I was recently told of a program called Tolken99. It is available online for $30. The person who designed it lives in Sweden. Tolken translates Norwegian, French, German, Spanish, Swedish and Danish. Log into "Google", When the home page comes up, do not type anything in space but look to the right, there you will see 3 subjects, the last one being "language tools". Click on this, it will bring you to a page where you can type in a sentence or scroll down and you can put an entire web page in. A pull down menu asks for ....what language to what language. Babelfish may work okay for a few words but in my experience it doesn't do a good job for a paragraph of information. In the past I have contacted foreign exchange students at the high school and have had good success with them. They are the ones that look over the babelfish and find that it has many errors. Arnold You can copy the pages of the films , and have someone to translate the copy. The LDS library that I go to has some translators that They will ask to translate, when the is a copy. Karl, Visited the LDS library several years ago. Found records for Battrow, but since they were written in the old German script, it may as well have been in Araabic or an Oriental script. Mona, You might want to take another look at the census record where "Ryanbroth" appears, just to see if you can come up with a different spelling. If you cannot find Ryanbroth in town indexes, it may actually be something else. The ending of this word is a bit suspect ("broth") and more than likely the name ended with "roth" or "rath." Also see if you can make out a different beginning for this name, as the "Ryan" may not be quite right either. While Ryanbroth sounds like a perfectly logical name, it might not be a logical German name. Perhaps it will be worth your time to recheck the census to see if you can come up with a different spelling for this town. I checked the Alsace-Lorraine old town index and did not find a town with a similar spelling. In 1871, Alsace was not part of Prussia, however, so that might help your search through process of elimination. Perhaps they went through Alsace when they emigrated? Certainly Hontheim and Coblenz were in the Rhineland, in Prussia, so it might mean you can find the other place of origin there as well, leaving only Alsace as the place that "doesn't fit" with the rest. Married: Anna Maria Christina Hansen (from Denmark) on July 5, 1879 in Grabow on the Oder, Stettin. Died: Egg Harbor City, NJ: 1924. He entered military service on Dec. 12, 1874, assigned to the 5th Company, a part of Furty ORT Royt #2 (translation a little unclear). Honorably discharged to the Army Reserve on Oct. 1, 1877. Came to U.S. from Stettin in 1881, arriving New York on the SS Katie. Went to Philadelphia with a friend August Krumbenner. It is believed that he had at least one sister, Augusta, who married Fred Keplinger (probably in Philadelphia area) and possible one brother who was referred to as "Uncle Gus"....living in Kansas. Grandmom arrived from Stettin with firstborn son Carl Johann in July of 1881 also on board the SS Katie. His father was Johann Grams His mother: Wilhelmine Rosenow (Rosenau) Nothing is know of them. Arnold, Not to get into a WWII discussion here, but... Don't assume the Russians destroyed everything. #1 years of Allied bombing destroyed a lot of things, including wiping out many cities. #2 the Germany army had orders to burn everything as they pulled back, from Russia to the German border #3 the Russian army destroyed what they had to, to keep pushing the German forces back, and there wasn't that much left for them to destroy.
