Recently learned there is a village in Kreis Cammin named Dünow. We would like to learn as much as we can about any of these families or villages. Thank you in advance for any help you can give. 3. Thank you, Guenter. I'm glad my question wasn't entirely stupid. My elusive great grandfather, Henrich Tigges b. about 1846, stated his origin as Prussia. The only passenger list and Castle Garden records I have found for a person who could have been he show Sachsen and Saxony, respectively. He lived for a time in New York City, evidently married there (no record that I've been able to find) and had one child, my grandmother. Soon after her birth in 1875, the entire family, including Henry's wife's parents and siblings, went to Portland, Oregon. After Henry's wife died, he brought his only child, my grandmother, back east and settled in Jersey City, NJ. He later remarried before dying in 1904. There are lots of baptismal entries at Family Search, but they all are southwest of Hanover -- none in east Germany. All that I know about him, including numerous "maybe's," is in my database www.doriswheeler.org. 2. Lauren Gilles
    3. Dear List: I'd appreciate some assistance uncovering a mystery regarding my great-grandmother LOUISE STELZNER.    LOUISE recalled spending a good deal of time in a place called Winkelsdorf in Prussia. My father thought this was their summer home or it might have been where her grandfather, "the duke" lived. Later family records show that LOUISE married, had 2 daughters, was widowed, married again and had 2 more daughters. I know that daughters # 3 & 4 were born in Deutsch Eylau in Prussia.    So far, I've searched under all of the family names at LDS and every other genealogy site I know of. Nothing comes up for LOUISE other than a few Ancestry.com census entries and a trip she made back from Germany in 1907. I've found nothing on her parentage or birthplace and nothing on her first or second husband.   Here's what I know - or think I know: LOUISE STELZNER was born 1841 in Prussia. Father was possibly CHRISTIAN STELZNER. Mother was possibly MARIE ARLOV, ORLOV, ORLOFF, ORLOPP, AURLAUF? I am hoping that she wasn't confusing the name with Eylau, which sounds similar. Mother was Herzoglich, or the daughter of a duke in or near Winkelsdorf. LOUISE married Mr. GALL and had LAURA GALL and JOHANNA GALL (b.1870) Mr. GALL died. LOUISE married Mr. HUSAR and had EMMA HUSAR and LISETTE HUSAR (in 1886) in Deutsch Eylau. The HUSARS came to America around 1893. I haven't found the family's passage to America. LOUISE HUSAR lived in Milwaukee all her life and died in 1927 at the age of 86.   I apologize if I'm being too wordy. Any help or advice finding the duke or Louise's parentage would be truly appreciated! Thanks so much. Lauren

    1. Re: [PRUSSIA-ROOTS] Saxony
    2. Doris The answer to your question of wether Sachsen was part of Prussia in the 1860's is both yes and no. Let me explain: The Kingdom of Sachsen, which was the was the part closest to the border to Boehmen was not part of Prussia. The Provinz Sachsen to the north-west of the Kingdom was part of Prussia. The Herzogtum of Sachsen-Anhalt was not part but was associated with Prussia. For the Kingdom of Sachsen this was true from about 1815 to 1918, after which the German Reich was formed and all came under Prussia. Sachsen Anhalt sort of was in and out at different times, but was mostly associated with prussia during the approximately 100 years Source: Historischer Atlas Deutschland 1997 Hope this helps.
