no need to post anything that is anti any one religion. I'm Roman Catholic and I find this very offensive. If you can't say something nice, then don't say anything. There are rotten priests/ministers/rabbis in every religion, that doesn't make the religion evil. This discussion was started as an explanation of the terms Evangelische, Lutheran, and Protestant. It did not start in order to criticize one religion over another. Please take your hatred elsewhere. And let this be the end of this discussion. It just proves you can't discuss religion or politics without it turning nasty. Oh, sorry -- I misunderstood which one you were talking about. I didn't see any Frank/Franz/other possible on the ancestry list. Did you try the Immigrant Ships' Transcribers database? Jane
Amen. As well, it is extremely common for people to take what one priest, minister, rabbi says and take it as the "gospel truth." Only when people misunderstand the whole picture and think the world is always black and white do comments such as these come up. I also note that it is generally non-Catholics bashing the Catholic faith by using the same worn out things that we have all heard until we are blue in the face. Some people want to look up information not to learn the truth but to find something that sounds intelligent enough to further their side of the Catholic bashing. As Catholics, we generally spend no time whatsoever trying to find reasons to criticize non-Catholics. The only way I have found to end a situation such as this is to just refuse to engage in it. Someone who is convinced of their position against the Catholic Church won't see the truth because they don't want to. Trying to argue it only gives fuel to the fire for those who want to remain hateful. I'm the person who originally POSTED the innocent question on whether or not anyone knew was Evangelish meant. It started this whole mess. I got the correct and nice answer from the woman who got it out of Wikipedia, copied and inserted it. Thank you. The rest of all the posts have made me ashamed for the rest of you. You made me wish I'd never asked such an innocent question.

Chuck and Grace: To quote Horst A. Reschke in his booklet "German Military Records as Genealogical Sources": "The entire inventory of records for the Prussian army was housed in the Heeresarchiv at Potsdam. In 1945, during the battle of Berlin and environs, these records were almost completely destroyed by fire. A few records survived the war by being stored for safekeeping in locations less affected by bombing and combat." Mr. Reschke does not cite where these few surviving records can be located except for the military church records and which, I believe, are available on LDS film. There may also "Ranglisten" films which concern only officers. Cheryl: Are you looking for imaged or transcribed records? If so you will not find much. The Germans have strict privacy laws and do not allow a lot of the dissemination of records that we enjoy here in the US. Are you looking for records for a particular parish? If so, you may find they have been microfilmed by the LDS church and can be obtained on a rental basis through one of their Family History Centers. Can you be a little more specific in what you are looking for? Sheila K.
How interesting is the Internet. I was enjoying a lively discussion and learning much that pertains to the work I am doing on my family history. I understand that my perspective is different from others, but still. I love learning this kind of information. It helps so much in my research. Hello Herb - I happened upon a version of your name (serendipity enters into genealogy VERY often, while I was looking for someone else) on Proquest, on a very brief free trial site, no longer available to me. Teschke is pronounced the same way as Teske (German sound if north, perhaps a little softer in the south, Hochdeutsch, not American sound). You might find Proquest available to you at your public library or genealogical society library. Teschke - Chicago Daily Tribune 25 March 1955 Margaret Teschke, nee DOWD, beloved wife of John E., dear mother of Martin, Johnny, Frank, and Christine Nielsen, eight grandchildren. I have been an observer of this list for a couple months now. I am amazed with all of the help that people are receiving from so many kind souls of this group. Hope that your help might extend to this newbie, too. I am looking for a passenger list for my great great grandfather, August R ROSENTRETER and his son, Frank. These are all of the facts that I presently have: August R. ROSENTRETER and his wife Henrietta (Schultz) ROSENTRETER were natives of Prussia. Their son Frank L. ROSENTRETER was born in Germany (unsure of exact location). I have his birth listed as 2/28/1839 and his death in Rochester, NY as 1902. He married in June of 1867 to Mary SCHERFF and settled first in Des Moines, Iowa and then in Peoria, IL. Since both of their deaths are listed as being in Rochester, NY, I would assume that they eventually lived there, also. I have found Frank listed in the 1900 Federal Census in Rochester. I have tried searching passenger lists at Ellis Island and Castle Garden, but have not located him. Any help finding him would be greatfully appreciated. Annette in Ocala, FL
