Thanks Maureen, I am German so I kept looking at the name and came up with Osterwein. Genealogy is always a puzzle, but that's what it so much fun about it. Have a great weekend! I will email you a sheet from the ship's Manifest. Yes, my great grandfather was listed as John Ferk at CastleGarden.org. You're welcome! I looked some more - those other 3 villages are all near Minden. Dissen is in Osnabrueck, am Teutoburger Wald. Now Osnabrueck and Hannover are all included in Niedersachsen. The postal code for this Dissen is 49201. It is a good-sized place according to the 2004 German auto club atlas in 1910 the population was 2,000. So - Dissen #1 in Meyers is in Brandenburg, Dissen #2 is in Hannover Standesamt and ev. Pft.), Dissen #3 is in Hessen-Nassau. There is a small Minden in what was then called the Rheinland - a very large Minden in what was then Westfalen. Now Nord-Rhein-Westfalen. All those date to 1912. Hi Phil, I always start with www.familysearch.org and I would the surnames in search engine. For Kruger, I would also try Krueger. Fleishfreser I would put in Fleischfresser. Muller or Mueller is a very common surname. Hopefully you have specific names and dates for that name. Hartfiel might have been Hartfeil? Give that a try and see if you can up come with anything. Dear Heidi, It's great to see someone on this list with family from where my own family came from! First, the correct Polish name is Wegorzewo, and the first e has a little hook on it which makes the vowel nasalized, so it sounds like "Ven-go-ZHE-voh." Lovely location, on the north end of one of the prettiest of the Masurian Lakes. Unfortunately, the Russians shelled the daylights out of it in 1945 and most of the buildings are newer, in the cement-slab style of the Workers' Paradise. The parish church was only partially destroyed, has been rebuilt, and still has an organ built in the mid-1600s. Some of the public records were stored in the castle, which was bombed to shreds and those records lost. Others survive. There's a society in Germany of people who (or whose families) came from East Prussia and they are slowly publishing whatever records they can find. I don't have time to look it up right now, but will do so ASAP. Or just Google for Angerburg. Angerburg was the "county town" and a lot of people "from" there actually were from one of the villages scattered around. So you -may- have quite a bit of searching to do. I have heard that the Russians have the records and won't give them up, and/or that all records were destroyed. Family Search shows a number of films available under East Prussia, but the labels don't match place names that I have.
